In 2015 there were videos of the Delhi policemen beating up women students because they chanted anti modi slogans and not one FIR was filed. Not much has happened on the JNU cases and bjp men beating up kanhaiya kumar inside the Delhi high court under police custody.
An AAP municipal councellor was beaten up during a council meeting under media cameras and an FIR hasn't been filed so far despite the victim being a public representative.
I can only hope something happens this time.

I have a few friends who work and have further friends involved in DU politics.
Take this with a grain of salt but they are stating that there was a voter fraud done by ABVP, also how some ABVP worker was caught carrying bags into the counting centre on camera.
I can't really trust how valid these claims were as they came from the opposition.

Video of ABVP member Diksha Verma assaulting AISA President Sucheta De goes viral, she'd earlier alleged molestation
  • One of the defining pictures of the fracas at Ramjas College, Delhi, where ABVP members assaulted students of AISA, SFI and other student unions was that of an ABVP activist Diksha Verma who was clicked swinging her hand at another student.
  • The image went viral and she later alleged that she went on the offensive as she was being molested.
  • However, now a video of Diksha Verma punching AISA National President Sucheta De in her face without any apparent provocation has gone viral on social media.
  • In the above video, Diksha Verma can be seen walking towards Sucheta De and swinging a punch at her and then walking away as Sucheta De reacts with surprise and pain.
  • This unprovoked attack captured on video have put her earlier allegations in a shadow of doubt.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) (translation: All Indian Student Council) is a Hindu nationalist all India student organisation affiliated to the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It is one of the largest student organizations with more than 3 million members.

Meanwhile here is a video immediately before things turned violent that day. Notice how AISA/SFI are on one side and ABVP on the other with Police acting preventing the two from clashing. Now watch around timestamp 15sec how the AISA/SFI guy pulls in an ABVP guy (blue pullover with 33 written on back) and then pounce on him thrashing him. It is then that it becomes a free for all.
So no, my dear comrade, as much as you guys might want to prove that ABVP started the violence while AISA/SFI people calmly got beaten, it was AISA/SFI who started the violence by thrashing an ABVP guy.

Misplaced sarcasm doesn't help anyone. If you bother going through my comment history, I have no qualms in accepting that ABVP often indulges in violence. Only that I am baffled by left's assertion of them being victims of violence. The way a clash between SFI/AISA and ABVP has been spun into 'ABVP attacks Ramjas students' not just shows a total lack of understanding of DU politics but is also mischievous.

I don't think it's a good idea to encourage separatist violence in Kashmir, and sympathizing with terrorists is a really bad idea in general; violence rarely achieves anything in an asymmetric conflict.
However - if someone non-violently advocates for the freedom of Kashmir, is it a good idea to clamp down on that ? It looks horrible from an outsider PoV. And it's a human rights violation; something quite a few Indians don't particularly care about (unless it's the rights of hindutvavadis of course).
And yet the BJP is allied with them. If the BJP wants to be consistent, shouldn't it oppose this too and abandon the alliance ?

The demand for freedom for Kashmir is almost about using non-violent means. Kashmir ki azadi means just one thing: overpower the indian army through force and establish a sovereign Islamic state. And that is assuming they won't simply go and join Pakistan.
No sane state would allow something like that to happen.

Even the constitution doesn't give you absolute no-holds-barred rights. They are subject to reasonable restrictions. Speech inciting violence is criminalised in India, like it or not.

It's not a good idea to sympathize with terrorists, but how you handle that is what differentiates a matured democracy from an authoritarian shithole and everything in between.
Typically most western countries put people who do this on surveillance, but that's about it. If you start to jail people for thought crimes and what they say you open yourself to being a country that doesn't care too much about human rights.
The problem in India is that this goes far beyond laws - not just political parties but society itself values the emotions and pride (or honor) of a community over an individual. This is partly what makes India a backwards nation.
The demand for freedom for Kashmir is almost about using non-violent means.
This is simply not true. There are lots of Kashmiri Muslims who either want greater autonomy or freedom without any terrorism. India has been unable to engage moderates in Kashmir, and the BJP has tried to throttle the very reasonable farooq and Omar abdullah side of Kashmiri politics just to win elections.
Speech inciting violence is criminalised in India, like it or not.
Yes, India as a society probably isn't ready for total free speech. But this mentality gets misused - as seen with JNU, and with the likes of Mamata Banerjee.
I hope you realise these sedition laws were instituted by the British to try and muzzle Indian freedom fighters:

No, referendums for independence and mostly non violent freedom movements achieved through compromise are extremely common.
Was Kanhaia and Umar Khalid advocating or inciting violence ? Simply sympathising with separatism doesn't necessarily count as actionable sedition. What Burhan Wahni did is - so there is an important distinction here.
The BJP narrative is to club everyone that is opposed to their stance on Kashmir anti national; unless of course they belong to the PDP.
