During today’s broadcast of CNN’s State of the Union, host Jake Tapper explained to his audience that they attempted to get someone from the White House to appear on the program to discuss investigations into potential ties between President Donald Trump and Russia, but were rebuffed.
After playing a clip of Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) saying that a special prosecutor would be needed to look into these issues due to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ role with the Trump campaign, Tapper pointed out they reached out to the administration.
“We asked the White House to discuss this with us,” Tapper noted. “But the White House declined our offer.”
The CNN anchor would then go on to introduce Trump supporter and one-time adviser Chris Christie to the program, who would claim that a special prosecutor was not needed.
Earlier this month, CNN stated that State of the Union refused to allow White House counselor Kellyanne Conway onto the program as a guest due to concerns about her credibility. Elsewhere on the Sunday show landscape, Meet the Press’s Chuck Todd explained that he declined an offer from the White House to send a deputy press secretary to the program rather than a senior administration official.
