Greetings,
Two engineers from India - Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32; Alok Madasani, 32, of Overland Park, were shot at in a bar in Olate, Kansas.
Srinivas died of his injuries while Alok survived and is recovering. 24-year-old Ian Grillot of Grandview was also shot while trying to defend the victims. We are deeply saddened by the damage to all the lives and families caused by the shooter's actions.
Please consider donating to the gofundme pages of the victims.
We are grateful to the Govt. of India (Ms. Sushma Swaraj) for offering their support to the family.
We would like to extend special gratitude to Ian Grillot for his selfless and heroic actions that possibly saved other lives in the bar. People like Ian are the silver lining during such dark times and we wish him and Alok a speedy recovery.
Thank you for remembering that an attack like this serves only to remind us that we're one global community that looks out for each other and events like these, rare as they are, will not make us give in to hate and intolerance.

I am a white American with zero connection to India. I hope you don't mind me intruding on your sub but I just wanted to say my heart is breaking over this. Obviously any time innocent people are killed is tragic, but this incident just feels extra horrible somehow. I have had the opportunity to interact with many Indians (immigrants and American born alike) in all walks of life over the years and they are unfailingly among the hardest working and most decent people we have here. The Indian/South Asian community is a huge asset to the USA, and we'd be a much poorer place without them. It's awful that a minority of people here are so consumed by hatred that they can't see that.

As a former KC resident, who was employed by an amazingly sweet Indian couple, I'm crying right now. It seems so... I don't even have words.

As an Indian, it's nice to see that people like you exist. But I hope that one day, all people are judged by their ability, rather than race, not only in America but also India.

Thanks for your support.
For all desis, Exercise precaution at all times / avoid Kansas, Missouri, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Wyoming, Arkansas, New Mexico, Georgia and West Virginia. These are the worst states of America. If you are considering moving to one of these states to study or work, don't move in these volatile times.
[-]epenthesis 8 points
American-born Indian here... this is a really weird comment.
Wyoming is not particularly known for its racial tension. And New Mexico is one of the most pluralistic non-coastal states in America.
America as a whole is still a very safe place; events like this are incredibly isolated. It is, however, true that things are a little more worrying than they used to be. But a more accurate guideline for those who may be worried is to stick to large, educated metropolitan areas. Atlanta is better than rural California. Santa Fe is better than downstate Illinois.
[-]w30- 3 points (1 children)
What's wrong with New Mexico? Wyoming barely has any people to begin with.
Georgia still has the Atlanta metropolitan area, but otherwise yeah, I'd avoid Georgia too.
[-]USpolitics2017 3 points (1 children)
Georgia without Atlanta is basically Alabama
[-]w30- 2 points
Yeah but what about New Mexico? What's so bad about it racially speaking?
And every state without its metropolitan areas and small university/corporate towns is basically Alabama. That's America in a nutshell.
[-]kulcha_ek_khoj -1 points
To Americans, 100s to 1000s of American girls and women were either raped, killed, murdered, missing etc. That you will never know of. India is still tops the list as a Rapist Country.Think again before moving to any parts of India. If Those listed states in America is worst, triple the worse with toxic air, garbage and diseases.
[-]phone_throw12 4 points (1 children)
I so wish that upper caste in India have a fraction of empathy and heart for dalits-adivasis as you have for Indians there
For example : A 15 year old adivasi girl was gang raped , killed and branded as a Maoist by police few weeks back in Chhattisgarh and whole village was brutely beaten no sticky threads and discussion for those ? . Also i didn't find any sticky thread for Una ( dalit beatings) or Akhlaq (muslim murder) ?

No worries man. We are used to hate crimes. They are way too frequent here. Just a while ago a person of minority religion was killed for allegedly eating beef and one of the killers was hailed as a martyr by the ruling party.
[-]astronaut24 1 points
I think this is a horrible thing and paints a bad picture over Kansas city. I really can't believe this happened and I hope it never happens again. This is an unacceptable event it is and should be regarded as a hate crime.

I'm from KCMO and I don't doubt that many of us here would have behaved like Mr. Grilliot. He is the norm. The shooter is the outlier.
[-]RustyEdsel 20 points
This. I live not even two blocks from where the shooting occurred and can attest that many of us in Olathe would have done the same. Unfortunately this is a rare incidence of unnecessary violence that does not represent the community we are trying to uphold.

Sorry about that, we'll roll out the red carpet and issue free hugs next time people invade, rape, colonize and enslave us.
Hell, if all countries started doing that it would make America's foreign policy run much smoother.

Well at least the lovely Brits upended a disgusting society that treats women like objects (cover up or expect rape), treats poor people like garbage (caste), and modernized village people into civilized people with toilets. (many rural Indians don't have toilets. Still) Really the shithole needed to be colonized.
[-]TheLastOfADyingBreed 1 points - [removed] (1 children)
> Well at least the lovely Brits upended a disgusting society that treats women like objects
That's centuries of islamization for you, islam and muslims sub is that way ->. Must be hard criticizing your team mascot for the first time.
> (cover up or expect rape),
There is more rape in the US than there is in India.
> treats poor people like garbage (caste),
Everyone does - is still doing - that, we were just honest about it. Kind of like how we're both shit people, but I'm the only one honest about it.
> modernized village people into civilized people with toilets.
Brits actually never bothered with sanitation, they just built railroads to rob us faster, which is why the problem exists today.
> Really the shithole needed to be colonized to drag it into the future.
The shithole only became a shithole because of you people. It was one of, if not the richest country in the world with a GDP of 25%, which is why you came and colonized us for 300 years in the first place lmao.
The entire industrialisation of the West was entirely made possible because of the de-industrialisation of South Asia. You should be kissing my ass, I just got done squatting over a pothole and need a good cleaning.
Now that you've stopped pretending, when can we expect to put up a new gofundme page?
[-]haveacigar4200 1 points - [removed]
The west has plumbing still in use for hundreds of years. India does not. It did not grow infrastructure before colonial times. Why build on shitty real estate when you can just plunder it?
|Everyone does - is still doing - that, we were just honest about it. Kind of like how we're both shit people, but I'm the only one honest about it.
Which society has had such a defined hatred of poor people? So mechanized and autocratic? So immobile? This is why the smartest and hardest working Indians come to the US. You can achieve virtually anything here.
All of India did not become Islam. Treating women like shit has been a human thing for a long time. The West just cut it out earlier and now we just treat them like neo-equals while the eastern cultures still treat them like property.
There may be more REPORTED rape in India but I am curious about the amount that would or can report. Are there more violent, forcible rapes? Statistics?

[-]evenoddz 35 points (1 children)
This incident sickens me to the core, but it is an extreme outlier and your blanket statement contributes nothing to help the situation. With thousands of Indians living in these states what type of message does your post send them? Move? These states are not war zones to avoid.
I acknowledge this story has caused a level of fear, but we should start a dialog. Not a blacklist of states to avoid.
[-]BallPtPenTheif 3 points (1 children)
I honestly don't know why an Indian would move here. They usually interact in isolation from their co-workers who make no attempt to show any interest in their culture. Assumptions about their "smell" are made casually among white people and the non Indian women here won't date them due to their "soft racism".
I have many Indian friends and how they are regarded here compared to LA, is obscene.
Why deal with any of that if you could move to Seattle, be respected by your peers, and marry up some Betty? Nobody deserves to put up with random ignorant cultural stigmas from uneducated idiots.
[-]evenoddz 1 points
Your post is just like OP...give in, move out to Seattle. I live here in KC, work with and are friends with many Indians. There are positive relationships everywhere that represent tolerance and acceptance in our city. Are there incidents of soft racism? Yes, they exist. Are there uneducated idiots here? Yes... but I still argue they are fringe (in the city, at least) and to promote a "why would live here" attitude is to just add to the ease at which the bigots win. Fuck that.
[-]logicperson 2 points
We should be wary of making sweeping generalizations. There might a few bad apples anywhere but wrong to paint the entire state with the same color. Source: been a desi living in one of the listed states for a better part of a decade.

[-]6a6f6b6572 2 points
Not saying there is undercurrent for racism, but I think you are blowing this out of proportion. I am not in anyway trying to downplay the current shooting, but do you think this incident warrants to make a such a dire statement ?

The shooting was in basically a suburb of Kansas City. And like every major city, largely liberal. Missouri and Kansas aren't even Southern states.
[-]BallPtPenTheif 3 points
Please, you know that these rural suburbs are whittled away at the edges by your scary ass swaths of shitty towns full of racist dim witted assholes. Sure, us minorities can find our own little niche in the city and never encounter people from the sticks but they're always poking in and out of cities dirty and on meth.

[-]itsdavidjackson 1 points

[-]osmosis_amoeba 1 points (1 children)
This act and those like it have been seen all over the US and not just in these states. I live about 10 minutes from where this shooting happened and this definitely doesn't characterize the area or the people.
[-]adengappa11paer 3 points
I live in BayArea and no one ever gave me a stare for being brown. If anything people in BayArea are more welcoming than some people back home in India.
[-]itsdavidjackson 1 points
You are insanely wrong. I live in Kansas City, Missouri. Olathe, Kansas is one of our suburbs (we are on the border). Our community is rich and diverse, and we have many, many Indians in our community, as well as many other immigrants. They are our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers, and our family. What this man did is terrifying and shocking to us, because this is not how Kansas Citians behave, and not what life is like here.
We value our Indian population, we value our immigrants. If immigrants stopped coming here, it would be a huge blow to our engineering firms, our research institutions, and our universities. Without immigrants, countless businesses would close. UMKC would have to close. Friendships would be lost. Our culture would be hurt. Immigrants are a key part of Kansas City. We welcome you.

[-]Bernard_Woolley 28 points (4 children)
Agree. This is going overboard. I understand this is a big issue for US-based NRIs, but there are worse things happening to Indians in India for which no stickies are created.
[-]floyd007 20 points (1 children)
I think the sticky's purpose is to make it easier to find the fund me pages so that one can donate. And also for Americans, who may come here to voice their opinion. Finding the news thread in this vast list of threads can be difficult.

Noone is stopping you from helping the people involved in the 'so many incidents happening in India the deserve out attention'. It is foolish to stratify which tragedies deserve help and which don't.
[-]indiancunt 13 points
I am not asking anyone to refrain from helping out. In fact, I would encourage people to help out and I myself donated a small amount to the crowdfunding campaigns. I am merely questioning the need to sticky it on r/India rather than on r/Kansas or any other local sub-reddit, when there are so many important issues in India that are calling for our attention.
[-]Makinjo 11 points
It is foolish to stratify which tragedies deserve help and which don't.
And yet this is the one that is stickied?
[-]Climhazzard73 1 points
Context matters. This does not affect just one person. There are over 3 million people of Indian descent who live in America. There are far, far more immigrants in America from all backgrounds. The current debate on immigration and the rise of the far right has left America more divided than at any point in history since the civil war. We have different government agencies working against each other. Ethnic and political tensions are boiling. Racial violence will stir the pot, and many Indians think that violent attacks and discrimination of all sorts - subtle, overt, and even institutionalized will become more common place towards them. This is a harbringer of things to come
