Goal aside, Southampton definitely the better side for a lot of this half and incredibly unlucky for their goal not counting but we took our chances incredibly well.

The midfield a bit suspect defensively and we have the same LB problems we had all season.

Great goals from Zlatan and Lingard (of course he scores at Wembley).

A bit lucky with that offside goal, but our defense has simply been good enough. If that goal had been given, we'd be drawing, not losing.

Southampton was always going to dominate possession; I'd have expected Pogba to do a MUCH better defensive job today, and I'm sure Jose expected that as well. Southampton always have one or two free players in the #10 position, which is incredibly dangerous. Rojo is struggling as well, and Martial isn't contributing a lot defensively.

I'd imagine Carrick has to come on at some point, probably for Martial. An extra body in midfield should help, but United supporters shouldn't really expect the team to dominate possession; that's Southampton's job. United was always going to absorb the pressure and respond with direct football and/or set pieces. Pragmatic football.

Romeu is prone to getting sent off, I'd imagine United know that and plan to take advantage of that too.

So far, it's textbook United. Makes me suffer, and yet I love it.

Yeah that's what happens when you play 2 box to box MFs in holding roles against a motivated, rested pressing side.

The only reason it's not worse is that Pogba and Herrera have the quality to get through the press, but they are definitely being outnumbered right now.

The bad thing is that smalling is a big part of it too. Maybe not on that particular goal, but often times he's sliding so far over on bailly that Rojo HAS to slide over. They just can't play well together. Either smalling needs to sit for Rojo or Rojo needs to sit for another lb. But smalling and Rojo together is straight suicide

I would imagine that our defense's narrowness is caused by the fact that Southampton was expected to play quite narrowly, which they are doing; the problem is that Martial is nowhere to be found defensively on the left, so Rojo had to decide between following Ward-Prowse or guarding the box; usually, guarding the box is a better choice, but they were a bit unlucky as the cross was absolutely perfect and De Gea went with his foot instead of his hands.

However, Rojo in general hasn't been good today. For a while, Ander was on the left trying to help out Rojo. Martial isn't doing his job, I think.

Rojo has certainly been a liability at left back, as we've seen repeatedly all season. And Bailly is surprisingly having a shaky game at the back too. But we're up with some touches of brilliance. I think moving Mata to the middle of the park will help us get a bit more control in the game.

Half the reason Rojo is getting exposed is because he and Smalling keep having to step into the midfield to pick up their number 10 who has drifted by our midfield. Reminiscent of De Bruyne against us at the beginning of the season. Carrick in there would sure that up and allow for better control in possession.

    Mkhitaryan's absence really shows, despite the two goals we've been lacklustre in midfield, which has given Southampton the opportunity to run at us over and over again. Feel bad for Pogba having almost no support, and having players around him not be on the same wavelength. Rooney would do great for Jesse, as great as his finish was.

    We look like a team that's been playing a game every 3 days. Lethargic and constantly punting the ball up the field instead of building up from the back.     Whole backline has been pretty shaky. Rojo has been real suspect, Smalling has been bad but Bailly has been worse. Valencia is the only one who's having an ok game so far, and even he's had problems.

    Slightly concerned with our performance, more than enough in this for Southampton to turn this around. Pogba's not really doing enough in the defensive phases, Carrick on for Lingard and Pogba moved into cam would see us retain the ball better I reckon.
