I didn’t really pay much attention to the US election. I understood and sympathized that you were stuck between a rock and a hard place with the two candidates as neither seemed ideal for the position, but other than that I merely observed it from a distance.
Lately however, a certain portion of reddit has started insulting and abusing my beloved country by spreading misinformation and spewing blatant hatred towards it, in hopes of legitimizing a questionable remark made by your president Donald Trump.
I wholeheartedly encourage political discussion, but simply rummaging through some old Swedish news articles and declaring yourself an expert regarding the Swedish immigration and integration policy is insanely frustrating.
Imagine if I went around saying “GUYS I FOUND AN ARTICLE AND APPARENTLY SOME MUSLIM FLEW A PLANE INTO SOME BUILDING IN USA, WHAT A SHITTY PLACE TO LIVE IN LE KEK”.
Unfortunately this whole conundrum has impacted the way me, my friends, family and colleagues perceive the US negatively. Even though I’m sure it’s the loud minority speaking, their voice still impacts the average swede and thereby our relation. Simply put I’m getting a “Hey, we used to be friends…” wibe when seeing all these posts shit-talking Sweden.
And for those interested; the reason why Sweden is over-represented in global rape statistics is because in 2012 we reformed our laws regarding the classification of rape. If you look at the statistics, you can see effect of the reform. This is just the answer to one of the many misunderstandings i have seen being thrown around.
Tldr; I fully encourage politic discussion about Sweden's immigration and integration policy. But if all you are going to do is spread misinformation and abuse my country then either educate yourself some more or shut the fuck up. Remember that credibility goes both ways.
