Hate against students

By Zane

After a long time hearing the word I had been just nicely asking to stop. Than my gym teacher used the word to make fun of me.View Story ▼After a long time hearing the word I had been just nicely asking to stop. Than my gym teacher used the word to make fun of me and other students. So I called him out. I took it up with administrators and now I am a part of this group, so PLEASe, for all that's holy, END THE WORD.

Bringing the Lesson Home

By Doug

When my children were small, we had a neighbor who had, among other things, autism. Our kids grew up with him and just knew him as John.View Story ▼When my children were small, we had a neighbor who had, among other things, autism. Our kids grew up with him and just knew him as John. When my daughter was in 2nd grade, she came home with a new rhyme. Well, the rhyme included the r-word. When I heard it, I asked her if she knew what it meant. She said no, so I told her that it was a mean word that people sometimes used to describe people like John. She immediately burst into tears and said she would not use that word again. Bringing that word home and help her connect it with her friend was the best gift she could have received. She not only doesn't use the word, but, at 26, calls her friends out for it when they do.

About Doug:I am completing my 40th year in education. I have a family and live in a rural setting. Proud to forward the message.

Why I took the pledge

By Steve Langford

If you find yourself struggling with the idea of showing persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities a little RESPECT, take the time to meet them.View Story ▼I often conduct fire safety inspection at locations that persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities live. During one of these inspections, I noted a number of the residents (now friends) wearing T-shirts with the “Spread the Word to End the Word” logo. I sat with a group of the residents and they explained not only the campaign to me, but that all they want is to be treated like everyone else. The group also told me that they would like everyone to embrace the word RESPECT. If you find yourself struggling with the idea of showing persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities a little RESPECT, take the time to meet them. Their stories and some of the challenges they have overcome I found truly inspirational. I for one have learned from their honesty and genuine appreciativeness for the little amount of time I am able to give. One young lady told me she is humbled that someone from the fire service is interested in the campaign...I am honored to be a part of it.

About Steve Langford:District Fire Chief/Fire Prevention Officer for the City of Temiskaming Shores.

This is a horrible word

By Madison Scott

I've felt bad for saying the R-word even to my brothers because it can be a mean word.View Story ▼Sometimes my brothers and I call each other names just for fun because we are siblings and stuff, but i've seen people talk about the R-word and that they don't like it, and i've felt bad for saying the R-word even to my brothers because it can be a mean word. I've actually heard someone call this boy with Down syndrome a R-word because he wasn't learning stuff as fast as us and I got really mad about it and I got on to him and I asked him how he would feel if someone called him the R-word...Do you want to know what his answer was? He said, "I wouldn't like it because I know i'm not R-word." So I told him to not call someone else and R-word even if they learn slower than some people. I told him if I catch him doing it again that there would be some consequences because what he did was mean and wrong.

About Madison Scott:My name is Madison Scott, I play volleyball and I do track...I love to read a lot and I sometimes write a little bit, and I hate when people bully other people
