We all know Steve Bannon as the altright guy from Breitbart. We know that he is also now on the National Security Counsel, and that he potentially weaseled his way on there without much knowledge or oversight from Trump. What's less widely known is that Bannon is also a board member of the data mining and social media manipulation company, Cambridge Analytica - the same company that has been widely credited in giving Trump his data-driven advantage in the 2016 election, particularly in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
Then, there's billionaire Robert Mercer), who is a computer scientist and co-CEO of the hedge fund Renaissance Technologies, which was an early adopter of algorithm-heavy quantative trading on Wall Street. Mercer is also incredibly active politically - in 2015, the Washington Post listed him as one of the top 10 most influential billionaires in politics, ahead of both George Soros and Rupert Murdoch. His influence is truly sprawling. It's estimated that Mercer spent nearly $32 million in 2016 alone, with Bloomberg estimating that the was the "largest single donor" in the presidential race. His political activities are truly
extensive) spending nearly $32 million on the 2016 presidential race alone.
Of particular note is the fact that Mercer spent $10 million in 2011 to buy an initial 50% stake in Breitbart.com of which Bannon was a founding member (became executive chair in March 2012). Mercer's middle daughter, Rebekah is reported by The Hill as "tied at the hip" with Steve Bannon and was instrumental in getting both Bannon and Conway into the Trump campaign. A source in The Hill article goes on to say, "The Mercers basically own this campaign... they have installed their people.. and now they've got their data firm in there."
That data firm? Cambridge Analytica. The same company that Steve Bannon boards, and that was pivotal in bringing Silicon Valley AI-driven microtargeting to the political big leagues. Cambridge Analytica claims to have 4000-5000 data points on every single American adult (video ~0:40) which can allow them to precisely microtarget psychologically-based political advertisements - one of the key abilities credited with swinging the three critical Rust Belt states.
So... Let's recap on this picture...
Steve Bannon not only has Breitbart.com at his disposal and a seat on the United States National Security Counsel, but also has the ear of and ability to manipulate President Trump, a world-class data analytics and social media manipulation company, and the backing of one of the most prolific right-wing billionaire donor in the 2016 election.
And people are freaking out over ShareBlue... give me a fucking break.
