Bitcoin is the currency of the Internet: a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Unlike traditional currencies such as dollars, bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. As such, it is more resistant to wild inflation and corrupt banks. With Bitcoin, you can be your own bank.

Community guidelines

  • Do not use URL shortening services: always submit the real link.
  • Begging/asking for bitcoins is absolutely not allowed, no matter how badly you need the bitcoins. Only requests for donations to large, recognized charities are allowed, and only if there is good reason to believe that the person accepting bitcoins on behalf of the charity is trustworthy.
  • News articles that do not contain the word "Bitcoin" are usually off-topic. This subreddit is not about general financial news.
  • Submissions that are mostly about some other cryptocurrency belong elsewhere. For example, /r/CryptoCurrency is a good place to discuss all cryptocurrencies.
  • Promotion of client software which attempts to alter the Bitcoin protocol without overwhelming consensus is not permitted.
  • No referral links in submissions.
  • No compilations of free Bitcoin sites.
  • Trades should usually not be advertised here. For example, submissions like "Buying 100 BTC" or "Selling my computer for bitcoins" do not belong here. /r/Bitcoin is primarily for news and discussion.
  • Please avoid repetition — /r/bitcoin is a subreddit devoted to new information and discussion about Bitcoin and its ecosystem. New merchants are welcome to announce their services for Bitcoin, but after those have been announced they are no longer news and should not be re-posted. Aside from new merchant announcements, those interested in advertising to our audience should consider Reddit's self-serve advertising system.
  • Do not post your Bitcoin address unless someone explicitly asks you to.

No. But that's not the point. What do you want to do with a gun? Become a killer or get killed?
[–]Garland_Key [score hidden]  (23 children)
False dichotomy - it's more likely that the perpetrator would have ran away or backed off. People don't like getting shot.
[–]Thireus [score hidden]  (22 children)
And if the perpetrator is not scared of you or if he feels you are hesitant to use the gun, he will just grab it and shoot you to death. Not sure that's the best solution unless you like playing poker with your life. Not mentioning the fact that you need to know how to use a gun and understand the legal consequences of using it.
Also carrying any sort of weapon is illegal in the U.K., even pepper spray.

A responsible gun owner would train with their firearm so that they don't hesitate and so that taking tactical defense positions is part of their muscle memory.
Thanks - I will never travel to the United Kingdom if I'm unable to defend myself.

A responsible gun owner would not put him/herself in that situation in the first place. Deadly force is for only the gravest extreme for which you have no other option.
Always be mindful of your surroundings (meet at a police "online exchange" location). Always defuse the situation and leave (the minute it gets hairy, walk away). Always retreat (don't back yourself into a corner and never stand your ground). Never brandish (if you touch that firearm, it's because your death is imminent and immediate).
The lawsuit from the other person, especially the wrongful death from their family if you kill them, plus the potential criminal charges if you improperly try and use judicious use of deadly force, will bankrupt you. The media attention and likely jail time will ruin your life.
Please, take a defensive handgun course. And for christ's sake: HESITATE to use it.

Interestingly, at least in Slovakia, you're more likely win court if the person you shot is dead.
But yes, death should be avoided if possible.

Then you had better not travel to most of the world.
The fact is, we have far less violent crime than the US, and our children can go to school without fear of getting shot up, so we're pretty happy with our gun control.
You're kidding yourself if you think this situation was guaranteed to play out safer if people (as well as the criminals) were carrying guns.
[–]musings23 [score hidden]  (0 children)
Hear, hear. Introduce guns and we could have been reading about someone getting shot over this rather than a few bruises.
[–]kixunil [score hidden]  (0 children)
On the other hand, there is a great amount of guns in Switzerland. Probably every house contains one. Yet there is very little gun crime.
In Venezuela, there is very strong ban on guns. Not even guards in bank can have them. Crime is super-high there.
Gun control is no guarantee of peace, just as relaxed laws are not guarantee of it.

I guess if you're talking about firearms crimes. UK has twice the amount of assaults per capita. 22% more property crimes per capita. 35% More car theft per capita. Five times more fraud per capita. Twice as many robbery victims per capita. Hardly the peaceful panacea you make it out to be mate.
[–]hextree [score hidden]  (7 children)
I fail to see what you're achieving by picking and choosing individual statistics for crimes like property, car theft and fraud. The discussion was about violent crime.
[–]DinglebellRock [score hidden]  (6 children)
Fine. Twice the assault rate and twice the robbery rate is still not peaceful... And the point was that your nation isn't doing all that great a job of protecting its citizens well being either from violent crime or stressful financial and property crimes regardless of your restrictive gun laws.
[–]hextree [score hidden]  (5 children)
There are a lot of different kinds of crime in that list. Sure you can identify a few that UK appears to be worse in by about 1%, but that hardly makes up for the vast majority which are worse in the US. Especially more serious ones like gun crime and murder, and more specific examples like police brutality and school shootings.
I never claimed UK is 'peaceful', crime exists everywhere, but comparatively speaking it's a very safe country.
[–]DinglebellRock [score hidden]  (4 children)
Twice the amount is 200% not 1%. The vast vast majority of people outside of lower income urban areas never experience any real violent crime. Not saying we shouldn't do better by those areas in a lot of ways not just criminal justice areas but your fears and beliefs aren't a reality experienced by most.
[–]Garland_Key [score hidden]  (0 children)
The fact is. . .
Not /r/guns - ending discussion.
[–]Etoiles_mortant [score hidden]  (1 child)
And a responsible criminal , you know one that was willing to try and steal 7k in plain view, would probably own a gun himself and shot you before asking questions.
[–]zeria [score hidden]  (0 children)
The stats don't bear this out at all, I guess you're assuming US levels of gun prevalence.
"The number of gun murders per capita in the US in 2012 - the most recent year for comparable statistics - was nearly 30 times that in the UK, at 2.9 per 100,000 compared with just 0.1 (per 100,000 in the UK)."
[–]Turil [score hidden]  (2 children)
Shooting someone (or even considering it) is not defense, it's offense.
If someone is simply trying to take your money, then defenseis to not have money on you, or to have it hidden. Defense is a shield that prevents you from harm, not a weapon that harms others.
And if you don't feel like you can defend yourself without a gun, then maybe you should get some therapy. Being afraid to even just walk around without a gun seems like you might have PTSD or something.
[–]Garland_Key [score hidden]  (1 child)
Ugh - this isn't /r/guns, so I'll just disagree with everything you said and leave it at that.
[–]Turil [score hidden]  (0 children)
If you do want to talk about guns, or feel the need to argue in general against my perspective, or even just share your own perspective with me, feel free to continue this discussion over at a post I just made as my response, /r/continued.
