There's a fine line between /badpolitics/ and an unpopular opinion but I'm gonna make an argument for it this comic being badpolitics: https://www.reddit.com/r/PoliticalHumor/comments/5us5pb/as_democracy_is_perfected/ . Here's my R2.
The comic references the great satirist HL Mencken (for an unrelated but excellent writing sample: https://www.paradise-engineering.com/misc/) predicting that as democracy becomes deeper and more pervasive, the government will more and more be a mirror image of the electorate, for better or worse. Obviously, the message is that the American people deserve Trump. The gist of the comic is very similar to this one from the New Yorker: http://www.newyorker.com/cartoons/a20630
First of all the comic is based on false pretenses, that this election truly represents democracy in action.
1. Trump lost the popular vote in the election.
2. The voter turnout was the lowest it's been in 20 years in America, which already ranks near the bottom among industrialized democracies for voter turnout.
3. The election was a choice between deeply unpopular candidates, BOTH of whom set historic records for unpopularity, so it's ridiculous that either choice could have been called a manifestation of the popular will.
4. Trump's approval rating right now is at about 38%.
Second, the comic's underlying message is the one that runs through many a liberal thinkpiece: the people of America are "narcissistic morons" who can't be trusted to run their own country, and governing should be left to the wise, educated elite class of economists, policy wonks and technocrats who can do the job. Although this is technically a valid political view, it's in sharp contrast with basic concepts of political theory - that pluralistic democracy is one of the most stable and effective forms of government (and probably in contrast with the empirical evidence of the Iraq War and economic crisis of 2008).
