Defence has been really dodgy tonight, we're very lucky to not have conceded. I don't think the midfield is balanced enough, none of Herrera, Pogba or Fellaini are particularly defensively minded and it means the back four doesn't have as much protection as they should. Although individual mistakes have been a real problem as well.

Think the back four have actually been decent, save for Bailly's passing.

It's the midfield which has been at fault for their chances.

Although we're are still leading, the passing is a lot sloppy and have no rhythm. Hopefully the second half it get's better. We definitely need atleast a two goal lead to take from a home match.

These FS1 commentators are absolutely horrific. Have mistake Smalling/Pogba/Valencia for each other several times so far. Absolutely taking the piss this first half.

But, to summarize the first half IMO:

  • Mata is everywhere

  • Herrera doing about everything as well

  • Fellaini cant sort out his own feet

  • Bailly & Smalling don't look like they're communicating well. (leaving huge gaps in the back line)

I hate picking on Fellaini but I absolutely hate our midfield when he starts, we always fails to control the game. He plays like a second striker leaving us a creative outlet short in the mf when we have the ball and obviously he doesn't score like a striker.

I don't get the love for Fellaini, he is so extremely average and ruins the balance of our midfield. Can't pass, can't shoot, can't tackle and even with his height he is a pretty shit header of the ball. He is simply not good enough, I'd prefer pretty much any other midfielder to Fellaini.

    Herrera isn't playing well for me either. He rarely wants to have the ball for more than 3 seconds. I hate when a midfielder gets the ball and then immediately passes it back to the person who gave it to him. Especially if it was a defender. I mean, come on. You are the one supposed to creating chances. Why pass it back when there is no pressure on you?

    Would be interesting to see what Mou changes at half time. (Something has to, we've been lucky let's be honest).

    The way I see it, Fellaini has been instructed to stay high (mostly in the right channel) for us to find him with long balls to bypass their midfield press. It's not working though, the result is that he's caught upfield and cannot help with regaining or retaining possession. Something needs to change. If it were possible Mkhi would be the ideal guy to replace him.

    We are getting so exposed in the midfield. Fellaini says he wants to be a DM but he gets caught out a lot, as does pogba. We need to settle back in. A lot of our counters at the end of the half were wasted because we tried to play a stupid rushed long pass. Let's come back out and look to simplify our play.

    Full-backs (particularly on the right) seem to be caught out of position too much. No defensive presence in the midfield area, there is far too much space there. If you watch our midfield, they are always caught tracking back to get in front of their man.

    Very poor. We have the lead through a jammy goal and have left our defence totally exposed on 3-4 occasions. Bailly has had to bail himself out following a couple of disastrous mistakes and Fellaini is not capable of creating anything in his current role, and only Martial has any threat.

    St Etienne is finding way too much space in our half, good thing their finishing is very lacklustre. Mata is playing very well, Zlatan shouldn't have had that freekick that led to a goal, and it looked like they should've had a pen from the Blind situation. We're still creating good chances and held onto the clean sheet so im not too worried about second half. Alexi Lalas is pain.

    Valencia looking poor IMO, I guess he has been instructed to play high up the pitch but he's been caught out of position a number of times. Bailly has been poor mentally but has bailed himself out with his athleticism. Fellaini should be taken off too, seems like Herrera and Pogba have slid over to cover for him a number of times, leaving space in midfield and forcing Smalling higher up to occupy that space.
