Comprehension Passage I

‡John Okon had been standing trial for a two-count charge of murder and conspiracy. This morning, he was brought to the court in a black Maria. Two years of confinement and poorfeeding have made him gaunt and frail. As he trudged along weekly to the dock, he looked roundand his yes met those of his wife who had all along stood by him. All his friends were no longer there. He wondered in his mind. If he would ever set out these trumped-up charges contrived by his political opponents.     The sudden shout of ‘C-O-U-R-T!’awakened himfrom his reverie. His counsel, Barrister Laotan was the first to address the court. He contended that the premises on which the case was predicated were too weak for an offence that carried a death penalty. He therefore urged the court to dismiss the case. The prosecuting police officer objected to this. He sought a long adjournment instead to enable him conclude investigation on the case.     The presiding judge justice Daodu, in his judgment decried the manner in which the police had been handling the case. This coupled with the fact that the legs on which the case stood were made it expedient for the case to be struck out. John Okonwas therefore discharged and acquitted  Learn Comprehension

Passage II

The death last month of Chief Dende has opened my eyes. Throughout his life, we were very close friends. We grew up together, attended the same primary and secondary schools, and joined the civil service the same day. Although we benefitted from different in-service training programmes and at different times during our respective careers. We were never too distant from each other. And were installed chiefs the same day. Above all, his wife, Adanma, and mine have been good friends over the year.
All these years, I believed that my friend kept no secret from me. I could, and did occasionally, defend his integrity. Any where people discussed him in my hearing; I was ready to take up his cases vehemently. Predictably, people stopped discussing him any time I was around. I had assumed, erroneously as it turned out that people had stopped discussing him because they were sufficiently educated and sincerely convinced about his integrity. Happenings have since shattered that assumption.
The first shock came a day after his death. The major national newspaper carried his obituary, as advertisement, a day after the event was strange; particularly more puzzling was the advertiser. All my life, l had known only Adanma as his wife and her five children. Besides, the manes of ‘his’ three children by Adanma.
Before I recovered from the first shock, the next bombshell fell .Members of the Apata fraternity, a most dreadedsecret cult, which Dende and I had despised while he lived, announced in the dailies that they had the exclusive right to bury their ‘departed colleague’ The announcement warned all uninvited persons to keep off ‘in their own interest. And so it was that members of the fraternity, supporting their claim with a hand-writtenwillby Dende collected his body from the hospital, performed the last rites on him and buried him in their sacred grove.
I have learnt and I am still learning, I have reached the unpleasant conclusion that his critics were most probably right after all
