SPOILERS AHEAD
For those who haven't seen the Film, and don't care about spoilers, I'll link the Wikipedia so you can get caught up on the plot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_La_Land_(film)
In my opinion, La La Land is a MGTOW movie, although perhaps not intentionally. For the longest time, Hollywood has been promoting the Guy and the Girl falling in love, and engaging in a long term relationship. This is the "happy ending", and we enjoy relationship dramas like these because "they were made for each other" or "they're so cute together". The ending of this movie fights against that narrative, and is why I wrote this post.
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have the typical chemistry you'll find in a good romance movie, and we see them connect throughout the first half of the film. This all comes crashing down when Ryan finds a well-paying job working for a band that pays the bills. Even though he doesn't enjoy it, he wants to support his girlfriend during her attempt at an acting career. He even tries to spend more time with her, but she refuses to go on the road with the band, because she "has to practice in LA". She's so obsessed with her dream that she ignores Ryan's attempts to help. Even worse, she breaks up with him BECAUSE he isn't the same idealist he used to be, despite forcing him to make that choice by her obsession with being famous!*(and not having a real job)
Ryan shows up to her house and gets her to audition one more time. This pays off, and she becomes a celebrity. It's unclear who friendzoned who, but they separate and go their own way (see what I did there?). Ryan achieves his dream of owning his own Jazz club, and Emma finds another man.
I see Ryan as a manipulated guy, finally realizing that his relationship was dragging him down. He sacrificed his dream to be with a woman, and at first he was happy. But after all his suffering, he finally woke up to his reality. She was dragging him down, and he was too drunk with love to realize what was happening. He achieves his goal in life, and it was because he became MGTOW.
