Fantastic book. I highly recommend the Jocko Podcast as well; it tends to mostly be Jocko reading excerpts from military books but he relates it back to the book using these real-world examples. Cool war stories and advice on how to be a badass - what more could you want?

Jocko? How long do the episodes last?

Recently discovered Jocko, and wrote "Discipline equals freedom" on me mirror last week. Definitely putting this book on my "to read" list.

Have it as screensaver on my phone, so when my alarm goes off at 5 am and I don't want to get up, I see that quote glaring back at me telling me get up lazy fucker

I fairly enjoyed the book, but I cannot recommend Jocko Podcast enough. It's great for military and just those wanting to improve or gain new perspectives.

Totally changed my daily mindset. One example- I now wake up at 330 every weekday to eat/meditate/prep for the day followed by the gym at 5 before doing another workout with my Platoon for pt at 630. Before I would have woke up probably 550 and regularly been pushing being late.

I also just have generally more time(freedom) outside of work now. Discipline truly equals freedom.

How have you made the transition to sleeping earlier?

Own the book since it first came out. Excellent stuff for crystallizing many concepts that most of us know about, but were not applying consistently.

The Jocko Podcast is fantastic for taking the lessons of the book and having them applied over, and over, and over. Good guests. Good book readings.

First 25 minutes of #58 is rough. Be warned now.

Don't go Rambo.

But it's okay to go Winchester.

Jocko is the shit. The mofo alpha leader everyone here aspires (or should aspire) to be.

Listened to his podcasts since he was on Tim Ferris and it changed my life in ways that only TRP did. TRP for understanding, Jocko for action, 2 pillars of my improvement.

When in doubt, or weak, or down, unmotivated, overwhealmed, going through tough times etc, I literally ask myself 'what would Jocko do?'. And I know the answer... 'prioritize and execute', 'no excuses', 'good', 'get after it'.

It is always good to be confident. But do not get cocky or complacent. [...] You aren’t always right and you need to be able to admit that.

This is great. Too often I see people act aggressive and cocky thinking they are just being confident.

They are not. Beasts are aggressive when they are hurt or scared and we humans aren't different. If you feel the urge to assault others when you have a discussion you are just a scared animal, not a Man.

Stone Cold Steve Austin recommends the book as well.

If you like the message of this book, I highly reccommend checking out his podcast. It's topics range a bit, and some rambling does occur but there is always and explicit message to take away. The people he brings on for interviews are pretty rad and have awesome stories, and you can feel the find your tribe vibe going down in then.

Agree on ownership and motivation, disagree on women:

ASK HER WHY

This makes as much sense as asking a duck why it quacks. Women can not and will not tell men the reasons for their actions, so it is a demonstration of your weakness that you have to ask.

Your wife is not actively trying to sabotage you, view her as your teammate, not the enemy.

Actually women really are (consciously or not) often trying their very best to sabotage you and the relationship. If she can find a stronger option then she'll use that option against you, for no reason other than that it appears stronger to her and therefore a better source of resources and protection. This can be in the form or another man or these days the state itself (eg false violence charges preceding divorce).

Marriage undermines your leadership options exactly because it empowers her to divorcerape you. Regardless of how alpha you think you are, women will always take the best option (Hypergamy and Briffault's law are biologically determined and non-negotiable) - and the state gives her more control over your resources if she divorces you than if she stays.

Do Not Marry

The parent mentioned Ability To Perform. Many people, including non-native speakers, may be unfamiliar with this word. Here is the definition(In beta, be kind):

Ability to perform ensures that both parties in a transaction have the financial capacity to complete a transaction. Companies and individuals with higher credit ratings have a higher ability to perform. [View More]

IMO the book isn't amazing as far as educational volume goes, but it's a very entertaining listen, and the author is able to communicate his message in such a way that you'll most definitely remember most of it.

I absolutely recommend the Audible version for the storytelling!
