Update to the doxing situation (self.pussypassdenied)

Thank you to everyone for your continuing support. To everyone who replied to the original announcement or messaged us privately, your words of kindness mean a lot.

Unfortunately the situation is not looking good. We've been targeted as a "hate sub" in the past and honestly I don't care, everyone is allowed their point of view no matter how wrong it is.

Online threats mean nothing to us, I don't know how many times we've been called women abusers, misogynists, psychos, virgins, faggots or how many times we've been told to kill ourselves. But its always been in the realm of online and online threats mean nothing to us - you very quickly get a thick skin modding here (and we wouldn't have been chosen as mods if we didn't already have a thick skin as it is haha).

The problem is now they are trying to take this offline and try and use real life details to cause trouble. In the past people have lost their job, lost their family or even gotten national attention from doxxing ruining their lives - think violentacrez back from the 2011 days and any of the right wing mods from the recent election. It's straight up bullying, terrorising and intimidation.

At the moment we are monitoring the situation. The initial threat came that they want us to give the control of PPD to them so they can shut the sub down - and if we don't they will release personal information about us then use that information against us i.e. phoning our places of employment, harassing family members etc.

Personally I've not been targeted specifically but I know that some of the older mods have been - some of their real personal info was revealed to them, more than enough that we took this threat legitimately.

Alot of the mod team are seriously considering stepping down over this. Whilst we all truly believe in the subs message of equality, it's not worth ruining our lives. We'll keep everyone posted but this unfortunately feels like we're fighting a losing battle.

The primary issue is that our stated online opinions are controversial enough to cause us trouble, they don't actually have to lie - employers wouldn't want the hit to their reputations if this became public, even though we've done nothing wrong.

A few hours ago I received word from /u/mustaka that unfortunately the doxers carried out some of their threat and did contact his employer. He says that although there are no immediate consequences he is under review and it's quite possible he won't need to return on Monday. Our thoughts are with him, this shouldn't happen to anyone.

It appears though that this is just the beginning and apparently he is just the first. As developments happen we shall keep everyone informed.

Once again thank you for your all for your continued support. We do this for you guys and it's nice to know it's appreciated. For however long it lasts anyway.

They do not represent the feelings or opinions of any real world entity. And that's all you have to say. Also remember that being removed from a job, fired, etc... for something a fictitious character said or did is grounds for a discrimination lawsuit. You should consult a lawyer on how to handle this. Not only for your employer firing you, but also for seeking damages from the person(s) as laws may have been broken. Any lawyer who things you have a strong case should be able to get you started on the condition that they take a cut of your lawsuit winnings.

You can head over to /r/legaladvice for feedback on the matter and consult local lawyers. Try to get subpoena through reddit and your employer for this doxxer's information so you may pursue damages and possibly reveal other doxxers behind this.

Mentioning the employer is a bad idea, because either 1) we'll harass them or 2) someone will harass them in our name. And Mustaka would get the blame for it. Let's not get the poor guy into any more trouble.

Can't the doxxers be exposed themselves?

If you could track down the doxxers and expose them to the police, that would be terrific. But there's some information asymmetry at play here: they don't have to expose any part of who they are to dox you. So that's never going to happen.

A fresh reddit account messages you your own address and employer. What can you do with that?

What you need to do before that happens: delete your WhitePages, don't use the same username on places where you have controversial opinions, hide your facebook account from the wider internet, set up google alerts for your powerword, etc. When you have opinions you might get fired for, get paranoid. When you post on subreddits like this one, get paranoid.

That doesn't mean you need to be scared, of course. It does mean that you should stay vigilant. And you can avoid like, 99% of all of that work just by not sharing information about yourself on the internet.

What's the legal status of this behavior?

Mustafa's in the clear, nothing wrong here in terms of the law. So you'd think that firing him doesn't make sense. Except that in the US, most people are hired "at-will" and can be fired at any time for any reason except for the ones set out in wrongful termination law (like being a member of a particular race or gender, just as two simple examples). So his firing is entirely legal. Just really really shitty.

Ask lawyers to force Reddit to disclose the IP of the doxxer. (If this can be done in the USA, and if hopefully they didn't use foreign proxies.)

Get the FBI involved since this is a credible threat, they got involved for the fake threats against Anita S and anti GG.

Yeah, you could get a subpoena written up and sent to Reddit.

But I doubt anything will come of it, because they very likely used Tor or some other proxy thing.

Still, it's worth a try.

As per the FBI, yeah, it's some kind of intimidation or harassment or something. So I'm sure you could get them involved. Again, though, it's unlikely anything will come of it.

Hello, I am a doxer. I have doxed multiple people, and I like to do things like send Qurans to their employer under their name and send them pizza during live streaming - always the best when their mom comes into their room to ask if they ordered a pizza while they're in the middle of a game.

It's pretty simple, people like to create a brand for themselves online, so they'll have handles that stretch back over a decade. You find their real name, and a general location that they have lived in, and reverse lookup on them. Connect the dots with family members, and you have their Facebook or LinkedIn, where people list their employer.

I do recon by fire with the pizza delivery to confirm the address. If there's 3 possible addresses, all of them get pizza, and if the person is stupid enough(or smart enough), they'll announce online that people are sending them pizza. Or if they're a live streamer, you can hear their doorbell ring.

Tips to not be doxable:

  • have separate handles for everything

  • don't link your handles to each other

  • don't buy a house in your name - county tax records are public

  • don't have a Facebook, or if you must, don't link to your online handles from it, and for the love of God, don't post the same exact things on Facebook that you post from your pseudo-anonymous accounts.

  • don't put your real name out there

  • don't say where you go to school

  • don't say where you work

And my personal favorite,

  • have a name that is on the top 10 most common names in America

I lucked out in that department, but that doesn't always protect you. I've doxed John Smith before.

Also, it's really important to teach your children these tactics. Unless it's for work or school, it doesn't need your real name or real email address.

  • use throwaway email addresses for registering accounts online.

Don't ever trust the admin of a website.

doxing people is entertaining and perfectly legal fun. I mean, sure I might get a harassment lawsuit out of it in the future, but that would involve them doxing me to file a lawsuit against me, which is apparently a hard task for them to do. People are definitely trying though. I don't follow any of my own tips because I too have an online brand, and I get blamed for doxing people when I had no involvement with doxing them, but "known doxer" is part of that brand.

I have morals, so most of my shenanigans is harmless. At worst your boss might ask you why is there a stack of 50 Qurans addressed to you showing up at your workplace. Other people take it too far, SWATing, attempting to get you fired, calling CPS.

I also think it's pretty funny that people are scared of me online. "Oh no! He'll dox me!!"

One guy pissed me off, and in digging into him we found an old account on a beastiality website where he posted fantasies about fucking his dog. Sick bastard.

I haven't posted on Reddit in a couple months now. I can even say I really never used this sub. I, however, have been following Reddit's censorship and ongoing, tacit approval of harassing people they don't like. This sub may not get shut down, but if it wasn't clear to anyone before, it should be now. Reddit does not like anyone who isn't a part of their narrative.

What I do encourage you all to do is head on over to Voat. Is there a lot of nasty stuff over there? Sure. But you know what? You have to take the good with the bad. You don't have to actively engage in any content you don't like. While any private company is free to run their platform however they see fit, it is unacceptable when they tell everyone they're a platform for free speech when it is in fact something different. Voat, at the very least, is a platform of free speech.

Fuck Reddit. It's time to migrate. You all visit other subs. Which one of those is next?
