Was there a Scientology commercial??? It's trending on Twitter with a lot of comments about it but I missed it- I don't see it in this list.

Damn, if I didn't know what Scientology was I'd be curious about this. I guess that's how they getcha!

I feel like that'd be a perfect commercial in an episode of Black Mirror.

Reminds me of that commercial promoting sentinels in Days of Future Past or the main company in Better off Ted.

did this air everywhere? I don't remember seeing this in Las Vegas

They definitly did some local shenanigans with the ads.

We didn't get stranger things 2 and something else I remember people talking about, local ads probably went over them. I'm pretty sure I didn't get the scientology one either, but I remember both the one before and after it.

My friend a state over said his walking dead ads were replaced with locals, and he probably missed more.

Forgot to include it haha, I thought it was local

That seriously sounds insane to me, is it a normal thing in the US for lunatic cults to have TV commercials on national broadcasts like that?

Nope, just Scientology and their ads are usually very rare, though they air one during the Superbowl every year.

I have been lucky to be living in a market that never airs the Scientology ad for as long as I've been watching. Thank Xenu for that.

I was wondering if they were doing commercials this year. We certainly didn't see any here, so they weren't national. Going to listen to Leah Remini on Joe Rogan later tonight.

scientology propaganda = a'ok

84 lumber wants to realistically depict an immigrant family's situation in america today? try again motherfuckers

Oh shit stranger things 2 fuck yea!!!!

What a fucking tease!

Probably my favorite commercial of the night.

Agreed. Several repeat commercials and nothing funny or unique.

Are they fighting Cthulhu? Cause that spidery-thing looked Lovecraftian to me.

The funny level has been low IMO. I did chuckle at the Skittles commercial and lol'd at the Buick one, but compared to years past, bleh

I enjoyed the Buick one. The bullet pass got a chuckle out of me.

That was it? That's the reason Trump's Chumps are boycotting Budweiser?

I think the had to edit the ad somewhat so the network would air it. It looked different from the version I saw before.

[–]child_sized_tequila 6 ポイント7 ポイント  (1子コメント)

I think the original had more emphasis on hating on immigrants

Star Wars please?!

Probably not going to happen. Kathleen Kennedy said we'd see the first footage in the spring, and Disney announced they had 2 movie trailers: Guardians of the Galaxy and Pirates of the Caribbean.

It's possible they kept Star Wars secret I suppose, but the Kennedy/Spring quote is way older. I think it's safe to assume we're not going to see it now.

Some people are speculating we might get it in front of Beauty & the Beast but I think that falls in the same boat.

I'm betting either May gets us a Thor teaser/trailer in front of GotG & then Star Wars in front of Pirates or they'll release it at Celebration in April, run Star Wars in front of GotG a couple weeks later & Thor in front of Pirates after that

Super Bowl commercials were good for like a 3 year span around seventeen years ago and have been living off that rep ever since.

Since the internet and rise of the "Viral Video" it seems every ad is now just a random scenario with a catchphrase that ends with a celebrity cameo made with the intention of hoping to go viral

You can say that about most things.

Burning Man was better next year.

At least they managed to keep the commercials off of YouTube before the game this year.

Uncanny valley. They look like almost people. It's ok to me, but I can see why some people find it creepy/weird.

Surely the Lumber 84 ad that actually aired during the game wasn't six minutes. That would cost more than building an actual border wall.

No they showed a shortened version. At the end they said to check out the full version.

Still something like 90 seconds. Must have been pricey, and I'm sure they're triggering a lot of backlash.

The original short version wasn't aired either, FOX made them edit it to be less controversial.

No, you need Aflac, didn't you pay attention to the duck who does a bad Gilbert Gottfried impression?

Anyone who's experienced the VA healthcare system.

And with single payer the VA wouldn't exist so they could just go to a regular hospital or doctor.

Right--but it already is a single payer system in the US... yet, somehow, it seems to have all the characteristics opponents warn about.

Long waits, legendary bureaucratic inefficiency, no shortage of funding, yet the result is so terrible that many give up and seek care through the private marketplace (despite the costs). Our existing system is awful, but let's not pretend making it government-run won't lead to these same problems--even if it's sunshine and rainbows in some western European countries.

...and that's how you can watch that commercial and not think, "That's why we need single payer."

The coca-cola one, I think, was from the 2014 Super Bowl ads, where everyone sings in different languages.

You know what? I really want Budweiser to just have their adds with just a ghost Spudz causing hijinks and teaching life lessons. That was my favorite commercial to be honest.

Not gonna lie. I laughed out loud at that Mr. Clean commercial.

Man, the T-Mobile ad with Beiber was horrible. It's like watching a company flush money down the toilet.

The Honda ad was a bit unique, but otherwise the non-movie trailers are junk.

Edits: Tide was good because Jeff Tambor.

Transformers - either Anthony Hopkins is getting desperate for money or maybe the Transformers will be the first decent one?

And finally, a decent adaptation of the Handmaiden's Tale?

Squarespace was good - I should watch Being John Malkovich again.

If an ad hurts us, we still remember it, perhaps moreso. So they've achieved their goal in that way as well.

[–]Iggy_Pops_Lost_Shirt 11 ポイント12 ポイント  (2子コメント)

Is the Johnny Cash Ragged Old Flag video they showed before the game available anywhere? As of writing this, only two uploads of it exist on youtube with very bad quality.

I hope it becomes available soon. I was switching back and forth between pre-game and the Phoenix Open when it came on. It probably won't happen, but one can only wish that Cash's Ragged Old Flag would be shown during any major televised sports event in days to come.

That commercial has been the most cathartic thing for me since the inauguration. I wept loudly for ten minutes after watching it. My optimism and faith in immigrants is wound up in that ad. I've worked construction and hospitality almost my entire life, the lazy immigrant is the most toxic of stereotypes, it is the lie of all lies.

I've never met an immigrant, legal or not when hasn't earned their place in this country. I really do mean that sincerely.

Non US here, couple of days ago i read some article about superbowl ads.
In the article, one of the fact is very interesting to me. It is said many viewers were not watching the superbowl, but only to watch the ads.

ninja edit :
certain age group, not the whole population.

18-to-30-year-olds were the only age group polled that preferred Super Bowl commercials (26 percent) to the game itself (24 percent).
Source :
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/yougov-super-bowl-commercials-game_us_56b105d3e4b0a1b96203f436

Seeing this threads pop-up is becoming another confirmation (for me) that (edit:some) viewers actually interested to watch ads than the game itself..

My question is, why ? What makes superbowl ad (to US viewers) is interesting to watch ? I mean it's an ads, just like any other ads? Or is it not ?
Most of the time we either skip it (change channel), even blocked it (on internet).

Btw, Thanks OP for compiling the ad into one list, this is very interesting to me.

To expand on the answers you already got, I think the reason companies started making bigger, fancier ads for the superbowl is because this is basically the televised event of the year - the biggest audience you're going to get for a single ad all year.

So, there's a lot of demand for that ad space. So they cost a lot. So the people buying them have to really make every second of it count, and impress as much of that huge audience as possible.

Of course, by now it's an established tradition. But that would be how it started.

Ads make you aware of things you might otherwise never encounter. I know that hating advertisement is the cool thing to do nowadays but I don't mind them in the right context if I get to learn about an intriguing new product or service. The Superbowl Ads usually have higher production values and are better quality than the average ad. I don't believe advertising can brainwash you or anything (some people really do think this), so if you can divorce yourself from the kneejerk "they want me to spend money!" and accept it for what it is you can be pleasantly surprised by the little stories they try to set up.

Heck that Budweiser ad looked like a movie trailer I'd actually want to see, that was good.

It started when the Superbowl ads were only viewable during the Super Bowl, no youtube or replays. The ads were on another level of production from normal ads, usually more of a spectacle.

Now the ads during the Super Bowl, while still trying to be a spectacle, are more of where you premier your new ads, and companies pull out all the stops to show off their ads. Also, that carry over from pre-youtube commercials has kind of made Super Bowl commercials something to talk about with people the following week, and no one wants to be out of the loop.

Superbowl ads are know to be especially funny. Companies spend extra time and money on these slots and they're usually good - also they're usually played less times. Also, football is boring.

The ads during the Super Bowl are almost entirely new, featuring much larger budgets, and are sometimes almost like mini movies. The advertisers take more handed to make themselves stand out, and it's nice to see what they come up with. Also, there tend to be premieres of trailers for several blockbuster films, shows, etc.

I am one of those who only watches it for the ads unless my team is in.

The reason a lot of people do that is because the Superbowl is the biggest TV event in the country and businesses know this. So, to get more business themselves, they make their most entertaining, funniest, heartwarming, etc ads and play them because most of the country is tuned in to watch the game meaning they're getting more people who may buy their product.

it's not just the super bowl. I'll often be watching a show, and be bored out of my mind, but only keep watching it for the ads.

These companies are dumping millions of dollars to try to get my attention and get me to buy their product. They know they're going to have to dance like some fucking monkeys, be really catchy, or something interesting.

A commercial comes on and they've got my attention. Dance monkeys, dance! Often disappointing, but the ones that win out I'll often check out whatever they were pushing. It's like when door to door salesmen come to the door. I open with a smile and great ready to hopefully enjoy the show.

And I think more people want to be pandered to than they realize. They hate breaks in what they are currently doing, but secretly love people begging for their attention and refuse to acknowledge it.

It was marketed as "Super Bowl 50", not L. L typically means "loss" so they didn't want to associate with losing. Plus "Super Bowl L" looked dumb when they were coming up with logos, so they scrapped it.

Do all these mobile games really make enough money for all these ads. Who really pays real money for these clash of generic word games.

Popular mobile games completely eclipse even blockbuster movies and high budget games in terms of revenue / profit.

Clash of Clans brought in over $1.5 billion in 2015 / 2016.

Micro-transactions for games have been one of the most successful money making schemes in entertainment history. These games make ungodly amounts of money. I believe I read the grand total for revenue from Candy Crush is well over $10 billion since it was released. (That's combined total over 5 or 6 years....although the game has been dropping steadily in popularity as other games took its place.) Activision ended up shelling out $6 billion to buy it's developer *King Digital back in 2015. Crazy.

yes

Mobile games are a fucking gold mine IF you can get popular. Hell even only the mid popular ones make huge bank. In fact mobile games have outshined the traditional gaming industry, by quite a lot. Problem is people saw this, and now there are a million carbon copy games on the store. So what do you do then? Invest in advertising. Hard. Kate Upton for Game of War, Arnold for Mobile Strike, this gets people.

And they spend tons of money in these games. Cashshop games are the thing of the current decade, even though it's been around awhile. Partly why even fully priced console/pc games are diving hard into nickle and dime in game purchases.

Just to get some statistic to back me up here (do note these are slightly dated articles, but I doubt the market has changed much in 1-2 years):

https://thinkgaming.com/app-sales-data/3352/game-of-war-fire-age/

Says game of war makes $739,337 revenue every day, with 29,202 people installing it every day. (I actually checked what mobile strike is right now. It makes 1.3 MILLION dollars every single day)

Anyone else see the potato with advertisement written on it?

I didn't see it but judging from Twitter, it was paid for by the Cards Against Humanity folks. Was it literally just a static 30 second shot of a potato with "advertisement" written on it?

So my 5 year old was apparently freaked out by an ad right before halftime...I can't figure it out because I want in the room. Anyone have any ideas? According to this list I can't find anything.
