A 1btc ransom for harming two kids? You are dealing with a teenager here.

Basically he's dealing with a shitty doxxer, considering his username could be his real name.

Really, I use my real name and never had a problem.

It's a risk Dakota. Think of the Beans family!

I was working at a payment processor and we got hit with a 20,000 ransom last year. Step 1 - police. Gave up on the CPS when they came for a meeting that turned out to be a tutorial on how they should view and reply to emails. It was fucking insane. Step 2 - Tell them to fuck off and buy backup servers, 20,000 worth. Never happened again, if it did we would migrate to the new setup.

Step 3 one day will be accountability. Catching little punk fuck who likes to threaten children. I feel bad for OP, but one day, the reverse will play itself out, and the people behind these randsoms will fucking learn that if they want to play the game, they should play it with other people who play the game, and if they want to attack innocent people, the consequences for them will not be worth it. I can't wait for the day theses fucks are exposed. They too, have family members.

Wife wants me to contact authorities to report and also become more private. I really don't want to waste a lot of time, but if I were to report I would like to report to someone with the proper skill set. Advice is appreciated.

I guess u should report it to LE. But im not sure how they could help short of body guarding ur kids, which im not sure they would.

This threat seems empty to me. If they meant business they would prob ask for more money

This threat seems empty to me.

Let the cops decide that. They have more experience to make the distinction. If they have an easy way to find the perpetrator (i.e. if they gave themselves away somehow), then all the better.

[–]i_can_get_you_a_toe [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

In all probability, you just got doxed, and they're trying to scam you out of 1btc. Threat is not very credible. You would be doing the world a favour if you sick LE on the scum that sent it, tho.

I agree with wife, about you needing some opsec. Don't leak personal info where it's not necessary. Like, you don't need your name on stupid reddit.

If you actually have twins, fit them out with call home / SOS watches that they can wear at all time. I've been eying: https://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-gsm-kids-watch-sos.html?site=glo&SortType=total_tranpro_desc&SearchText=gsm+kids+watch+sos

Something like that is a very cheap insurance against all kinds of normal trouble kids may get into (falling off a bike), and if they are typically together they can watch out for each other. Also, you both can call them both through the watch and threaten to withdraw dessert privileges or screen time if they don't come before the food gets cold a.k.a. RIGHT NOW :)

these are going to take a month to get there lol

If you actually have twins then report it, otherwise ignore. Sending money won't make them go away anyway. The low price is could be just a way to get you used to paying them.

[–]MoneroMEredditor for 23 days [

If this were me I would definitely report it to the police. If there is a slim chance it is a genuine threat then you will be pleased that you did. If it is just some punk kid then it will teach him a lesson to threaten someone's family like that.

Sounds like some punk kid making an empty threat. But it is a threat and you should report it. Reddit knows users IP addresses and will share any identifying information with law enforcement if there is credible evidence of a crime.

Always report. If the harassment towards your family continues, having several reports filed will help get you prioritised so they actually go knock on doors until they find which kid has been stealing which grandma's wifi to post threats.

My first thought was simply to ignore this, but I thought I would post it for input. If anyone wants to follow up on it or if you think I should, please let me know.

In all likelihood this is a bullshit threat. However you should probably at minimum:

  1. Delete your account and create another

  2. Don't use your real full name as your account username...

  3. Make all facebook or other social site information private to non-friends.

  4. Try and be more private online in general. It's really easy to piece someone's identity/address together starting with a few small facts.

Also I personally think you should probably contact the police. Even if it's 99% likely to be a bullshit threat, could you live with not trying to go to the police if something did happen?

I would add to this, carry a gun.

Maybe carry a gun if you don't mind it being used on yourself. As research indicates this is a strong possibility

[–]coinbaseisforfaggotsredditor for 16 days [スコア非表示]  (4子コメント)

or familiarize yourself with the gun and learn to use and carry it in a manner that makes it hard for for an attacker to take it from you, but only do this if you aren't a scared anit-gun lil' bitch.

What is an anit-gun? And why does using one make one scared?

[–]coinbaseisforfaggotsredditor for 16 days [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

You would have to ask Michael Bloomberg and ask him why hes such a scared bitch.

Having a gun greatly increases the risk of someone getting injured, and someone or other getting into legal trouble. So in many cases it's not worth it. If you're trained on how to use, and how to avoid using a gun, sure, otherwise I strongly recommend against.

This is an asinine bullshit comment. Go look at the violence rates in US states with open carry laws compared to others as one example. Guns don't = violence, people = violence. You think these massacres that happen would happen if the people getting massacred had their own guns.

Exactly don't you just cringe at these libtards?

Great suggestion, don't listen to these other guys' fud about how guns are too dangerous to carry.

fud

It's not fud if it's based on real statistics.

[–]PoCaMiQuredditor for 28 days [

Tell them to fuck off. You can't leave on fear because there is a 0.000000001% chance they are not bluffing. Virtually everything represents a higher risk to your family than this threat. So there is a higher mathematical probability that your house will be destroyed by a meteorite. Think rationally and tell them to fuck off.

lol the "twins" detail is so weird if this is a message they spam and you don't actually have twins.

It gives the message credibility when someone gets it who actually has twins.

Yep, I received a bunch of spooky messages on reddit a few months ago that arrived one by one and were so accurately targeted to me that I looked for a camera hidden in my room. This person seemed to know what was in my room, what activities I'd been to recently, etc. Each was from a different account.

Then one more arrived to the effect of "when did you sign up for welfare?" Fortunately I have never needed welfare. That's when I knew it was just random stuff sent to millions of redditors that was designed to look "targeted" to the few it actually fit. I checked the accounts that sent the messages the next day and they'd all been deleted/banned.

that's one reason to stay private on reddit or the web as much as you can - never use your real name in your reddit user name... I mean, the world is full of freaks. When you have a Facebook Account, posting family images it can happen, that those people have more informations about you - This is really a lesson for all people who think "we have nothing to hide". I can just advise to everybody - don't share your life with the world. All the best and good luck - really stop sharing your life with the world - it is something to protect - because it makes you vulnerable when somebody wants to play games. good luck!

That's why whenever somebody counters in an argument about the age of a Reddit account it's a worthless argument - Reddit accounts are easy to setup, and one really should setup many accounts, and often if the situation calls for it. So the fact that someone signed up yesterday doesn't mean their opinion holds less weight - they may value anonymity more than fake karma points.

anyone who sends you a message using the name hitmanxxxx is clearly a child. Maybe i should create the name BiggerBadderScarierHitmanxxxxxx and ask you for 2btc :)

It's a bluff but never use your name on the internet

This is a well-known scam, it happens with phone calls as well...they sometimes even have what sounds like a child in the background to make it sound authentic.

[–]NutraEfficientredditor for 2 months [

First off, do you have twins? If so then be as cautious as you can. If you don't then it's just a scheme.

[–]PoCaMiQuredditor for 28 days [

No, they know for a fact he has twins because it's so easy to know that and much more personal info just by checking his social media. So, in both cases, it's just a scam. You should not leave in fear or be "more cautious" because of that. Of course it's good to follow good security habits and be aware of your surroundings.

https://blockchain.info/address/1JGfXtMAyuNCXuvnmPXctKP2AG9aPME79N

This is info on that address, it hasn't been used yet

i see a balance of 0.00001 BTC (1 conf) from about 30 mins ago.

but i think it's a bullshit threat.

edit that could be a good thing: could track back where that balance came from.

Another note by the way: your account is pretty easy to doxx considering that you have your first and last name as your reddit account name. They can just search you on Facebook, Twitter,or other social media, and find your IP/location via a simple Skype search. So I would report this guy to the authorities via the site admins, and delete this account.

This seems like something they're sending out to tons of people hoping to find some that actually have twins. Contact the police immediately. (Also, nobody try to be a good samaritan by sending money to this address as it might be a distress scam.)

Internet threats aren't worth the electrons they're printed on

Sorry to hear about this. Threats like this can be pretty scary, no matter how empty they are. I run a bitcoin casino and have been given my fair share of death threats, even some with elaborate plots ("hi, I'm paid to kill you. But I don't really have any loyalty to my employer, so if you can beat his offer I'll let you live." type stuff.

Anyway, there's almost zero barrier to entry to sending stupid death threats (no ethics and a tor browser), so I really really wouldn't worry about it. Odds are it's a 14 year old kid thinking he can get rich or something.

I just sent some dust to that address, hopefully if the guy is stupid his wallet will automatically spend it and it might help de-anonymize him.

As a rule of thumb, I don't tell people the amount of bitcoin I have (not that it's much at this point). Nothing good can come of it.

Yeah, can report to LE. If it came in an email you can somewhat track the sending IP location and service at least as well.

IP address alone is not good enough to determine responsibility.

A good doxxer is going to use public or unsecured wifi anyways.

[–]dan_from_san_diego [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Call the cops. If you haven't already, then I suggest calling right now. If they do not send out a detective then contact the officer's superior when they are at your house and ask them why a threat to harm two children is not being handled as it outlined by most States, by having a detective investigate.

Unless you are in a 3rd world country. Then I would suggest that the person is unlikely to be a real threat.

I am sorry that someone would feel compelled to do this. I hope you do call the police, even if it just a scam.

It's a bluff. Cost to send msg is zero. Cost to follow up threat for not receiving $1,000 is very high. Crimes that take place in real world are a very different thing, much easier to track. Seriously everyone living in real world is vulnerable in some way, including idiot who sent msg. What are we going to do, have everyone try to intimidate everyone, and send money around?

As advised just be more private. Follow up with law enforcement in any case, be more vigilant, and if you're really uncomfortable use the 1K toward moving and even possibly a name change.

Contact police or alternativly, pay a 1 BTC reward to the 1st person who finds this asswipe and then go Mel Gibson (ransom styli) on his ass.....

[–]Bitcornicusredditor for 2 months [

If you're still using Facebook, Twitter, Linked In or whatever other unncessary stalker app/site, you really ought not to.

This Bitcoin extortion thing is only going to grow.

These Instagram cool guys posting how rich they are publically are going to be sad pandas in a few years when ransomware hits their devices without them knowing and collects potentially embarrassing and/or incriminating information....and then one day the attacker sends a text message:

"Send us 200BTC or we'll tell your wife about all your infidelities, she'll get the kids because she'll also learn about your porn habits, send unflattering conversations clandestinely recorded via mic or smartphone to the people that were discussed, and much much more!

After all, who needs 3 Ferraris, jackass?"

And no, Facebook privacy settings are not enough....delete your goddamn Facebook.

Please, do you have twins?

[–]PoCaMiQuredditor for 28 days [

Most likely he has, but that means nothing, anyone can know that (not even 'figure that out') by reading his social media.
