Null sec's safer than lowsec.

Relatively fewer players, big obvious political alliances, and the whole nine yards. When I used to play, the most dangerous parts of my run to Jita were crossing the borders of our territory and the run from .1 to .4.

Real players live in null sec.

Sure, but not for long.

I dunno about you, I played actively for 6 years or something. Only the first few months of that was outside of nullsec. If I would log in now, my only assets in empire is my trade-alt and his shit, and probably a few haulers.

A million words is about the length of The Lord Of The Rings. There had better be some riveting anecdotes in there.

Have you ever read any EVE online stories? Not only could you write a million words about EVE, I'm sure you could do that many times over.

Reading about EVE is often more fun than playing it.

Truths. On the plus side, I cultivated some pretty sweet excel skills playing that game.

How exactly does using Excel help with the game? I've been playing for a week and I still don't get why everyone says you need Excel to play this game.

Excel is great for working out maximum isk returns from ratting or mining, it's almost mandatory for moon harvesting, and it's also almost neccessary for keeping track of POS fuel (although I haven't played for a few years, I'm not sure if POSes still exist).

EVE has provided me with the most adrenaline infused hours of fun of my entire life. Easily. It's just that those adrenaline infused hours of fun are usually separated by weeks (or months!) of thumb twiddling and shitting up comms.

I was the same until just a few hours ago I was playing on cache when 2 members of my team were chilling having a laugh and playing well I joined in on the banter then they added me after the game, I hopped on their ts for another few games of cs turns out one of them is a LEM smurf he carried me a few games and we started talking about other games we play I told them I was quite good at league a game they felt they weren't too good at so I played a few flex games with them and we won every game all while having a great time. Just goes to show there are awesome people out there in whatever game you play and I'll be playing more with these guys in the future.

A half-nelson is when you are trying to wrestle or restrain someone and you put your arm under their arm and then bring it up around to the back of their head and then place your hand on the back of their neck, pushing their head forward.

A full-nelson is the same as a half-nelson, except you use both arms to wrestle/restrain your opponent.

A Father Nelson is when a Catholic Priest tries to sodomize you by using a full-nelson.

Last quarter in lecture I noticed that my teacher had Crusader Kings 2, Europa Universalis 4, and Stellaris on her desktop. [–]Sirspen 96

I found this to be the case with customers' computers I used to fix in my old computer repair job. Gentleman in is late 40s or early 50s brought in a laptop with Guild Wars 2, Killing Floor, Oblivion, and some other great games on it. He had no clue what I was talking about when I commented on it and it turns out the computer was given to him by his son. Aside from Solitaire, Bejewled, and similar games, this was always the case with customers who had games installed on their PCs.

Though it kinda makes sense. Most PC gamers are computer savvy enough to not go to an office supply store for computer repair.

EDIT: people have been asking for the paper. PM me your email and I'll send you a copy with my name removed.

Second Edit: I am concerned about plagiarism being plagiarized. Call me paranoid, but emails are now closed.

Dark Souls is so fucking rich it's ridiculous. Just the intro cinematic of the original Dark Souls still has me captivated. Which is a good thing, because I can't play for shit and thus don't advance.

Now I have the three Dark Souls games and Bloodborne in order to wonder at the artistry of the tutorial levels.

Its not so hard as you think it is.

It just is different. After years of gaming there ar certain pattterns in your mind. I mean all RPGs are more or less the same, same goes for FPS games etc etc. Just look at ubisoft titles how they all have the same game mechanics they just get swapped around which each game.

And than comes dark souls, who does things completely different. Its not hard because the game is so hard, its hard because you have never played anything like it and have to unlearn all the bullshit you learned from playing years of the same game mechanics.

Yeah, it actually kind of reminds me of old school Mario games in the sense of trial and error. Just in 3D and with a sword. And scary as fuck. And beautiful as hell.

I did something similar for agribusiness, wrote a paper on supply chain solutions for a commercial cannabis industry, which in Australia is a long way from ever happening. High Distinction.

Oh christ, 13 years later I've just realised the pun in my mark for that paper. Bloody stoners lol.

Edit: inb4 "not similar" - equally unexpected as a paper on video games, showing the teacher was happy to let the student work with what they engage with.

Christ as a fellow Aussie I'd love to know what kind of school you did that in, I get the feeling at mine it would've earned a talking to and having to re-do the assignment or take a lower grade.

Then again some of my teachers probably would've let me get away with it as long as it wasn't an exam or major assignment.

I once got the highest mark in the class for analysing a Zero Punctuation review of Minecraft, and she was a 50 year old woman who hated videogames and offensive humour.

[–]koalas_arent_bears 9 ポイント10 ポイント  (3子コメント)

What kind of school was it? A university type.

I'll admit I did well because I approached it from a "use the whole plant" perspective utilising fibre, seed and resin products from industrial plantings, the need for farmer based co-operatives with regards to fibre mills & logistics, and medical/recreational products as either raw or processed products. Covering all the bases in the supply chain was more important than the product itself (which was chosen to antagonise the lecturer, and failed)

I really enjoyed that bit, the rest of it I was doing the wrong degree, then I changed to another wrong degree and dropped out. Man, if I knew then what I know now...

My creative writing professor at the start of last semester asked what our biggest influences are as a way to get to know us. I mentioned star wars, eragon, destiny, and Dark Souls, and then we spent a good half of the semester talking about lore theories, different builds to play as, even played with each other a couple of times summoning each other. Coolest professor ive ever had.

I once met a 13 year old kid in my job and to make some small talk we talked about video games. He said he had beat Dark Souls easily, while I was still struggling with the tutorial level. I have ambivalent feelings towards the little bastard.

Just to make you feel a little better, remember what was playing videogames like as a kid/teen vs what it's like doing it as an adult with a job and responsibilities.

When I was little I would easily cave in and spend hours on end on a single game (if I managed to snuck out of my parents supervision), either alone or with friends, irregardless of how many times I died/failed. Spending entire afternoons grinding a difficult session was closer to the norm than to an exception, so "easily" definitely had a different meaning.

As an adult even 2 hours sessions are way rarer. I do think that a mentality shift is a factor, but the fact that just there isn't enough time is likely to be the main culprit.

Yeah, exactly this. Putting in 20 hours in any game, over the period of a couple months, is what it amounts to these days. So that's why nowadays my most rewarding experiences are short indie games with a meaningful story, like Dear Esther. Because I can actually finish them in two or three sessions, and soak in the full story.

Back in kid times I would grind the Treasure Ship in Super Mario 3 until my fingers bled, no problem. Or even as a student. Finishing games like MGS, FFVII, countless hours of Gran Turismo and FIFA, GTA VC / SA....

It really sucks for games like the Dark Soul series, because you can immediately sense the scope of the lore, and the general ambient and illustration is so fucking amazing, that one would love to see all of it. Not as much a problem with games like Skyrim, where the surroundings and tasks are more repetitive.

At least I know what I'll be doing in my retirement years.

I wonder if there's an influx of young teachers like that now. When I was in school in the 1990s and early 2000s, a teacher that played video games was pretty rare (to the point where I can't think of any examples from my own childhood), but I feel like I was among the first generation of mainstream gaming and that original audience kind of grew up with me (I'm saying that loosely as I know that there was a generation of gamers before me playing in Arcades and consoles like the Commodore 64 whereas my first system was the NES). I'm 31 and I feel like a lot of people in my age range, regardless of their profession, play video games at least occasionally if not regularly.

I wrote an extended essay back in '96 or so for English class and the subject was the culture and different meanings for words used in Quake SP and multiplayer. E.g. fragging meant to kill the opponent, giblets meant the severed body parts when hit with the rocket/grenade launcher etc. The teacher wasn't impressed and I got an E for it (you have to remember that online gaming was in it's infancy back then and the teacher probably never even heard of the internet). I laugh about it now but back then it was disheartening as hell.

I'm 35, in the judiciary, and play games pretty regularly. It's still a little hard though. A lot of my "peers" (who are much older) still think of video games as something that deadbeat kids do to waste time. I've found out that it's really better to not let on that my plans for the next three day weekend are to play RE7, or that the reason that I don't watch much TV isn't because I think it's banal, but rather because I'm too busy watching streamers instead. Kids today don't know how easy they'll have it when I'm their boss in 15 years and I totally think that taking a day off for the release of Final Fantasy 20 is fully understandable.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the "Sorry, class is cancelled due to personal emergency" sign on the door.

I've been playing Call of Cthulhu with a Oxford professor for a couple months now. I guess it's unsurprising that the academia is full of nerds.

I can't wait to hear whether he likes Fallout 4 or New Vegas more.

I don't think many people like Fallout 4 over NV.

So I played over a 1000 hours of NV. It's one of the few games I got massively into, to the point where I can remember where most of the stashes and unique items are off the top of my head. I can totally go north at the start of the game and make it work because I've just played so damn much.

And now for the really weird part. I freaking love FO4, I'm 300 hours in and still play it daily. I didn't pick it up until a few months after launch and already had everyone else's experience to go off of so I knew exactly what I was getting. It's not the same kind of game as NV. It's more of an FPS with an RPG tacked on whereas NV was the exact opposite.

If you don't try and make FO4 fit into an RPG shaped hole and accept it what it is then it's way easier to enjoy it.

Skyrim on the other hand is a hack and slash game pretending to be an RPG but it's combat is so very not good that I really can't stomach it for what it is.

With Skyrim, if the damage of close range attacks is cranked way up, I think it improves a great deal. If you can die in three hits, and most of the cannon fodder enemies can too, there is a decent amount of skill involved. I find it enjoyable enough.

In my first play throughs of Skyrim I hated the combat. On Legendary difficulty there was a lot of repetitious grinding involved, so I favored sneak attacks and often range weapons. But, if you use enchanting bonuses and smithing you can start dealing some serious damage. And if you use mods + Legendary difficulty, you can make it so that enemies are always able to inflict a decent amount of damage on you. Then combat becomes about footwork and timing.

But I loved Skyrim's universe, and very much enjoyed being a part of it. I wouldn't ever play the game just for the combat, even if it was tweaked just so.

Fallout 4 certainly has their best gameplay yet. I'm interested to see what the next Elder Scrolls will bring. I really hope they maintain the higher level of quality control and gameplay from Fallout 4, but revert back to the less scripted stories where you can give your character its own voice and personality. That is what truly makes Bethesda games special to me.

See, it's threads like this that make me really consider teaching as a career. Although I'll have a master's in biology (specializing in medical sciences) by the end of the semester, I could go into research, but I've always enjoyed the feeling of watching people learn something new and actually be excited about it. Actually getting on the students' level of socializing and being a teacher like this seems like it would be awesome in the long run.

I'm not a teacher but I'd imagine the students who are genuinely excited about it are in the minority

For a while I think I had some of them convinced that I was stampy

Definitely, while I was doing work experience in highschool at a kindergarten, I was told I am made of chocolate, why? Because I was eating a carrot, a carrot isn't a fruit or vegetable, and therefore is chocolate, and you are what you eat.

Kids are really weird

Best teacher ever.

I used to play Ragnarok Online during my high school period and at some point we had a new math teacher substitute. Not sure what happened, suddenly we were talking about MMORPG's and we found out that he was playing Ragnarok Online as well. From that point on, didn't mind going to math class anymore.
