In a nutshell, it was fairly harsh, but certainly not as harsh as the treaty of Brest-Litovsk which the Germans imposed upon the Russians just a year or so earlier.

Terms of the Versailles treaty were neither out of place (for the time period and context) nor humiliating overkill. Obviously Germany was 'hurt' by the financial payments and stuff, but it didn't force the Germans into starvation or anything.

Whether the Versailles treaty terms were 'smart' or a good thing to do can be endlessly debated, but the main takeaway for a TL;DR is that they were not disproportional, which is something that's often suggested by mild Boos and hardcore apologists alike.
