5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive and unwieldy, but comprehensive 16 Oct. 2014
By DAJ - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
An odd trend in scholarly publishing lately is to write "handbooks" that barely fit in your hand, because they cover as many aspects of the subject as possible. On the bright side, 800 pages might (conceivably) be worth $161, whereas many other scholarly books for that price contain far less information. Dry, certainly, but it does cover Roman Egypt from lots of angles: the state and the economy, various sites and geographical regions, ethnography and demography, religion, language, and artifacts. And each of those broad subjects gets at least five chapters. If you read it all, you will have a solid understanding of Roman Egypt and a very long list of further reading.
