Fuck. For months the_asshole brigaders have been telling us that Trump is oh so fucking pro-LGBT because of a stupid fucking photo op and that we have absolutely nothing to fear.

I really, really hope this rumor turns out to be false because vindication has never felt this awful.

AFAIK, being a part of the transition team is not an actual job, though I could be wrong. I imagine he's safe either way though. The Trump administration needs to be on good terms with him for the classic, "I have gay friends and thus I am not a homophobic asshole" defense.

Thank you. As a brown lgbt immigrant to the US, a reminder that we're not alone in this terror really does mean a lot after the week we've just had.

For real though, don't tell them you're coming to protest if you do cross the border. Lots of Canadians were denied entry on their way to the women's march. Thank you for your support, though. I hope this madness doesn't spill over to your country (more so than it already has).

Yes, they are well within their rights to refuse entry to people who are going to participate in protests, its part of the conditons of entry. So you're going shopping or to visit friends.

For clarification, we're not sure about the scope of the EO yet. NewCivilRightsMovement has a source that says it's "just" federal employees.

Either way, prepare yourselves for a fight.

I'm pretty sure that's all he can do with an executive order (i.e. the inverse of the Obama executive order). Any broader changes will have to go through congress, i.e. FADA, which is probably going to happen.

Traditionally, I believe you're correct. Trump may not know or care about this restriction...

You may be right. Which is a pretty scary thought.

But the one possible silver lining of it all is that at least it gives us a target to shoot down, i.e. if you associate Trump's name with legalizing discrimination against LGBT people then it will all but guarantee the passage of nation-wide protections against workplace discrimination in 4 years' time—provided that Trump doesn't burn the country down before then.

All of Trump's actions seem to revolve around undoing anything Obama did.

With that in mind, I would imagine he would be removing all anti-discrimination requirements for government contractors that Obama enacted.

I highly doubt it will be limited to just federal workers.

Its not just Obama, the Republican party's battle cry this year sure felt like "Undo Obama!!!"

Both parties have an agonizing stance of "undo what the other side did, at all costs."

Mitt Romney was way, way "less liberal" than Obama. For starters, Romney supported amending the Constitution to specifically forbid same-sex marriage.

And keep in mind that Mormonism, despite being presented with a smiling face, comes with one seriously fucked up, ultra-conformist worldview

So...why? What exactly is the purpose here? What are they trying to accomplish? What could their goals possibly be, save for legitimizing discrimination and homophobia? I'm genuinely asking here, what is this supposed to accomplish?

It's to legitimize discrimination and homophobia. That's the goal.

Some of this administration are true believers, like Senator Palpatine Mike Pence. Others don't give a shit about us, but need to pay back the coalition of homophobes, racists and sexists who brought them to power. They sure as hell aren't bringing any real jobs back, but they can bring back overt legal discrimination on the basis of orientation, race, religion, etc.

They promised to "make America great again". What do you think they meant by that? Among other things, they promised to create an America where where it's once again taken for granted that we aren't deserving of legal protections, and discrimination is explicitly condoned. Where we hide just to protect ourselves. Where no one is hesitant or ashamed to openly say they don't serve our kind.

This is a president whose SCOTUS nominee wants to make gay sex a crime again, a Vice President who wants to cut HIV funding and put it towards "ex-gay therapy", and whose chief strategist/chief of staff who claims trans women are sexual predators threatening little girls in the bathroom. And the people who gave these asshats power practically worship them for it.

Thanks for making me feel less crazy. Between the reality of this adminstration's actions and the constant cries to give them a chance, they're not that homophobic, not really, I feel like I'm being gaslit. It's baffling and horrifying in equal measure that there are people who sing their praises for things like this.

Any claim that they're not homophobic, racist, sexist, xenophobic, etc., is absolutely gaslighting. And they're going to get more and more overt and aggressive about it as time goes on and they consolidate power.

Some people will believe anything. Some people will believe anything they are told if it validates some beliefs they hold that might not be so good. Some people want the right to be racist, bigoted, close minded, and hateful, with zero repercussions. Some people are simply afraid of..... differences? Change? Things they don't understand? Some people are uneducated on the consequences of BS like DA,DT and DOMA and the atrocious 'bathroom bills'. Some people's 'social bubble' tells them scare stories about 'the others' be it gays, trans, immigrants, Muslims, Democrats, what have you.

So yeah, in most people I'd say its a lack of critical thinking/blind faith or outright 'fuck you' of some sort. And since everybody wants to believe they themselves are good people, well, sometimes you have to pretend... Like Nazi Germany, the Patriot Act, and Trumpism.

http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-reasons-trumps-rise-that-no-one-talks-about/ The title isn't great, but the article really is. I think it's relevant.

To make the far right evangelical base happy so they turn out in 2018.

The way the presidency's going, everyone is going to rise in a protest against him. Women are already marching, the Muslim ban has caused protests, scientists are planning their own movement too. If he goes through with this EO, so will LGBTQ. The real question now is who's next to rise?

[–]AmaraRavenclawBisexual Trans Girl 15

And all the while he'll keep saying that the approval ratings are rigged, that it's just a vocal minority opposing him, and that he totally won the popular vote if not for the millions of fraudulent votes. I really think he's incapable of recognizing how yugely unpopular he is.

Despots should be disposed of however possible, and so far, Trump's only shown himself as a despot.

He's inciting people to protest so virulently that he can label them as rioters and anarchists and then crack down on civil liberties. Bye bye, first amendment. Bye bye, second amendment. Bye bye, fourth amendment. It also doubles to out and identify possible dissidents so that later you can crack down and imprison them. These are typical maneuvers of somebody trying to install themselves as a dictator, which Trump absolutely intends to do. Why do you think he's trying to dissolve the Secret Service? Because those folks would put country ahead of the president if the president did something like that. Hitler did the same thing with the SS because the SA was untrustworthy and could feasibly betray him. Many oher dictators have done the same.

This country was literally built on institutional genocide, racism, homophobia, sexism, and classism. Nazi Germany literally based their eugenics policies on those of the United States, and based their concentration camps on the plantation and Indian reservation system. Trump is this country's values. The problem is the whole damn system is rotten, and has been since the very start.

I suspect there will be widespread protests every week until he either starts doing his fucking job (which is to carry out the will of the people, not whatever Steve bannon wants) or is removed from office.

Hey, all those people who have been consistently at the bottom of the comments section here for the past year, minimized? Yeah, you can easily join us back up here in the not-downvoted-to-oblivion section if you're just civil enough to admit you were wrong. We told you over and over again and you refused to listen but if you're genuinely folks here will forgive you because the LGBTQ community knows what its like to be disowned and wishes to avoid that if possible. Mistakes happen.

Oh, and before anybody comes at me with "but muslims!" let me remind you that while Trump has stated a willingness to allow christian refugees from Syria to enter the United States he has made no such exception for LGBTQ refugees in Syria that are also fleeing ISIS. If he's willing to make an exception for christian Syrians because they're being persecuted why wouldn't he make a similar exception for a group in the same area that is fleeing the same persecution from the same would-be persecutors? Its because he doesn't care about us and will sell us out the moment it becomes convenient.

Just remember; we might have a few bad years coming. But we just had some really good years. Any move Trump makes is only temporary. It is impermanent. And then we'll see good times again around the corner. Don't give up hope, and don't fall for the trap of hating one another. Be strong, be united, and we shall overcome.
