Superman is an anchor baby.

He wasn't born in America.

And his parents died when the planet blew up. It's just a joke.

Just another foreign baby adopted by coastal elites.

I mean, I usually see the humor in things like this, but it's not a pun, technically or grammatically accurate, or anything like that. If you had said something about baby Superman being able to stop a ship from moving, bam, anchor baby makes sense, everybody laughs. You just didn't take it far enough. It's ok, try again soon! Don't give up!

This analogy actually applies pretty neatly to modern Superman. "He brought the war to us"

TBF most of the Kryptonians that humans have met are complete dickheads.

Half the bloody Clark Kents are Nazis or psychos or rabbits.

He has been around for a really long time. He was created in 1982.

In the current arc of Superman, he has had his powers stolen and been turned into a regular bunny rabbit.

Funny, author John Byrne actually hated the fact that Superman is technically not an American so when he got the chance to rewrite the character's origin in his influential The Man of Steel story (the uh, comic not the movie) he added this little tidbit

The series includes the embryonic Kal-El rocketing away from the destruction of Krypton and his birth upon landing in Kansas when he emerged from the artificial womb

Retconning it so that he is born on US soil, making him a legitimate American born in America. This is of course, taken from its Wikipedia* page but you can look up the comic itself and confirm it for yourself. What's even crazier is that the reason he hates Superman not being a real American is that he won't be able to run for President. I'm not kidding.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_of_Steel_(comics)

EDIT:

Also yes, Superman being eligible to run for president does become a plot point for a story arc in an event.

That's completely silly but what makes it even sillier is theasy fact that he would've been able to become president either way.

He crash landed here as a baby, everyone that met him except the Clarks would think he was born here, if they manage to get him a birth certificate, which I believe they did, he can run, all just the same without actually needing to be born here.

In fact any actual legal problems that stopped him before, like maybe the difficulty of getting a birth certificate, would still stop him after the change

If we're going by strict legality, I'm not sure that a non-human could be a citizen, much less become the President. It doesn't matter where he was born.

i really liked Super man: Red Son, since it has the alternate view of what would happen if Kal-El landed in Ukraine instead of Kansas

That's because when that PSA was in the comic book, the only two religions that existed was Christianity and Judaism. True fact.

Nah at that time they may have considered Catholicism, Lutherianism, Judaism, Baptism, ... different religions that could've fought each other :p

Oh yeah, totally! My parents were both raised Catholic. When they got married they had some kind of falling out with the church and converted to Baptists. For some members of the family, you'd think they joined up with Manson.

It's as if the Manhattan Project would have ended up producing a better propaganda printing press.

[–]Micp 6

I remember hearing that the creators felt like it wouldn't make sense to show him fighting in the war because it would not make sense that the war wasn't won immediately and it would detract from the effort of the actual fighting soldiers and be disrespectful.

As such they had a story where Clark Kent was drafted but during the eye test of the medical examination he accidentally used his x-ray vision and read a different test chart behind the one he was supposed to read so he was found unfit for duty.

So Superman decided that since the American army was strong enough to win the war without him he would dedicate himself to fighting spies and saving lives on the homefront.

Interesting! I haven't actually, not American. I didn't even know there was anything more to it than the huddled masses quote that's recited on TV all the time.

"The New Colossus" is a sonnet that American poet Emma Lazarus wrote in 1883. It was at the time simply an attempt to raise money for the base that the great statue sits atop. The sonnet grows in popularity whenever immigration is in politics.

It was written specifically because Emma Lazarus was told that the statue would be important to immigrants. She refused to donate the poem before that. So someone else conceived of the statue having that purpose as well. You would have to be blind to think this isn't a part of American identity.
