Jose: "We deserved to win. The first half wasn't very good but we managed to lead 1-0 when we needed to play better. We knew they would be organised and play with aggression, would be very compact, and to break that down we needed to change a few things. The second half was much better. We deserved to win, the job is done and we are in the last 16. Overall I am happy with what we did."

Joyce: "The game plan was working, so we are disappointed to lose. We had good chances, the best chances really, certainly up to half-time.The timing of the first goal was unfortunate, then straight after the break we concede another poor goal. It was bread-and-butter stuff - we deal with those balls week in week out, two headers at the back post. After that you can forget about the game; we were just chasing and were opening up. The only emotion is disappointment.

We play Hull again on Wednesday and with City having a potentially tricky away fixture at West Ham (you never really know how they'll play) and Liverpool playing Chelsea, we have an opportunity to try to make up more ground on the teams above us. I don't expect Arsenal or Spurs (Watford and Sunderland) to have too much trouble with their fixtures though.

Hull have seen a mini-upsurge in form recently though under their new manager (beating us, Bournemouth and Swansea) and they may come to us with some new found confidence (although they were just tanked 4-1 by Fulham in the cup and are selling some big starters too).

With our match sandwiched inbetween two Thursday night games against St.Etienne, a kind home game would be the preference I imagine! I wouldn't mind a game against Blackburn Rovers at home, been a while since we've played them (getting on 5 years) and I've always loved beating them after that 94/95 season when they won the league by a point with Cantona on the sidelines after his little incident at Selhurst Park.

Some Thoughts

  • A game of two halves. We played ok in the first half at times (the Mkhi chance at the back post comes to mind after good work by Martial and TFM) but largely I thought we were more like the United of last season (i.e. half-time we had 71% possession, 3 shots). Credit to Wigan though, they kept their shape really well throughout that first half and made it very difficult for us to break them down with the goal coming from a mismatch at the back post. Because of that goal, Wigan had to start to come out more and the second half opened up. They started to tire, space started to become more apparent and Martial (far more effective on the left in the second half), Mkhi and Mata started to really enjoy themselves. The third goal was a beautiful counter-attack and was great to see us scoring one like that (simply have the pacey players to do so was great).

  • I thought Smalling looked nervy still - he made a few good tackles and grabbed his goal but I doubt that kind of performance will really cement his place in the side under Mourinho. Shaw had some good moments too going forwards and on the ball looked comfortable. Hopefully he continues to get game time under his belt and starts to rediscover his defensive form because he's definitely some way away from how he was but I'm optimistic he can get back there.

  • Good to see debuts handed to Pereira and Tuanzebe. The latter looks pretty green (to be expected) and not a natural right back but, botched clearance aside, didn't do much wrong. Pereira had some routine saves to make but not too much to do. Was also good to see TFM getting some minutes in at RB and I thought he had another good game for us. Some poor touches going forwards but his cross for Mkhi in the first half was terrific. I think he really could be a fantastic right back if he wants to become one because he has all the right attributes for it.

  • Whilst not the most difficult opponents we could face, we showed why having such a deep squad is an advantage. Being able to rotate out players like Pogba, Ibra, Jones, De Gea, Carrick etc and being able to bring in Mata, Rooney, Smalling, Romero, Schweinsteiger is a frankly ridiculous squad. Players like Fellaini and Schweinsteiger are terrific players to have to be able to rotate in and allow breaks for others (like Carrick) and with four competitions left to fight in, to be able to have such high calibre rotation options is an invaluable thing.

  • Finally Herrera's shot at the end means I'm the 30,000th person to say this; What has happened to his shooting this season?

This team has 2 performance levels. Really shit, with seemingly no idea how to score, almost LVG-like, boring play, or free-flowing, dangerous at almost every attack, find-a-way United like our team of old. Never really seems to be an in-between.

Perfectly summarized in the two halves. 1st bad. 2nd good. Thankfully our shit performance was against a vastly weaker side so we weren't punished.

Agree with this. We've largely been a slow starter this season too and that's something we need to change really.

I'm just glad that we always have a goal in us. You have to go back to October for the last time we didn't score a goal. Even when we're playing like shit, like the first half, we can get a goal from somewhere.

I want Chelsea to win both - title is out of our reach now, but Arsenal and Liverpool both losing would be a huge boost to our top 4 chances.

Yeah I don't see it happening. I'd rather gun for second or third and win Europa, FA and the EFL. I'd consider that a successful season

I hate Chelsea but I think we need to be realistic about our chances. The title is as good as gone and out of Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal or Chelsea, I rather the latter wins it.

We need the other 4 teams challenging for the top 4 to be dropping points as much as possible.

I genuinely have no idea what to do with Chris Smalling. I like him, thought he was easily our best defender last year and one of the best in the league. I still think he is a good defender and a lot of people are writing him off, or have been doing so over the last few months, too early.

I think he's a good player, but I really think he needs to use him brain more. His technical ability on the ball is so poor. The amount of times the ball comes to him when he has time to take it down and recycle it, and ends up clearing it first time away. That's ok at a lower level but at the top we really shouldn't be gifting possession back to teams so cheaply. Although not a mistake, sometimes goals can be conceded that trace back to that loss of possession. The very best teams conceded less partly by starving out those seeds before they develop into anything at all.

I also appreciate what he's trying to do when he drives forward carrying the ball into midfield, but I wish he could either make his mind up sooner and pick out someone within 10 yards once he runs out of ideas, or learn to pick out a good forward pass. It's horrible watching him gallop forward like a majestic stallion, only to remember he's not one, then panic. You can see the "oh shit" in his eyes as the space he's in starts to close like a net around him and he either starts losing control of the ball and slides in to knick it away to someone else or turns back and runs backwards just as fast as he came forward. Once he hits that "point" he needs to make up his mind and get rid of the ball quicker. Or not advance at all and leave it to Rojo.

I like him as a player apart from that, he's a good defender. But long term I just don't see what he can do that Bailly can't. Bailly seems to be just as good if not better defensively while also being very comfortable on the ball. The other options for CB are all much more comfortable on the ball too. Really don't envy Mourinho having to deal with that one.

If Wigan had nicked a goal before half time it would have been a very different game. We couldn't handle the physicality and niggly little scraps. Fella excels in that area but I think he has a bad rep and the ref reaches for a card earlier than he might for another player.

Second half shows how confidence based our success is. Once a team comes out to play against us we look a lot better. Sitting back is as good a tactic as any for a team seeking a point though and we really need to get better at breaking deep lying teams down and finishing our chances.

I hope we keep Fellaini, he isn't a starter every week, he'll never play some wonderful killer ball but against certain teams he can unlock their defences.
Hes come up with some big moments in cups (West Ham goal, semi final goal, final assist and his league cup goal vs Hull proved to be crucial) and when hes played correctly it is very, very hard to stop him - I can't think of a fullback that can compete aerially with him at the back post.

I loved watching Liverpool lose again this weekend and its precisely because they had no other plan than to try to play intricately through 11 men in their own penalty area. So I'm thankful for our plan B or it might've been the same frustration for us.

The first half was god awful. Didn't look like we had a plan or any coherent movements at all.

I fell asleep watching the second half so I can't really remember much but judging from the comments we did quite well.

Martial really looks so much better on the left that it shouldn't even be up for debate where he should play. He immediately offers us a big threat down the wings and he doesn't even need to cross or beat a man for us to get that extra space.
