What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

About this project

Hi there! Wynsome Studios is excited to introduce this new laptop stand launched as part of Kickstarter's 'make/100' initiative. This folding stand, designed specifically for small laptops, is incredibly small, light and thin. Because it is 3D printed, the stand is personalizable and also customizable to the length of your small (screen size 13" and below) laptop. 

As part of the Kickstart 'make/100' initiative, we will be making 100 launch limited editions of the stand. Please read on to learn more!

Origin of the design:

Emily, the founder of Wynsome Studios, first designed this stand for her own personal use when she realized she needed to start consistently using a laptop stand after suffering from neck/shoulder issues from long hours spent doing laptop-based work (and some not exactly perfectly executed yoga inversions)...

Living in a tiny city apartment, with a kitchen table doubling as an office desk, traveling frequently, and also working from coffee shops, co-working spaces and hotel rooms, Emily needed a laptop stand that was small, light and folded as compactly as possible.  

As a CAD designer and 3D printing enthusiast, Emily realized that she could design such a stand that would fold completely flat and then unfold and quickly fit together to form a stand. The key to the design was three interlocking components - made possible by using SLS (selective laser sintering) 3D printing manufacturing.  

From Emily's initial design concept, we have worked through many iterations of the stand to reach this version available on Kickstarter - focussing on maximizing strength and stability and minimizing weight, folded thickness and manufacturing cost.

Benefits and key features:

We know there are other laptop stands / risers out there, but if you have a small, lightweight laptop, we feel that there are a number of features that sets Wynsome Studios' stand apart! 

The key features of the stand are:

  • Customizable length - the length of the stand is adjusted to the length of your laptop prior to manufacture. This means that you aren't carrying around more stand than you need for your laptop, and when folded, the stand fits within the length x width profile of your laptop
  • Folds flat to 5mm (less than 1/4") - this, combined with the customizable length, means that the stand can be stored in a drawer or slipped in a laptop bag or pouch along with your laptop, with very little additional space required
  • Weighs less than 2oz (60g) - with the exact weight of your stand depending on the length of your laptop. The stand's interlocking nylon components provide strength and stability with no weighty hinges or additional support structure needed to make it work 
  • Adjustable bottom tabs - move up and down to hold the laptop firmly in place. When pushed down, the bottom tabs have an incredibly low profile, so they fit most thin laptops and don't get in the way of your hands accessing the laptop's keyboard and trackpad
  • Holds a laptop screen 4.5" (c. 11.4cm) above a desk or other solid surface, at an open angle of c.114 degrees - this, along with the low profile of the bottom tabs, allows the laptop on the stand to be used with or without an external keyboard and / or mouse, depending on what feels most comfortable to you
  • Available in nine colors - blue, purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, black and white
  • Personalizable - Add your name, initials, company name, etc. 

Things to keep in mind:

  • We will adjust the stand length to match the length of your laptop prior to manufacture. This means that we will need your laptop length (measured from the front to the back of the bottom part of your laptop) when you place your order
  • Any personalization text must be kept 'clean' - eg no profanity
  • This design is patent pending (as at Jan '17)

The stand is not designed for:

  • Larger laptops (such as laptops with 15" or 17" screen sizes). This is mainly due to manufacturing size restrictions
  • "Chunky" laptops, in other words laptops that have a bottom thickness greater than 0.6 inches / 1.5cm. This is due to the size of the bottom tabs. If the bottom half of your laptop is thicker than this, please email us (3dlaptopstand@wynsomestudios.com) to discuss prior to ordering
  • Laptops with limited open angles. Your laptop needs to open approximately 115 degrees for the screen to be viewed comfortably while sitting on the stand (25 degrees past a 90 degree right angle). Many newer laptops have very wide open angles, but if your laptop does not open much wider than 90 degrees please email us (3dlaptopstand@wynsomestudios.com) to discuss prior to ordering

Risks and challenges

Wynsome Studios has designed and tested many iterations of the stand to reach this version available on Kickstarter. One of the benefits of 3D printing manufacturing is that making one unit of a product is essentially the same as making multiple - meaning we are highly confident that our prototypes seen photographed / demonstrated above can be replicated for backers.

One of the aspects of the stand that we are excited about is the ability to customized the length of the stand based on an individual backer's laptop stand length. So we will obviously need backer input on laptop length, which we will then use to adjust the stand length prior to manufacture.

    The stand will be customized for the length of your small laptop (13" screen size and below).

    Please let us know:
    - The type and length of your laptop. For example, "MacBook Air 13", 9 inch length". We measure length from the front to the back of the bottom part of your laptop
    - Color choice (blue, purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, black, white)
    - any personalization requests (30 character max, no profanity please)

    Each stand will be marked with a unique number out of 100 to commemorate the Kickstarter make/100 launch

    Stands will be shipped via the USPS

    The stand is not designed for:

    * Larger laptops (such as laptops with 15" or 17" screen sizes)
