Announcement: Regarding the closing of Sli.mg and other image hosting options going forwardRIP SLI.MG :( (self.The_Donald)

Hey centipedes!

You've probably noticed that our favorite image hosting site, Sli.mg has pretty much died. At first we thought that maybe they were just having technical issues, but as the days turned into weeks of no service, and emails were bounced back, and the creators' Reddit accounts became deleted, we realized that Sli.mg is probably no longer.

In the wake of this, we have received a lot of modmail messages asking what we are going to do going forward with image hosting options.

You might have noticed that we have lifted our Imgur restriction. We will no longer block links to this host.

We are also looking to expand our approved hosts too, so if you like an image host that we currently block, please send us a modmail and let us know.

We also have one other option that /u/zettapede has generously set up as a solution for image hosting while we try to figure out what to do going forward. He has opened MAGAimg.net which is an image host he is running out of his own pocket, ad-free for as long as he can absorb hosting costs. (He has committed funds to host it for the next three years.) Like Sli.mg, exif and metadata are removed from uploads.

(Zetta is going to be around in the comments of this post to answer any questions about this hosting solution that you guys might have.)

So hopefully this helps remedy some of our image hosting issues now that Sli.mg has died. Feel free to add other suggestions in the comments here!

TL;DR: Sli.mg is dead, we have lifted the ban on Imgur posts, we have another option, MAGAimg, if you so choose, and if you have any other suggestions for good hosting sites, please let us know!

Archive.org has their wayback machine, but it has always been "hit or miss" for me.

In much the same vein as slimg, archive.is has been invaluable and would sorely be missed. There is a small donation page which they appear to never hit. I would imagine a lot of important things are already been mirrored, so the speed with which content could be archived would be much quicker. Any volunteers?

              u/zettapede I think this is a really good time to try and draw the groups attention to the idea of blockchain file hosting, for a few reasons
              1. it addresses the question above - the ability to send tips to the users who go the extra mile to help keep the community informed and able to red pill
              2. its permanent and depends on no other businesses operations or server fees getting paid - considering how many users meme caches were probably lists of sli.mg links, thats a lot of lost red pills (and time and effort) - lets not let that keep happening
              3. i know some of the founders of one approach to blockchain media publishing, alexandria, and i also know that some of their developers are very based DT supporters as well and probably subscribers here, so if there is interest in a super easy to use image publishing tool, ill bet they'd whip one up in a weekend.

Sites like Sli.mg and Voat.co are rare. I'm wondering if we can use sites like Gab.ai to host images. It would be a great way to grow Gab and make it a viable competitor to Twitter. They have a very strong no censorship policy and they are already right leaning so we don't have to worry as much about SJWs trying to derail the project. Gab can use this opportunity to make them profitable with things like ads or by attracting investors thus making sure that the economics of this works out.

                                          This is really odd. You can't even do a whois lookup on the site. It just fails. Very odd that the site is still up as well, but just doesn't work.

                                          The only thing from the page source is the creator is "Kataclizm", but I can't find anything else out about them.

                                          Note that if you want to worry, when you uploaded images they appeared in the upload window with the completed pathname including on a mac your "account name" which is the full name of the user for 99.99% of user. Meaning that of course all "anonymous images" could have captured the name of the poster.
