They got the scams pretty bad over there, especially MMM and Onecoin.

Both of those are telling ppl to buy in with bitcoin, but at least after they're scammed and left with nothing, they have learned about bitcoin.

MMM for South Africa. It's still unknown to most, but it's wildly popular in the poor areas...

The MMM ponzi just crashed in Nigeria.

Do not underestimate the power of Lagos. If they can purge themselves of the shackles of local politicians it could become a powerful crypto center.

Remember this is 2017, not 1997. Cities that were once financial centers are becoming peripheral and vice versa in the new crypto world.

Nigeria floated its currency (removed peg to the $) in July and since then it has lost alot of its value so Nigerians are scrambling to hold their wealth in any currency but Naira. There is a well functoning black market, currently 500 Naira buys $1 on the black market. In June 2016 the official rate was 200 Naira to $1 so its lost about 60% of its value since then, hence wanting to not hold Naira.

Interesting. Where did you find info. on the black market rate? Is there a site that publishes it?

Official rate is currently $1 = NGN 317.5

AbokiFX

Pretty detailed information about Black market, ATM, bank and official exchange rates. Some of the info is crowdsourced but overall it's pretty accurate.

yeah thats pretty accurate, its alls supply / demand though so sometimes on the same day different FX guys have totally different rates and its not very liquid.

I am a prince in Nigeria and I recently came across my father's wallet after he passed away. I need to help decrypting it. I found a hacker that can break into it but he wants 1 bitcoin before he will touch it. If you could just send me 1 bitcoin at the following address I will send you 100 bitcoins once the wallet is decrypted. He has over 6,000 bitcoins in his wallet, so with just a little help I can easily pay you back.

Please send your bitcoins to: 8675309YOUAREASUCKER

I just tried to send but it says that address is not valid.

Good spot.

LocalBitcoins.com has more unique visitors from Nigeria than any other country according to Alexa.com. So does Bitcoin.com Source: Blocklink.info

But the MMM ponzi is also really active in Nigeria.

There is probably a relationship between those trends.

Nigerian here.

The popular MMM Ponzi scheme recently switched it's medium for remittances to bitcoin in a bid to counter the SEC's efforts to stop it.

Banks are under orders to stall or cancel any transactions to known MMM accounts or with MMM related descriptions.

Personally I'm a bit torn. On the plus side it shows the waning influence of government over-reach regarding how we spend our own money. On the other hand, its still just a ridiculous amount of people (estimated 3 million) getting scammed.

Lbtcstats.com shows them as huge buyers, surprisingly higher than many larger economies. I was surprised by Russia and Malaysia too.

Click on the Nigeria chart. It's so much higher than it was in 2013 at the peak.

Knowing Nigeria, probably inflation.
