There is some confusion concerning when Walter Crickmer and Jimmy Porter were manager. Dates are hard to come by, but this article and these results suggest Jimmy Porter was in charge for the 1938/39 season. There is also a Spectator article from 1957, which says that Matt Busby is a welcome escape from Jimmy Porter. There was a character named Jimmy Porter in a play from the period, so the author of the Spectator article may have used this reference cleverly, to allude to both this character and the former Manchester United manager. Crickmer was primarily club secretary and never officially held the title of Manager of Manchester United, so it's most likely he filled in between appointments.

Jimmy Murphy was caretaker manager until the end of the season whilst Matt Busby recovered from his injuries in the Munich air disaster.

The Friday 10th April 1931 issues of the Hull Daily Mail, Western Daily Press and Western Morning News report Bamlett's departure and replacement with Crickmer. The 6th April issue of the Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser states that United were relegated after their game against Sunderland on 4th April, so we have taken this to be Bamlett's last game.

The 2nd April 1927 edition of the Dundee Courier states that Herbert Bamlett had been appointed manager with effect from April the 5th.

The 15th July 1932 edition of the Evening Telegraph states that Scott Duncan will be manager with effect from the 1st August.

The 9th October 1926 edition of the Nottingham Evening Post states that Hilditch was made manager the previous day.
