I mean, really, what leverage does Mexico have here. We can crush them in just about any aspect. The thing is, the wall will hurt the cartels, and that will actually help the people of Mexico. You think Chicago is bad, try Tijuana. Mexico has a government that has outright failed to help its people. The wall is coming, whether Mexico's leadership likes it or not.

Mexico has a government that can't help their people. An example of a country that is so overrun with cartels and other gangs there is no hope for them to regain control.

So much this! People think a man with a 12% approval rating is "making a stand?" This guy is a fucking joke. He leads a country that has little leverage ANYWHERE on the world stage. The bullshit that is upvoted on /r/news, /r/politics and /r/worldnews as it pertains to this story astonished me. They're saying it's a "lose lose for America too." How? How is not meeting with a leader of a country whose OWN PEOPLE don't even respect him a "bad thing?" I say build the wall, establish our hiders like every other first world country.

It isn't, its a Classical Liberal stance

That is their problem, they can't I don't think.

I have not seen their balance sheet, but I would almost bet that the entire Mexican economy is afloat by cartel money selling drugs in USA and illegal workers sending money back. Both of which a wall and enforcement of immigration laws will drastically curtail.

Two major things the wall would accomplish is weakening the cartels and stopping the flow of border-crossing illegals coming into the US to leech off our economy and send money back home.

It's a win for both sides unless you financially benefit from the leeching. Or in the Democrat's case, politically benefit.

At the same time, many Mexican families are subsidized by the American economy as their own country is an economic failure. And it's not going to get better when Trump brings the jobs back.

This is going to be an excellent 4 and hopefully 8 years for America. And for the third world that can no longer exploit our success, tough shit.

This is obvious saber rattling to make the Wall and border security a matter of Mexican national pride so that Nieto can lift his sagging poll numbers. He wants to be able to shake his fist at Yanqui.

Poor move. If he had been able to negotiate against the wall, he would have been a national hero. Granted, the chances of him being able to do that were poor, but he might have at least raised his own approval ratings by trying. As it stands, what is he going to say to his people- that the wall was built, and he backed down? Vicente Fox has more fortitude than this guy, and he's not even President anymore.

Didn't Trump tell Nieto not to come if he wasn't willing to pay for the wall? Mexico has made it very clear again and again that they're not going to pay for the wall. Trump really has to blame himself for this cancellation.

It isn't Trump's game to lose. By refusing to come, Nieto is certainly sending a message, but that message would be all the more powerful if he showed up willing to fight. From a Mexican perspective, not paying for the wall should only be a part of the equation. The wall represents a symbolic slap in the face; the suggestion to the whole world that they aren't able to take care of their own problems. Their end game, and as such that of President Nieto, should be to prevent the wall from going up to begin with.

Trump said Mexico should cancel the meeting if they aren't willing to pay for the wall. Makes you wonder how Trump's going to convince them if he doesn't want to talk to them.

President Nieto is just doing what Trump asked, to be brutally honest.

No, President Nieto is turning the Wall into a matter of national honor in order to rally Mexicans behind him to cover up his sagging poll numbers.
