      Extremely disappointing!

The campaign ‘Risks and challenges’ stated:

“We are not selling an idea, our boards have been used all around the world. The facility is up and running and our suppliers are locked in and are reliable.”

…they did note “…there may also be issues that arise during manufacturing but currently we cannot foresee anything that would jeopardise the project.”

They reassured potential investors… “Our team is made up of experts in their respective fields who are prepared to meet any challenge.”

      Under Warranty they stated:

“We've spent immense amount of time and effort selecting our materials and perfecting our production methods.”

“…we are proud to offer the best warranty in the industry”

After all of the support and understanding for what, on its merits, should have been a great project, the latest update raises more questions than it answers.

#Update4, Fully funded after 48hrs…the fastest funded paddle board project on Kickstarter ever!

It is as elusive as the ‘ethical’ founders of this project, and is another example of their lack of ownership and inability to show any form of respect for their backers!

Did they have to liquidate Origin Paddleboards (SUP Switzerland GmbH) or have they simply ceased trading?

If they have had to liquidate, who is the liquidator?

Previous updates indicated that the primary issue related to the quality of materials (exacerbated by inexperienced employees #Update 14/ 18). If this is the case surely there is a case to recover costs from the supplier?

Prior to my backing of the project I had a skype conversation, where it was impressed upon me, that as a potential reseller of Origin Paddleboards, customer service was of the utmost importance to them.

Assured by their approach and ethics, I backed this project for 10 boards.

I have been exceptionally understanding and supportive of Neal and Neil. While frustrated by the delays, I appreciated that we do not live in a perfect world, and had believed that they would overcome the challenges they where facing.

Neal did manage to get 1 board to me in time to use it for the 11 City Tour in September.

While that board was missing a handle and was shipped from Switzerland (incurring import duties and taxes), I was appreciative of the fact that I had an ‘eco-board’ to use on the tour.

#so much for ‘All product will be shipped from within the European Union for all European backers with all duties paid’ (The UK has not left the EU yet)

Unfortunately a short while later this board (the only one I did receive) burst!

I sent pictures and requested a call to discuss, chased on multiple occasions but they have made no effort to contact me, make any enquiry or comment on what had actually happened.

#so much for ‘the highest possible standards’

I am further fascinated to note that according to his linkedin profile Neal actually left Origin Paddleboards in October 2016?

      #missed that update

Not sure I’m quiet ready to let this one go!

      Clarification, specification, proofs!

How many boards from the campain were sent?
How many boards from outside the campain were made & sent?
What allocation formula did you use to mark out the outside campaign boards (about 80) from the kicksater boards regarding the costs?
Why is a big brand like Mistral able to keep on producing with the same material that you claim to be faulty?
In how far differs the material problem from the long term known material tolerances that your former producer was even awarded for: http://iaa.ifai.com/projects/isup-inflatable-stand-up-paddleboards/ ?
Since the twisting material is a much bigger problem with the long and narrow boards, why didn‘t you offer to build 10‘6ers for us?
What happend to the about 13 finished or almost finished board on the pics we took when we last visited? Prototypes? - Who finishes a board with second rail layer, kevlar reenfrocements and deckpad including attachments just for a try-out?
Please provide proof for the glue mixture fail - pics, comunication with backers or insurrance etc...
Please provide proof for the intense communication with the material provider (who is it?) pics from the over 60 prototypes etc... - or any other proof of your activities from August 2016 to January 2017?
The Hey-Tex material manager was not informed about extraordinary material failures so who did you correspond with?

A Kickstarter project sure brings some risk along, but you Neil Parmenter assured to have all problems solved before the project started - you stated that some unlucky incidents appeard but you didn‘t prove them yet... - that a soulful project has to end this way is sad enough and some people are losing quite a bit of money, so pretty please do everthing to eliminate the doubts and bad taste that were caused from your reactive and unopen communication!

This material issue you talk of, should not have been an issue after our backing. we were backing production not solving problems. I cant get my head around this. Surely you should have had this sorted before getting us to pay for crap materials?

      @velijoze to answer your questions...
      - what are we doing... we're continually testing new material and feeding back data to the manufacturer of the drop stitch material to resolve the problem. We are totally reliant on them resolving the issue.
      - what is the manufacturers take on this... we presume you mean the manufacturer of the drop stitch? Through our tireless work, testing and providing detailed feedback and data, they now know what the problem is and they are working hard to fix the issue. They believe they will get there and we are moving closer to a solution, but it is a complex problem which requires a complex solution. No one more than us wishes it was an easy solution, but frustratingly that isn't the case.
      - what are our plans for the future... to deliver the KS board by spring 2017. That is our current timeframe and nothing so far in the resolution process has led us to think we won't be able to do so. IF that changes, we will provide an update, but in the meantime, we have explained in detail as much as we can. We are still working on it, every day, so there is nothing else to update.

I hope that answers your questions. We do have a question for you however; we'd be really interested to know which SUP makers and distributors you've been talking to, as we're fairly sure the distributors won't have a clue how boards are actually made and the "makers" also probably don't "make" boards, but order from China. We know very few true manufacturers of inflatable SUP worldwide, so we're really intrigued to know which of them you've spoken to and if they're puzzled as to why we've got a problem, we'd love to chat to them, as they clearly think they have a solution, so please let us know so we can connect. Maybe it'll help us speed up the solution process?

This isn’t barraging, this is a concerned backer that dropped two grand on your campaign and is rightfully asking questions and expecting some answers. Your last update was over two months ago and you keep telling us that you’re trying to resolve the issue, which seems to be related to the base dropstitch material.

      - What have you been doing to try to resolve the problem?
      - What is manufacturers take on this?
      - What is your plan for the future?

I will be the first one to admit that I know nothing about inflatable boards or what it takes to make one, but over the past two weeks I’ve been in touch with several SUP makers and distributors and frankly, everyone seems to be puzzled about what is going on.

So I kindly ask you to provide a detailed update. And yes, I know you will turn this around again and claim that it is us who are barraging you with questions and not letting you work, but at this point, adding another week to the six month delayed project to provide an update would be preferred over keeping us in the dark.

    10. Origin Paddleboards Creator on November 22

@Velijoze. We're not sure what is difficult to understand here. The material we have been using is defective and we have been working on a solution to amend this issue. Currently the issue is not resolved, hence the lack of update.

Sitting idle would be nice but not very practical. A small business whose sole purpose is to make inflatable paddle boards but doesn't have good enough material to make them with makes for enough work for 20 times our team size. Our team has been working non stop since day one and is continuing to do so to solve the issues at hand. Your barraging of us through this chat makes us wonder who is actually sitting idly? We wish we had some of that spare time.

As told enough times in this thread, we know it is not ideal for everyone who has backed us but it would also be appreciated if perhaps you looked at it from the other side too. We are doing all we can to make this project come to life and deliver on everyone's pledges and unfortunately we cannot do any more than what we are doing.

Now, if you will let us get back to work that would be appreciated.

      A question for @Origins and a comment for @Manfred

@Origins: out of curiosity are you able to repurpose the flawed material into something else entirely? Sandals? Backpacks? Lounges? Just curious...

@Manfred: We bought two boards while waiting for our Origin boards: a new 12'6" BOGA inflatable (I was owed money from a canceled BOGA Yoga retreat so it made sense to use my deposit for a board) and a one-week old 14' inflatable Imagine Connector from a friend who was in Croatia and didn't want to haul the board back to California. The hubby feels more stable and happy on the Connector than on the 12'6". I guess our quiver is slowly building...

    14. Manfred Keller on October 19

ok - i think i missunderstood this: "However, although we know what the problem is we do not currently have a solution as to how to fix it".
But now it seems that you and supplier dont really know understand the issue "We've already done that and we have a huge amount of material at our facility, but it all has the same issue to some extent. To isolate the problem requires a complete reverse engineering of the material production process to find where in the process is falling outside acceptable tolerance markers and then re-engineer the process to correct this."
It seems - you know that ist something wrong with material but dont know why.
I hope for us you are nearer on solving the issue then it sounds. A change of material is no opinion? After holiday i bought a used Mistral Equipe 14" to have something to paddel on until my Origin Boards will arrive. And i was surprised - the Mistral ist lightweight, strong, fast - all the properties the Origin Board should include to be the worldsbest SUP....

    15. Origin Paddleboards Creator on October 18

@ Manfred: we've never said that it was resolved, so it shouldn't be new information. As soon as we believe it is resolved we'll be sure to update all our backers on here.

    16. Manfred Keller on October 18

ok thank you - i thought the material issue has solved, but unfortunatly it isn`t
I think this info is new for us.

    17. Origin Paddleboards Creator on October 18

@ velijoze: as @ manfred said below, our address is on our website. If you'd like to visit, just drop us a mail so we can ensure someone is available.

    18. Origin Paddleboards Creator on October 18

@ Manfred: We wish it was that simple! We've changed nothing in our production process and the problem isn't with our manufacturing process, the issue is purely with the material and controlling the manufacturing process of the material to meet certain tolerances.

The problem also isn't consistent across all material, so in some areas it is more evident than others. The material is produced in rolls of hundreds of meters and depending on where on the roll we take material from, we get a variation of the issue.

So unfortunately ordering more of the same doesn't solve the problem. We've already done that and we have a huge amount of material at our facility, but it all has the same issue to some extent. To isolate the problem requires a complete reverse engineering of the material production process to find where in the process is falling outside acceptable tolerance markers and then re-engineer the process to correct this. We're doing all we can to assist in this process, but ultimately it is out of our hands - we test each new batch of material and provide in depth feedback to the supplier about elements we think are continuing to cause the problem. This then has to be taken onboard and worked into the next production run. This all takes time and ultimately putting a definitive timeframe on the whole process, of which we don't control all elements, isn't possible.

Beyond that, there isn't much more we can tell you. If it was as simple as ordering more material, we'd have done that a long time ago!

Hello Origin - I appreciate your clarifying informations - even so that might not influence the destiny of the project - but at least in my case that is turning scepticism into a positive attitude (again) ;)

    26. Origin Paddleboards Creator on September 26

@ Robin Rybin: you're welcome re the update, we hope it answers the questions you had. It certainly is a very large pile for the dumpster and many, many hours of work. Once the material issue has been solved and they have manufactured new material to the tolerances that we can accept and we have received this new material from our supplier, then all things running smoothly, we can produce circa 10 boards/week, so yes it would take 6-8 weeks to produce all the Kickstarter boards that are remaining. With regards to an estimated delivery date on the new material, as we've explained, our supplier and therefore we are unable to make an estimate at the moment, until we have definitively found the solution, we're still working on isolating the exact cause, which should confirm if our thoughts on the solution will work. So we're still a lot of work away from being able to put timeframes on it, but as soon as we can, we will update on here as we have said.

      Robin Rybin on September 25

Thank you Origin for the update! - what a pile of boards for the dumpster :(

So about one and a half month after you would receive good drop stitch material all remaining Kickstarter boards would be delivered - sounds good!
Since you already built 58 boards from good drop-stitch material this year and you have a ongoing business relation with your European producer for a few years already - is he not providing a estimated delivery date for new faultless material?

    28. Origin Paddleboards Creator on September 23

Thanks @t' we really appreciate the support.

    29. t' on September 23

To me Kickstarter is all about backing projects based on new ideas and as such it's rarely as seamless as just popping to a shop to buy something and take home. I think a lot of people get locked onto an expected shipping date and sometimes don't realise that it's a target rather than a guarantee. Creators can be overconfident and backers impatient and the right communication is a common challenge.

To be fair to Origin, plenty of campaigns communicate things better than they have but believe me; plenty do it far far worse. I wasn't happy to begin with because things seemed a little quiet for a while after the campaign succeeded, but they reversed that Robin's photos of the factory gave me the confidence to trust that things are moving along and being done.

Keep the faith guys, you'll get there :)

Hello Origin, hello Origin backer community

I‘m convinced that this project is full of good spirit - the boards that I was able to see at the factory looked awesome too!
But then again what about the communication?

I was informed by email in September, that so far one quarter of the boards had been produced. Am I the only one who doesn‘t see the dimension of delay reflected in the summary of all comments and updates here on the platform?
Origin stated a pace of 10 to 12 boards per week, if that was the best performence in one week, how long did it take to make the other up to 10 boards that were shipped so far?
How are reorders handled rigorously produced subsequent to all Kickstarterboards or not?

On one hand I got an offer for early 2 delivered boards, if I would add them on top of my original order pile, on the other hand I recieved the statement that “Kickstarterboards have always been made a priority“?

It has been mentioned here, that almost 80 boards were already reorderd or preoders, before the last invitation to go for even more.
Not my business? Well, if the Kickstarter-project is not affected - no problem!

The situation now seems to be, that the fate of the project fully depends on the arrival of good material to a point in time, where there are still enough resources around to produce - where is the deadline?

What possible delivery date foresees the europeen producer of the fabric to deliver finally good material?
How long does the manufacture of the remaining three quarters of the 83 Kickstarterboards take as soon as there is the right material around?

Why the switch from straight communication over this platform to personal email correspondence (beside details of individual orders)?

To clarify: I personally wish Origin the best possible success, this post is not ment to dish anybody in any way!
I know that Origin can not provide a delivery date as long as no good material is around and that material caused delay is not their mistake!
I‘m asking for a straight, open and progressive communication policy, so pretty please Origin come out of the dark - Thanks!

      Hi again,
the last day was a perfect dream. I was on the water at a few minutes past eight in the morning. All peaceful. No clouds, nice temperature and water like honey. Like a mirror. I did make a medium leg of about 6 km around Cap d'Antibes. On the way back a light inshore wind took up and pushed me home. What a morning ! A few words to the deck: it is, as you know, made out of a special cork. It provides a perfect grip with a very nice natural feeling. It dries more quickly than I expected. Nevertheless I waited until it was absolutely dry before I started unrigging and packing. Don't know if that is necessary but being a natural material I did not want to expose it too long to damp conditions. Packaging is very easy. All the stuff matches perfectly into the nice bag. The bag has a handy pouch with a zipper inside. The bag suits everything very closely. That is nice because nothing bounces around during transportation. The bag has handles on every side and it can be carried as well as a backpack. In my mind the complaints about the size of the bag are not valid. After packing you get a compact package with a nice balance.

      Iaoranna Backers and Paddlers,
today was my third day. First ride with wind and swell from behind. Pure bliss ! Loads of family fun afterwards. In my last posting I concentrated on the rails. I did not expect them to be that good and was so thrilled about my discovery that I forgot to mention some other outstanding features. The weight for instance. I take the board to the beach fully inflated every day. A walking distance of about 1 km. Piece of cake ! Allthough on the way back this feeling depends on the amount of paddling you did ;-) And believe me: you will paddle a lot. In combination with the FCS II system this feature even gets more accentuated because you don't have to worry about the fin during transportion. Getting it on or off the board is a matter of seconds. And of course the stunning looks. It is beautifull and very well done. A piece of craftmanship. My vacation ends tomorrow. Maybe I will have the chance to go out one more time. I wish you loads of fun with your boards. Look forward to it ! The unforeseen delivery delay will be forgotten quickly.

      Backers,
yeasterday my board arrived at the beautiful french riviera (12.6).I took it out for a ride right away.

Today was my second day with it. And all I can say is, it is: amazing, amazing, amazing.

One of the best features in my mind are the rails. They behave very much like hard board rails.

As I get more and more accustomed to it, I get more and more fun. Today I took a long ride with my son lying at the front end. We went rather far out. And allthough I had this extra load going back in an easy downward style was, well you know already, amazing. It esaily took up the speed of the swell. Both of us came out of the water with a broad grin on the face. Wife and daugther took the next ride. Same outcome. And this is another great feature. You can paddle it in a challenging way as well as in a cruising style. And it shines with both.

Around the beach were some other inflatables. Some of them well known big brands. But they do not compare to Origin.

I'am so glad about my decision for Origin.

      Happy Paddling

@Backsgast I think you're confused and projecting your feelings.
      I'm not in a frenzy.
I just think that origin was a bit dishonest in choosing not to share their knowledge that my board would be 5 months late. that's an opinion, it's not a frenzy.
I asked them for this info in june and they ignored my request for eta.
I'm sure I'll get my board, my mind is not in turmoil.
that doesn't change my opinion that these folks were cowardly in not sharing info many backers would have found useful to have 2 months ago when origin obviously knew what the delays would be.
at the same time, I don't really care about your opinion about my point of view.
as for paddling with the board, I guess I might find out about that in another 10 months.
this might reassure you about my state of mind.
if it doesn't, that's okay too. go paddle your board.
don't concern yourself with my opinion here.
