Outgoing Border Chief: Trump’s Wall is a Waste of Resources That’s ‘Not Going To Work’

video

President Trump rallied support during his campaign to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border. However, the outgoing head of the Customs and Border Protection agency is warning that it will be a waste of time and money when it comes to stopping illegal immigration.

“I think that anyone who’s been familiar with the southwest border and the terrain… kind of recognizes that building a wall along the entire southwest border is probably not going to work,” said Gil Kerlikowske in an interview with ABC News’ Brian Ross.

The wall has been a centerpiece of the Trump agenda, even though Mexican officials have said multiple times that they will not cover the costs of its construction. Kerlikowske explained that even if there was a wall, the construction and maintenance costs would be a drain on taxpayers, and it wouldn’t be effective when more immigrants enter the U.S. through other entry points and through other means.

“I don’t think the wall is feasible,” Kerlikowske said. “I don’t think its particularly the smartest way to use taxpayer money on infrastructure.”

Kerlikowske used the rest of the interview to defend the Obama Administration’s record on illegal immigration, citing the declining number of migrants who have managed to enter the United States.
