What is GamerGate?

Our Mission

KotakuInAction is a platform for open discussion of the issues where gaming, nerd culture, the Internet, and media collide.
We believe that the current standards of ethics in the media has alienated the artists, developers, and creators who perpetuate the things we love, enjoy, and enthusiastically build communities around. We have taken notice of various incidents involving conflicts of interest and agenda-pushing within media which we feel are damaging to the credibility of the medium and harm the community at large. We believe the current media is complicit in the proliferation of an ideology that squashes individuality, divides along political lines, and is stifling to the freedom of creativity that is the foundation of human expression.
KotakuInAction is a community that condemns willful censorship, exclusion, harassment, or abuse. It is a community that organizes to hold the media accountable to the concept of artistic freedom by standing up for the artist, the developer, the writer, the filmmaker, and all who enjoy the freedom to create, explore, and expand. It is a community that allows the exchange of information, supports the ongoing discussion of media ethics, and protects the right of the individual to embrace their personal interests in entertainment and fandom.

She is a public figure who frequently speaks on TV and to news organizations. The media are trying to completely erase her very integral part in a murder and brutal torture crime in favor of muh narrative.
Let's start with her actual crimes:
Spurling himself interviewed Donna: "I couldn't believe this girl who was so intelligent and nice-looking could be so unemotional about what she was telling me she and her friends had done. They'd squeezed the victim's testicles with a pair of pliers, beat him, burned him.
Not only that, she gave ragingly homophobic responses when she was arrested and justified killing and torturing a man because teh gay.
For the next 15 to 20 days (police aren't sure just when Vigliarole died), the man was starved, burned, beaten, and tortured. (Even 10 years later, Spurling could recall Rita's chilling response when they questioned her about shoving a three-foot metal bar up Vigliarole's rear: "He was a homo anyway." How did she know? "When I stuck the bar up his rectum he wiggled."
She was an invite speaker to yesterday's women's march:
Deadline.com talking about her, as if she were a victim, completely erasing the murdered victim's story; no mention of the brutal torture: http://archive.is/sdPwB
Her appearance on CGTV on the women's march: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0wztibnmiU
Even though this is by far not the main point, once again, homophobia is being completely ignored by SJWs and gays are being thrown under the bus by SocJus. Everything she does is self-serving: complaining about prison conditions on national TV, without showing even a little bit of remorse for her victim - lol fuck you? How the fuck can SJWs celebrate and invite someone who performed such a monstrous act, at what is supposed to be an """inclusive""" event?
Imagine if the political right propped up a man who brutally tortured a woman for 20 days. Can you imagine the never-ending shitstorm that would happen?
I haven't been this physically repulsed by news in a very long time. FUCK.

Don't surprise me, one of the leaders for the woman's march is a muslim woman who supports Sharia Law, trying to process their views with logic doesn't work. They don't operate in the same reality as you or I.
Social activism is a mess of hideous contradiction and cognitive dissonance. Skin color and other immutable characteristics are all that matters not any form of cogent, coherent reality. In the last few years I have come to the conclusion they are basically racist, sexist postmodern neo marxists, with a totally wreckless disregard for reality, and as a result they have plenty of total monsters in their ranks and the ideology both glorifies them and forgives them. Around the outside of this they hang their innocent buzzwords like inclusion, diversity and equality and lure in the uninitiated. So from the outside it looks benign but as soon as you examine the behaviour or the inner core ideas it just gets untenable and totally incoherent and the con is exposed if you are at all capable of intellectual honesty.

As somebody who recently renounced all of that, I think the strongest reason I could ignore all of the bullshit people/ideas surrounding me was this notion of "well thats just the CRAZY ones, they are a minority and don't represent us whatsoever - its unfair to claim that they represent us as a whole".
Of course, if this were the case, then most of us should have had no problem denouncing the crazies and maintaining the moderacy of the movement. That doesn't happen in the slightest though, as you feel afraid to speak out against the most extreme views given that the moment you do, you know "bigot, xenophobe, racist, misogynist" will rain down upon you. This is why social justice will always be a race to the bottom. You can't disagree with a more extreme view because disagreeing is being bigoted - that view is then made even more extreme, but still nobody can disagree. Its a movement based completely around control via social acceptance.

I liken these types of people to be the ones who were fervent during the witch burnings of old. The kind of people who didn't care about what they were doing or had done, just simply wanted to be on the "right side of history". A sort of mass delusion where empathy and rationality goes right out the window and all sorts of horrors can emerge.
Of all the illnesses in our society, I count this one as one of the worst.
[–]EgoandDesire 9 points10 points11 points  (6 children)
So the womans march was created by someone advocating Sharia Law and also featured a woman who brutally murdered a man. At what point do we say "enough is enough" and start doing something about this shit?
[–]Dzonatan 2 points3 points4 points  (5 children)
That's the thing. They act so edgy because if we react with anger or any rash action then they will use out reaction to justify their edgy behaviour even more. This is a rigged game and the winning move is to not play at all.
[–]TedsEmporiumEmporium 7 points8 points9 points  (1 child)
the winning move is to not play at all.
I'm not so sure. Staying silent and not challenging these sociopaths is how they've amassed so much cultural and political capital.

Anything that can go up will eventually go down.
[–]Quor18My preferred pronouns are "Smith" and "Wesson." 2 points3 points4 points  (2 children)
No, they need to be opposed. We're not at DOTR RWDS levels yet, but if we get there, she will be one of those that hang highest.
[–]Dzonatan 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
DOTR RWDS
What's that?
[–]marinuso [score hidden]  (0 children)
DOTR = Day Of The Rope, a term from the Turner Diaries, the day when the white people will hang all the 'race traitors'
RWDS = Right Wing Death Squads
(Yeah, I also think it's going a bit far.)
[–]Neo_TechniDon't demand what you refuse to give. 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
Girls will be girls.
[–]MikiSayaka33I don't know if that tumblrina is a race-thing or a girl-thing 7 points8 points9 points  (5 children)
Maybe the media will say "Just ignore that, girls need role models." Whooboy, out of all the women they picked they choose the one, who probably murdered a gay guy and is openingly sexist (I personally don't wanna use the word "homophobic," because the word confuses to me a bit, I mean 'fear of gays'?).
[–]voltagegate[S] 6 points7 points8 points  (2 children)
It's pretty deplorable. But to be fair, he probably wasn't gay, and she may have just told the investigator that, because fuck it, she's a legit psycho.
[–]MikiSayaka33I don't know if that tumblrina is a race-thing or a girl-thing 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Thanks for the clarification, voltagegate.
[–]Singulaire 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
The "He was a homo anyway" line is, according to your source, not from Donna Hylton but from one of her accomplices, named there only as "Rita". Hylton is still a fucking monster, but we need to keep the facts straight.
[–]J2383Wiggler Wonger 3 points4 points5 points  (1 child)
who probably murdered a gay guy
Or at the very least a guy who wiggled when having an iron bar shoved up his asshole.
[–]notshitaltsaysProud Retard 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
wouldn't that be more of a sign hes not gay? At some point, you kinda get used to buttstuff, according to the song Stinkfist, atleast.
[–]Kreissv 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
This needs to spread, we should NOT be putting murderers even further up a fucking pedestal
[–]samuelbt 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
Small note, you mixed her up with another of the women (Rita) for the homophobic remarks.
[–]samuelbt 2 points3 points4 points  (11 children)
Can ex prisoners not be prison reform advocates? Ultimately she served her time and paid more for her debt to society than was mandated (repeated solitary confinement and sexual assault). Sure there will be whitewashing of things, welcome to any advocacy, but it's not like they're glorifying her crime.
[–]CallMeBigPapaya 15 points16 points17 points  (1 child)
Except she talks about being "unjustly" imprisoned and she's completely remorseless.
[–]samuelbt 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Just went back thrive the stuff above and I must have missed that. Could use a pointing.
[–]voltagegate[S] 13 points14 points15 points  (6 children)
That's the other side of the coin sure, but:
1) it's completely fucking self-serving
2) The media aren't just white-washing, they're completely DARVOing the shit out of it. None of the articles on her speech I've read mention her crime, and some of the articles even portray her as a victim (see the deadline link).
3) And finally and most importantly, in her interview and speech to the entire nation, she shows ZERO. FUCKING. REMORSE. She is strong. She is empowered. She is happy.
How do you think the victim's family feels about her being propped up as a brave womyn national hero for being forced to endure emprisonment? Can you imagine being in their position? Fucking horrific.
Edit: Also, imagine if the political right propped up a man who brutally tortured a woman for 20 days. Can you imagine the never-ending shitstorm that would happen?
[–]samuelbt 1 point2 points3 points  (5 children)
For me, the point of prison sentences is the atonement. I'm not expecting someone who served her time to live her life in self flaggelation. If I did, I'd advocate her sentence be for life.
A major issue in American society is we demand harsh sentences but then don't recognize them once they have been served. Is it any wonder recidivism is so high?
[–]voltagegate[S] 7 points8 points9 points  (1 child)
Yes, her sentence should've been higher. Even the investigator said so himself. For such a crime, sometimes the justice system doesn't always get it right.
[–]samuelbt -1 points0 points1 point  (0 children)
While she had plea bargained from 25 to life down to 15 to life she still ultimately spent 27 years in prison so where the investigator wanted.
[–]waveofreason 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
atonement
What atonement was there exactly? She served her court mandated sentence but this doesn't count for atonement. Did she try to make amends with the victims family? Did she express how sorry she was in any regard? No, from what I read she just blamed her home life, which sounds horrible, but isn't justification for becoming a hit-woman and torturer.
After time served she should be allowed to continue with her life but don't expect any damn parades. The only time I want to hear from someone like this is when the message is "don't do what I did"
[–]SpectroSpecter 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
recidivism is so high
Common reddit "knowledge" that isn't true. US recidivism is very average even though our gang population is significantly higher.
[–]Singulaire 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Serving the sentence doesn't erase your past. She paid her debt to society, which means she gets to go free and have a job and live among the general populace, but she doesn't get to forget the heinous things she did, and she doesn't get to have everyone else forget the heinous things she did.
[–]TooAshamedToTell [score hidden]  (0 children)
Agreed, but do you think their movement would take the same kind of empathy towards a man who had committed domestic violence? Or would they smear him into the ground, and then use him being part of a movement as a means to call it misogynistic and hateful?
This is not to say we should use their tactics, but more that we should point out their hypocrisy. If they claim that anybody's past actions sours an argument/movement, then theirs is clearly repugnant.
[–]a1eksanderr [score hidden]  (0 children)
I find it very strange that there seems to be no Wikipedia page either for her or for this incident.
[–]Mathenaut [score hidden]  (0 children)
What she did was horrible enough, but the homophobia is a stretch and doesn't really come out in the reading. I do not understand the need to exaggerate that part when there is plenty of raw material to criticize here. No need for alternative facts on this.
Also, don't pass the political right as a victim when they put up unironic supremacists for cabinet appointments.

The parent mentioned Public Figure. Many people and non-native speakers may be unfamiliar with this word. Here is the definition:

In United States law, public figure is a term applied in the context of defamation actions (libel and slander) as well as invasion of privacy. A public figure (such as a politician, celebrity, or business leader) cannot base a lawsuit on incorrect harmful statements unless there is proof that the writer or publisher acted with actual malice (knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard for the truth). The burden of proof in defamation actions is higher in the case of a public figure. [View More]
