This is amazing! I just started drawing, hope to be this good one day.

It's really not hard to achieve at all. Once you know what symbol drawing is and how to avoid it, you will learn how to do this in no time.

...Googles "symbol drawing"

Edit: Finished Googling. Breaking things down into lines has helped me get past symbol drawing fairly quickly. I picked up the pencil for the first time a week ago. Here's a sketch I did of my dog: http://imgur.com/a/uhRj8. Thoughts?

Honest critique: you suffer from "line insecurity". You go over the same line way too many times, questioning it over and over again as you refine it. You need to get more loose, try tons of "gesture drawing", and avoid the temptation to delve right into the details. Be OK with expressive, simple line drawings which look unfinished.

I literally just started teaching myself a week ago using a free online course, so this type of feedback is really helpful. Thank you!

Edit: Sorry, I should have included a link to the course the first time around. Here you go! http://draw.academy/how-to-draw

Mind sharing the course?

Sorry to be a debbie downer, but those videos are pretty bad. He basically ignores every good principle that I've learned about good drawing and which is repeated over and over by my favorite artists / mentors. He also seems to provide a ton of off-the-cuff weird theory that I've never seen mentioned anywhere else.

Here are two much, much better series (and with much more content):

https://www.youtube.com/user/Sycra

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClM2LuQ1q5WEc23462tQzBg (Proko)

You can tell just by looking at these guys results that they are top-notch artists. You will get a hell of a lot more mileage from these videos.

No apology needed, this is the exact kind of direction I'm looking for. I'll check out these channels later.

You're most welcome!

I was there not long ago, so if you keep practicing, you'll see improvements very quickly.

For me, using gel ink markers (like the Pilot kind: https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-20665BL/Pens/Pilot-G-2-Gel-Ballpoint-Pen-Black) helped me get past this "line overdraw" phase, since you can't erase or draw soft lines, so they more or less push you to draw single, permanent lines.

I would recommend buying a book called "The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals" if you intend to go deeper into animal drawing. It's a bit pricey, but extremely worth it. Also: "Teaches" you expression drawing, as in quick, dynamic free-hand sketches. It helped me a great deal!

EDIT: Grammar. Also, if you want some other recommendations, feel free to PM or something. Self-taughts unite :)

I'm prepping to go back to school for Architecture, and sketching is an important skill to have. So right now I'm trying to learn by sketching everything I possibly can.

Really? I'm trying to get into Civil Engineering. So (technical) drawing is going to be a big part of my work as well.

My advice, though, is to visit r/artfundamentals

They helped me archieve a cleaner/more precise line, and I was just a lurker back then :)

Wow, great resource! I'm looking at Building Science as a potential degree, which is a civil engineering program that has a focus in architectural studies.

Indeed, and the best way of avoiding symbol drawing is to sculpt! Plasticine/Zbrush/Sculptris is your friend!

Please explain. Couldn't find much online.

Here's what I found "You are working with symbols and symbols come from the left hemisphere." The key to drawing successfully, he emphasized, is forcing the brain to move away from symbols for example, to look at a human nose and actually draw what it looks like instead of drawing the shape that the brain associates with a nose."

Sometimes helps to flip the picture upside down. That way it isn't as easily recognizable

This is what my grade 9 art teacher made us do! Clicked right away after that. You don't recognize it as an eye, for example, when it's upside down nearly as much, so you can focus on what is actually creating the image rather than what you THINK is creating the image.

Yes. I once took a "Drawing in the Right Side of the Brain" class and we used this technique. I was amazed at what I had drawn upside down.

I could draw fairly well but not great before I discovered it, but someone gave me the original edition of this book years ago and it changed my entire perspective (literally). In a nutshell, it's all about seeing things as lines rather than as assigned shapes. Ask random people with no skill to draw an eye and you're going to get a similar shape from all of them. And while you will recognize that it's a human eye, it won't look anything like the one in OP's sketch. They're using the shape they learned as children. Another great example is "Christmas Tree". Those who do not think of themselves as having the ability to draw will certainly draw a large, triangular shape on top of a rectangle trunk. Maybe the triangle will be jagged to represent the branches and maybe not. We will all recognize it as a christmas tree, but it won't actually look like a realistic representation of one. This is symbol drawing.

The way to avoid this is too look not at objects, but at the lines they create between themselves and other objects of backgrounds. To see what is actually there instead of drawing a symbol for it. Symbols can be useful for communication (a simple smiley face conveys happiness quickly and efficiently), but they're not factual representations.

One of my favorite tricks in the book was the "upside-down sketch". Take a drawing you like and turn it upside down. Now draw it exactly as you see it, upside-down. This will force your brain to look at the lines instead of "that's an eye and that's a tree".

I don't know if any of that helps, but if you'd like to learn more, I strongly recommend that book.

I Googled and found this site (which, in case anyone wonders, I have no affiliation with) for you. I skimmed through it and it seems to have a decent list of books to help you progress through various stages of proficiency.

Edit: I should probably add that it has an example of a "symbol drawing" as well as an explanation.

u/thesavage72 did a good job explaining symbol drawing. But maybe this image could help you visualize it: http://i.imgur.com/UnbYV4p.jpg

As always, I recommend Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. It's not exactly neurologically accurate since it was written in the 70s, but the principles are exactly what you learn in Drawing 101 at art school.

What is symbol drawing? I couldn't find much info online.

Check out the book, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". It's on Amazon and explains symbol drawing really well and how to avoid it.

From my memory of reading the book, symbol drawing is the way you learn to represent things as a child. For example, you draw the sun as a circle with rays coming out, or a house as a square with a triangle roof on top. Having these symbols is the way the left hand side of your brain, the side that prefers symbols and language, can translate what you see on to the paper. When drawing, it is important to engage the right hand side of your brain to draw what you actually see in front of you, rather than the symbolic version the dominant left side wants to see.

Hope that helps, it explains it a lot better in the book.

Edit: Grammar

I made leaps and bounds with my drawing ability after reading "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." The exercises were very helpful. Still not a "quick fix" - you still need to put in the time.
