Aziz Ansari gave a very funny monologue where his main point was that we should be united and hope Trump does a good job and be true to our American values. He also defended Trump supporters, saying that the claim that they're all racist is just not true. He didn't take any cheap shots and really didn't even say a single bad thing about him. Here's where this gets me a bit pissed off.
Anytime a celebrity speaks out against Trump, the right-wing commentators and politicians all criticize them for trying to divide the country. When Meryl Streep gave her speech so many people said "It's not brave for her to go out there and attack Trump. Why doesn't she say she's willing to give Trump a chance and hope he does well?" And then literally Aziz Ansari does just that and he gets no praise or reaction from the right. Meryl Streep talks about the importance of having empathy and let's maybe not make fun of disabled reporters, and Trump sends THREE tweets criticizing her. And when his favorite show, SNL, makes a concerted effort to reach across the aisle, it elicits no reaction.
My point is that as much as I liked Aziz Ansari's monologue and I appreciate his efforts to be as inclusive as possible, it doesn't seem like positive remarks get the right's attention. They obviously don't care about celebrities saying we should give Trump a chance (they only say that as another way to criticize celebrities who speak out), so what do they want? Is the only way to elicit a reaction by attacking him? It seems that way but I understand more divisiveness and toxicity is not what we need.
Sorry if this rambling is incoherent. I just saw the episode and this stuck with me. What do you guys think?
