Kellyanne Conway: Spicer 'gave alternative facts' on inauguration crowd (nbcnews.com)

This morning I was thinking about how Trump and Michael Scott are similar. Michael's 'of all my empty promises, this is the most generous.' And Trumps tweet today about talking to african american preachers is a lot like Michael's 'my black friend' quotes (which I can't find and may have made up).

Or "lies". I really wish the media would take the gloves off and call false statements out for what they truly are. Lies.
It does seem like they're moving that direction. I noticed a few moments in coverage after the election I'd never seen before, where certain news outlets were plainly calling things out as incorrect rather than an opposing viewpoint.
It seems like the only way to combat it at this point. Even when news outlets are totally neutral and do "he said, she said" journalism the GOP will accuse them of being biased, so they might as well just call the GOP on their bullshit instead of trying to act like a lie is an opinion.
And she knows it's bullshit. She's just the type of person whose okay with spouting it. And when she gets called on it she gasps and clutches her pearls and pivots to a new line of bullshit.
Welcome to the new administration. It's going to be a long four years.
Conway also suggested that Todd's insistence on asking why Spicer delivered a demonstrably false statement could affect the White House's treatment of the media. "If we're going to keep referring to the press secretary in those types of terms I think we're going to have to rethink our relationship here," she said.
"If you keep calling us on our bullshit lies we may have to reevaluate this whole 'free press' thing you have going on over here."
This is absolutely insane, how are these words coming out of her mouth and why do some people think that's acceptable?!? Honestly feels like I'm taking crazy pills.
My gf and I were watching the Chuck Todd exchange and you can write the script on this shit. I was calling out "here comes the deflect and pivot" and sure enough, she never actually answered the question and did just that.
[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATH [スコア非表示] 3分前 (0子コメント)
I just wonder what people like her actually want from this administration.
I have a hard time being so cynical as to think that their motivations are purely from greed. And anyway, I would bet that Conway could make a lot more money working outside of government than working for Trump.
So what are her goals for this administration? What is she hoping that they accomplish?
She must have truly believed that Trump was the best choice for president. But she must be more aware than any of us of how incredibly shallow and stupid he is. She knows that she is lying. But what is the end that she wants?

Uh, the NPS stopped in the 90s (not the Bush Administration) because they were threatened with lawsuits by the Million Man March because it was less than the organizers claimed.
Let's walk through the entire statement.
The Bush administration defunded the Parks Department
There is no such thing as the Parks Department, nor did the Bush Administration defund the National Park Service. In 2001, his first year, the budget for the NPS was 2.1 Billion and in 2008, his last year, was 2.7 billion.
then in charge of issuing crowd count estimates,
The NPS was never "in charge" in fact no federal agency is "in charge" they just gave estimates for people using the parks land. Other organizations like the FBI and state organizations also estimate crowd sizes, but to say they were "in charge" is disingenuous.
when republicans objected to the estimate for the Million Man March.
No, it was the organizers who objected because the ~400,000 Man March isn't as catchy.
Literally everything in your comment is an "alternative fact."

Absolutely. It's just a baffling statement.
The reason this could work for them is that this phrase "alternate facts" can be perceived another way, and used in multiple ways just as Fake News was.
For example, sharks have a lot of teeth. An alternate fact might be that a lot of sharks are grey.
The goal here for the Trump campaign is to get to a point where nothing means anything.

It's not just that she defended the lie. She took it a step further and put the media on notice that they better damn well get the facts straight -- the administration's facts, that is.
Conway also suggested that Todd's insistence on asking why Spicer delivered a demonstrably false statement could affect the White House's treatment of the media.
"If we're going to keep referring to the press secretary in those types of terms I think we're going to have to rethink our relationship here," she said.
That last line is incredibly scary.
It is, but right now the media is adjusting to some of the preposterous ways they're being talked to and treated, mostly because they're not expecting it to become even more absurd, until things like yesterday happen with a new standard.
I feel Trump's administration will lose a long-term war with the media tasked with reporting on them. At some point, the press will go "sure, revoke our access and credentials. see where that gets you", and simply take the kid gloves off. Access journalism will be replaced by investigative journalism, which under the right circumstances can be much, much more damaging to an administration looking to control what is being reported.
Journalists have a moral duty to tell the truth to the public. They aren't perfect, but they can't just repeat whatever BS the White House releases or they aren't journalists.
It is critical that they stick to that no matter what. Better that they refuse to play ball and get kicked out of the white house than to trade access for reporting lies as truth.

It's also a dead giveaway as to their point of most insecurity - crowd sizes (routinely bloated the attendance numbers at his rallies) and the fact that a majority of Americans don't support them (popular vote, favorability polling). They can't stay quiet on this point because hey feel it undercuts them at an existential level, so they'd rather go blab some lies that they don't think they'll be held accountable for.

Lied. They lied. Again. Because they know if little Donny doesn't feel validated he'll fire them all, he doesn't care how he gets validation or if it's even valid validation he just has to think that more people love him than that black guy. I am SO fucking done with this man child and we're only like a month or two in since he won, this pathetic excuse of a human being let alone a president is going to be there for 4 more years at least.
Is he going to launch a fucking nuke at his own cities if they don't enforce a law to sing a daily prayer to the great lovable supreme president Trump? It's fucking pathetic, but the people that support him either blind themselves to the truth or just don't seem to care that every single time they're being talked to, a lie is being told and that the only thing Trump cares about is looking good, he'll do some things to fix the country probably, because it'll make him look good. But if more people support destroying america than repairing him then he's going to destroy america so he can be loved by more people. They fucking support it. What. The. Fuck. Happened. America?! Were you that pissed off at having a woman after a black man that you'd rather have a mix between a donkey and a badly dressed gorilla? With the intelligence of a Goldfish.

She is pretty good at deflecting off the complete craziness of Trump's actions. She apparently has no qualms with repeatedly lying and grabbing ahold of an alternate reality. Chick Todd is the man though. Held her feet to the fire.
Chuck's been allowing her to deflect and wait out the clock for over a year now. Happy he held her feet to the fire in this instance (and hopefully moving forward) but he certainly is not the man.

Think about it. We now live in an America where the administration in the White House blatantly lies and calls it "alternative facts" God help us. And lets hope this doesn't catch on with our kids. Sadly, this is what we have to look forward to for the next 4 years.

During the whole interview she does not answer a single one of his questions. I don't know why I expected the blatant deflection of questions to stop after the inauguration.
It was pretty telling how she smirked and chuckled throughout the interview. She know's she's giving a line of bullshit, and she seems to be okay with it. And when you call her on it she goes into "How DARE you!" mode, and uses that to run out the clock.
Buckle up, folks. We've got four years of this nonsense.

I would like to propose the #alternativefacts hashtag to spread some alternative facts about Conway, Spicer, and Trump.
If you watch the full interview, when pressed on Sean Spicer's "provable falsehoods", she threatens Chuck Todd with cutting off their relationship if he continues to talk about the press secretary "in those types of terms." The whole idea of "oh the press is mean to me, so let me just discredit them and cut them off" is SO worrying. Really gonna be hard to keep an informed democracy moving forward.
This is actually kinda scary
"Conway also suggested that Todd's insistence on asking why Spicer delivered a demonstrably false statement could affect the White House's treatment of the media."
The White House's treatment of the media should always be the same. So are they going to start banning certain agencies from reporting at the White House if these "problems" get worse?

See, I could even almost get where she was coming from if Spicer actually did present facts that the media was generally avoiding. For example, "The weather may have affected turnout," or "Trump's inauguration (may have) had a higher turnout than any other Republican president's. In that case, they would be alternative facts - facts that are demonstrably true, but the media is ignoring.
I hope they either change their tune or eventually lose supporters. At this point, though, it feels like Trump could say that the sky is green and they'd tout it as an "alternative fact".
