You can reach out to the miner, BTC.com, prove you were the sender, explain the mistake, and humbly ask for a refund... it's worked it the past

you should probably contact whoever confirmed your transaction, maybe they’ll give you some of it back? who knows

Your wallet software is really shit if it lets you spend (more than) 5,000 times the average fee for a transaction without (at least) giving you a warning.

But: you made it into the first block!

How can such things be avoided ? Can anyone please explain how this happens and how can someone be safe ?

These sorts of things are almost always a result of a manually crafted transaction where somebody flipped the fee and send fields. Not something a typical user encounters.

people sometime enters a custom fee to get quicker processing. OP failed to see that the fee was in btc not dollars.

Always double check you transaction. Check receivers, check sender, check amount and check the fee.

So how much fee do u have to pay for quicker processing? And how much quicker will it actually be?

[–]Pretagonist [スコア非表示]  (4子コメント)

Well with a high enough fee you get confirmation within around 10 minutes. If your transaction app failes to set an appropriate fee it can actually take hours when the blocks are full. I often just go over the suggested fee with a few cents when I'm in a hurry but there are sites where you can see the current fee balance.

[–]Abell68 [スコア非表示]  (3子コメント)

So a few cents more is enough? what about a few dollars more? does it make lots of difference?

Blocksize is 1 MB, so miners can select any transactions they want to fill that up. You just need to be within the 1MB of highest fee/byte transactions to be in the next block. Average waiting time for your first confirmation is <5 minutes.

[–]Pretagonist [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

You only need to beat the other transactions. Once you're in the top 1mb of pending transactions more fees won't make any difference.

Use electrum - there's no field to input the fee, only a slider.

Why do you have to be a complete retard and write, "so this just happened" why not write in the title, "blockchain transaction with 0.5 btc fee" - that way we all know not to waste our time clicking on it or giving a fuck about it.

U love dat bait. U find dat bait irresistible.

Yet you hate urself for taking dat bait ._.

Wallets should get better, these can turn away potential users. Sorry, but bitcoin is just too complicated for the general public. Wallets should warn or never allow a fee more than a certain value.

My wife uses CoPay so I'm gonna have to disagree with you there.

[–]DajZabrij [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

OP, tell us what wallet was it? This is something wallet programers should be ashamed of, so negative publicuty is needed.

It would be nice if large fees triggered an "Are you sure you want to send 0.5 BTC in fees?" confirmation popup in wallets.

Transferred some mbtc from my QT to my Mycellum and somehow 95% was taken as fees. Qt settings low fee as possible and Mycellum set at economical.

Stuff like this and your sitch is why Bitcoin will struggle to go mainstream.

Looks about right without a block size increase...
