The solution to the block size issue is to have a board regularly deciding what the next block size should be.

We could have a decentralized network with representatives from different mining pools. We could have the President of the Bitcoin Foundation nominate a governor of that board, that will in turn assemble a committee of experts to determine the most appropriate block size policy.

Let me get serious here, bc I don't want this question to seem flippant or sarcastic... what the hell is actually being developed by these developers?

My background is not IT but I have been involved with the IT industry in numerous roles, including project manager in roll-outs of retail infrastructure and updating software. That being said, I have to wonder, again, how the shit can it be so fucking difficult to ...- no, scratch that. I know exactly what the problem is.

It is im-fucking-possible to steer a ship with votes and opinions. They are so anti-authoritarian (or pro-libertarian, potato, potahto) that they are paying the price that comes with no leadership. Satoshi actually made the vast majority of commits, even when the bug fixes came from people like Hearn, Garzin, Gavin, etc. Bitcoin has made virtually no progress in 5 years. How can it be another 12 months to fix this and still be Bitcoin is not dead?

But, let's put aside the disagreement and fast-forward to 12 months from now: the mining pools will collude to decide what's best for their preference. So this can literally be decided, right now. This week.

If I were Gavin:

  1. I'd hire someone to be the unpopular scapegoat: the publicist, so to speak ("it's important the 'jury' likes the leader, not so much the messenger")
  2. I'd have a rock-solid plan so momentum in hitting targets can be helpful in raising morale
  3. I'd tell the community, in no uncertain terms, "to either get on board, or get out"

Now keep in mind I don't stand for what Gavin does, but, FWIW, I think the above 3 points would be infinitely more successful than puff-pieces and blog posts and such.

The ultimate irony: red tape is strangling the life and growth out of Bitcoin. Bitcoin was DOA the moment Satoshi decided they'd hand out keys to 3 people. Fuck, it was DOA the moment Satoshi all left.

you are so right, I have had to do software project for just one person and it was almost impossible to settle of some even really basic issues !

That's why things like "specification documents" are really important. If you don't have a plan it is a plan to fail.

I remember it now:

"If you fail to plan, you plan to fail"

Even if you gathered the top 20 world-class experts in a room and made them develop something in a democratic way, they would fail. There is a reason every single corporation is run effectively as a monarchy: that's the only way to make it work. Anything that runs purely based on democracy and consensus is basically bound to fail, because any one person can derail the whole process. There's a reason why "design by committee" is a dirty phrase in any engineering field.

So if it's completely ineffective, why aren't they rationalizing the ends justifying the means- scratch that, I guess "they" are. I don't know enough about the Bitcoin honchos, but I do know it's rotten to the core. I guess it's really just a matter of why dragging it out- scratch that too. Of course you drag it out if the product is a movement above all else. A profitable movement. Stagnation actually buys more money printing time, huh? The Gaiden dev was more articulate in nailing this (and wow, /r/Bitcoin is upset with him!)

The solution to the block size issue is to have a board regularly deciding what the next block size should be.

Nah, we should let the Blockchain decide.

As in, literally, every mined block is allowed to adjust the block size by say 1% either way. If the miners actually want the block size to be increased, this way we could get from 1Mb to 20Mb in just slightly more than two days.

[–][deleted] 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (6子コメント)

This is actually an amazingly logical and proper idea. Then it will continually adjust to demand.

[–]xXxDeAThANgEL99xXx 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (5子コメント)

It can also go hilariously wrong in all kinds of ways. I hope the word gets to the devs and they implement it!

[–][deleted] 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (4子コメント)

How so? I don't know the back end code at all so don't understand why it wouldn't be a good idea

[–]xXxDeAThANgEL99xXx 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (3子コメント)

I mean, socially. "The miners" are not a monolithic entity that knows what it wants and why, they don't really have the utility of the network close at heart, or even their own direct benefit as some of them can decide to do weirdest shit to drive off competition, or aiming for short-term profit, or anything really.

Having that option would start a perpetual shitstorm the size of the Giant Red Spot.

edit: I mean, it wouldn't be "adjusting to demand" as you put it, it would be adjusting to all kinds of wild fantasies everyone has about the best target size.

edit2: maybe I was unclear in stating my proposal: I meant something like option in each client that allows it to adjust the block size toward any configured value. Not that block sizes adjust automatically to fit the current demand (but with a lag), that would be the same as not having a block size limit for pretty much all intents and purposes.

[–][deleted] 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

i see the problem if miners get to choose direction. but if it was out of their hands and automatically adjusts depending on previous block size, then there might be something to it.

[–]xXxDeAThANgEL99xXx -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Nah, as I said in my edit it's pretty much as having no limit, you only prevent short-term bursts of spam and it does nothing to incentivize fees.

Typical bipolar manic rant.

Your ideas are fundamentally flawed, and I won't even waste my time pointing out the comedy in them.

Instead of wasting your money and time on this latest venture (even self-satirically), have you considered going back to college?

Fuck, you're obviously creative and think outside the box, but your ego and creativity are going to be the things that keep you from accomplishing any actual work.

Or you know what, fuck it. You've already lost all your money on gambles, and burned all your relationships. Why stop now?

There is no dopamine blast in hard work and climbing back out of the hole you've dug. No, far better that you continue to consume whatever stimulants that have brought you to this point and continue to leverage your wealth against increasingly unlikely odds.

On one hand I'm worried about you, and hope that you get the professional help you need. On the other hand, your antics amuse me.

P.S. The autocorrect from your mobile of "Carl Sagan" to "Carl Sega" reveals key metrics data that can be used to analyze your frequently discussed topics and map all your alts. Be more careful in the future. Also, I wish Demon Haunted World had the sound byte at the beginning from Genesis games that shouted "Saaaaagan".

28 times! That's like 5 times better than 12. Side chains will literally make those obsolete though. The banks will literally be powerless to compete with this, nor will the gubmint be able to shut down a network of chains as far as the eye can see. It'll drive battery technology for phones and push for greater insulators and cooling ...rays(?) (this is a fact, since current govt regulated technology would heat up to re-entry level temperatures within minutes under the power of all the chains). Imagine a ledger where the NCAAP can't remove "copyright" (extorted material). Youtube would be trustless and every man, woman and child would have the entirety of youtube's catalog at their fingertips! So if you're going through a tunnel you can watch TV. The storage may be an issue, yes, but nano spheres can easily be implemented through apps mining in the cloud under Moore's Law. Each sphere itself will be connected by chains too. The complexity will rival a human brain. Bitcoin will drive all of this. Gentleman, it starts today tomorrow. Keep us posted Gavin!

I am too lazy to do the math too, but, in 12 dimensional space, replacing a block by a ball of the same radius should give more than a 20x increase in volume. So you are definitely on the right track there.

Spheres are also more aesthetically pleasing and safer than boxes (They have no sharp angles, for one thing. By the way, the corners of a 12-dimensional box are much sharper than those of a 3D cube.) And a spherical shell will not deform, and will be less prone to burst, if a miner tries to cram too many transactions into it.

I've looked into it. I've watched interstellar 5 times and analyses what the 5D dimension Satoshi built inside the blackhole looks like. I'm running the results through a bloom filter and then hashing it with sha512 (because we are looking at the 5th dimension and require 12 dimensions, sha 5 12 is the way to go. If you compare a box of side 1 with a sphere of diameter 1, that is true. But if you compare a sphere of radius 1 to a box of radius 1, the opposite is true. (That is why one should not compare the volume of apples to the surface of oranges...)

      [–]BiPolarBulls 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Got it... no wait LOL what ??

      [–]jstolfi 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Sorry, maybe it is not related to what toy wrote. What I meant is this. The radius of a box in n-dimensional space is one half of its longest diagonal. Think in 3 dimensions of (a) a cube inscribed in a sphere, and (b) a sphere inscribed in a cube. In both cases, as the number of dimensions increases, the volume of the space between the two figures becomes an increasing percentage of the volume of the outer figure. So, in case (a) the sphere becomes bigger and bigger, compared to a box "of the same size". In case (b) is the opposite, the box becomes bigger and bigger compared to a sphere "of the same size".

More to your point: the sphere has the largest volume (technically, n-dimensional measure) among all shapes with the same surface area (technically, (n-1)-dimensional measure), in all dimensions. But the "volume to surface ratio" is not a fixed number; for any give shape, the ratio is proportional to the object's size (radius, diameter, side, etc.).

Sometimes you see the ratios written out as pure numbers, but the author just picked an object of "unit size" -- and then the ratios come out different depending on whether he picked a box and sphere of unit radius, or a box of unit side and a sphere of unit diameter. Thus, these numbers cannot be meaningfully compared.

      [–]AussieCryptoCurrency[S] 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (3子コメント)

Great plan, one minor hitch is the sphere, it's the smallest volume to surface area thing, not the largest.

      Why stop yourself there?

If a bitcoin entry in the global ledger can be improved by transforming the shape from a block to a sphere, why not make it a hypersphere?

So now what you're doing is not just storing the solution to the bitcoin function as-is now.

No, with my solution, every block would include a four dimensional entry of every entry in the entire blockchain.

This way, if the blockchain was every corrupted, or even partially lost, it wouldn't matter.

Furthermore, new nodes wouldn't have to download the entire blockchain to be an effective member of the network. Since the "blocks" are now four dimensional objects, all they would need to do is download the latest bitcoin hypersphere and they would be good to go.
