Lmfao how is that even possible in a developed nation? I thought maybe the source might have said Albanians until I checked and saw that even they have a 97.6% literacy rate!

75% is hilariously bad, in line with educational powerhouses like Sudan and Cameroon.

It's functional illiteracy. They can read, but the would make a fool of themselves if they had to read something aloud.

And to be fair in middle school I knew a functional illiterate who ended up at one of the top 10 high schools in the country.

That's not particular surprising, when you think about it. One would have to be a lot smarter than other folks to be able to negotiate the world successfully without being able to read. It's hard enough while being literate.

The main takeaway from your anecdote, though, is probably to remember that it's not someone's own fault that they're illiterate. They have been failed, probably multiple times by multiple entities.

      For reference the "Communist" (Somewhat Social Democratic) state of Kerala in India, which is in a developing country with massive class divisions has a literacy rate of 94%.
