Yeah, I'm sorry dude. This is why I haven't bought the game. Was really wary about the always online component. I like the MP aspect but they need an offline mode if they want my money.

I'll end up getting a refund once an offline crack is released. Companies that lock single player games to internet can go burn in a ditch

Don't forget that the maximum amount of other players with you in an instance are 4. Even when you play solo there are always random 3 players in your instance and they are mostly ignoring you and do their own thing. The multiplayer experience in this game feels completely shallow.

Have been unable to play the game for the whole day. But oh well, I guess that's okay since being online is such a core feature of the game. It's not like I spend 90% of the game alone anyway.

What is worrying is : what will happen in 5 years when the servers will close ?

Most likely Steep 2 will be a thing and we will have moved on anyway

You won't care because there will be better games.

I'm still playing PS2 games, still playing Skyrim. New games being released doesn't mean old ones get worse, especially if you have any emotional value attached to them.

This might be a very bad/good comparison, but what about No Mans Sky. Of course it doesn't have true Multiplayer, but discoveries have to sync... so why can't records etc sync when you go back online in this game?

What infuriates me is that it's not a technical challenge, it's just a bs excuse to make it convenient for them to completely control the way their players can use their game. It doesn't feel like I own Steep, rather that I paid Ubi to let me play it for as long as they let me.

Fyi, you do not own steep. Techinaclly you are renting it.

Welcome to the EULA age. Even your cellphones and consoles you technically don't own

It depends on how you buy them I guess? Atleast with phones. With consoles they can just shut the whole fucking thing of but I don't think that's the case with phones. At least not Android.

Well no, as seen with the jailbreak being outlawed. I think now they changed it but back in iPhone 4 days, jailbreak was illegal

I don't really use an iPhone so I don't have any experience with it.

      that's

Nobody is stopping you from flashing Linux on your PS4 and showing a finger to Sony.

Cellphones have custom ROMs for a half a decade now. Many people created their own. With games it's a bit different. Only ultrapopular games like World Of Warcraft get freedom of custom servers developed by community.

Bs. Sony/Sony's security team is. It's not technically possible to flash anything on the PS4. Maybe in a few years it will be hacked and maybe with some more luck there will be a Linux port, but you can most likely forget about Online Play from the moment you jailbreak.

And if you do, and they find out who you are they can arrest you. As seen with the ps3 scene when jailbreak was occurring.

Let me guess - are you living in states? :)

Yeah, I do understand that man. At the end of the day look at it this way; The Division, Destiny (others; can't think of them right now) went the same direction. One good thing to note is that they build this is a long term project, it's in their interest to continue to develop the product because people will buy the old games and DLC when it's cheaper, and also if they introduce Micro-transactions then they will want their game to remain live as long as possible.

It does piss me off as well; I agree; we paid for these mountains they should be ours to do as we please; however this is the way the industry has chosen to progress (with the choice of consumers obviously). It's harsh to accept (coming from a 30's gamer here who owned every game I bought), but I Do not regret for one second buying/investing in Steep; it is excellent.

Agreed. I hate to think that I won't be able to just install this game and play it in 10 years like I can with the Amped games (on Xbox 360), which still play great, but don't look so hot anymore (and are so much smaller, etc., etc.).

That's true with all games and almost all software. You pay for a licence. Which basically is something that says you are allowed to use the software. You don't actually own it.

It might be true, doesn't make it less bullshit, or obnoxious, or downright wrong.

I've actually been playing no mans sky offline. No offline mode has kept me away from steep. I know what they're going for, but having an option to play when you dont have reliable internet or their servers go down would help a ton

I agree that requiring a connection for Steep is awful, but NMS is an entirely single player game.

It's only a matter of time until pirates create cracks and emulators to get their grubby mitts on a game DRM-free for $0. Meanwhile legitimate paying customers get punished for spending $60 by means of game-breaking DRM. In what world does it make sense that a thief gets a better product than a paying customer?

In a world where companies are out of touch with what their customers want.

My 5mbps which is shared full time with two others who constantly stream stuff and upload photos is starting to really struggle with online games these days. I used to be able to play GTAOnline with a few mates in a closed lobby, if a bit laggy, now after all the updates it just kicks me. I'm already seeing other players in Steep rubber band back and forth which worries me. Also no option for a line upgrade due to where I live.

I believe the main reason for that DRM is to prevent piracy, but I agree with you, its implementation needs some work.

Well, yeah, but in the end, it reduces the value of the game to players.

Always-online games should be cheaper (or just shouldn't exist).

The multiplayer aspect of this game is a joke in its own right. It is nothing but posting times on a scoreboard for your friends to play against. There could easily be an offline mode, an online private lobby mode where I could invite the friends I want to ride with, and the seamless mode we have now. I have been boycotting Ubisoft for the past 2 years, and have finally given in and purchsed this one game. After seeing that their policies are still absolutely anti-consumer, I will go back to not supporting anything they put their hands on.

The drm exists so they can pull the plug on this title when Steep 2 comes out. Sad really, easily one of my least favourite parts of this game.

I agree that it's stupid to not be able to play single player but I very much disagree that is a stupid lame attempt at multiplayer, I think it's a multiplayer gem I always get the warm fuzzies when I ride with randos but yes there should absolutely be a single player option for the poor souls who don't have internet or just anyone who wants to be left alone

The only reason they use DRM is because of... Piracy. Please disable it on consoles (they are piracy proof right now) and fuck the pc players haha. I hate not being able to play properly because of this stupid half assed 'multiplayer'. More like: oh its a real person instead of AI, who gives a shit? I just want to snowboard.

I have played steep every evening since its release (PS4) and ive had no issues with the servers at all. I do agree about the multiplayer tho, it feels unfinished. The game is technically online but the play is essentially single player, even when your grouped up.

I have NEVER gotten a refund for a game faster than this one.

Super excited to play this, have ridiculously slow internet, so it took 8+ hours to download.

Finally it's done... then I see... IT. The uPlay interface.

Ubisoft service is unavailable, try again later.

NOPE. I'm not playing these games (Literally) with you, Ubisoft.

DRM? Not sure what you mean there fellow gamer. This issue definitely doesn't have anything to do with piracy or punishing hypothetical thieves to the detriment of paying consumers

The only reason we can't play offline is because steep is a living, breathing immersive game that Ubi feels can only be experienced in the online multiplayer sphere. That's why they decided that if the servers are down, you really wouldn't want to play anyway. Consequently, an online connection is mandatory to play this game.

This is such crap, peddled by the Ubi marketing folk. Complete f..king nonsense. There are plenty of games out there that have MP but allow offline play. And I for one would like to play the game regardless of if there are other players around. I play it for the activities, not the other players.

Yeah what a crock. If ops comment were grounded in reality the multiplayer features would be more flushed out. You would be able to edit your microphone settings, y'know basic shit when it comes to multiplayer games. The drm model exists soley to pull the plug just in time for the next iteration

Sorry but story doesn't check out, There are only a handful of Ubi multiplayer games that have been pulled. (hint most of them are over 10 years old with multiple "next iterations" and simply dont run well with new versions of windows)

DRM is there for a few reasons:

        1) to make it more difficult for you to get the full game if you pirate

        2) keep you coming back to the Ubi sphere for updates and new games they want to sell you.

        3) product statistic tracking

By your logic The Division is getting shut down before Ghost Recon comes out early next year (both Tom Clancy open worlds) Or Unity should have been disavowed for Syndicate, or Far Cry 4 cut for Primal, or any of the previous anno for 2205, Watchdogs taken down for Watchdogs 2 ... I can go on all day.

I wouldn't have bought Steep if it didn't have multiplayer. That was the main aspect for me. I don't really care about single player games since I play most of my games with friends.

If being locked out of the game for 20-30 minutes here and there is the price I play for multiplayer then I am happy to pay it.

You should have checked if there was an offline/single player options. It's 2016. Do your due diligence when making a purchase. You have endless information available at your fingertips.

I do agree with the HUD, though. They need to clean up the icons or at least give players the tools to refine it to their liking.

The servers have been offline for a day, I can accept that, it's just annoying though.

The game is mainly single player, with a small amount of multiplayer in that you'll see others and can see their high scores, it's hardly a revolutionary multiplayer experience though.
