I was almost relieved when the contestants on Celebrity Apprentice had such an uncomfortable reaction to Alaska. It was further proof of how niche drag is, and it hasn't "Sold out" or "Gone mainstream" as other people may imply. Drag may one day go mainstream, especially with a platform like drag race. That won't be entirely negative, since once it goes completely main stream, are society's ideas of gender have progressed to an amazing point. However, for now, I think we can all enjoy drag as a unique, crazy, and wacky phenomenon that we can all find comfort in together.

Im a gay man, so I'm well within the target audience for drag queens.

but I probably never would have seen one without this show.

Thanks Drag Race for bringing drag queens into this nerdy, doesn't like bars or clubs little homosexual.

Are there any clips of this? that is really something I enjoy about the show's popularity, mainstream outlets featuring the queens and really don't knowing how to respond to them.

It would be great if we could go one solid day without a "celebrate the straight allies" thread.

I think a lot of us are just tired of seeing 20 variations of "I am a STRAIGHT, HETERO MAN, with a WIFE, and I thought Latrice was funny! Did I mention I'm a STRAIGHT MASCULINE MAN??"

[–]godiegoKimono You Didn't: Murasaki's Journey I'm Still Here

because part of the point of the show is to demonstrate to as wide an audience as possible the artform of drag.

?? says whomt ?

"Oh I hate that straight people are getting into our thing".

now don't get me wrong. i am all for anyone of any sex, religion, skin color, creed, gender, sexual attraction, whatever, to enjoy drag. however, history also shows that once straight ppl (namely Straight White People) get ahold of something it's bastardized, commodified, and a shadow of what it once was. so i'm all for people enjoying it! just......enjoying it properly.

Now I'm with you on that. Lip Sync Battle is dire, and we certainly don't need note of that.

Even if drag is going mainstream, it will always find its niche and push itself further.

[–]nivoraShangela?

to further your point; Lip Sync Battle, it is a straight rip off of the LSFYL

One thing for me is that the beauty industry (which is a fucking juggernaut atm) is HUGELY influenced by drag makeup right now and I think a lot of that has to do with how much RPDR has made drag in general more accessible. Id bet there's a huge overlap in makeup fans and women who watch drag race who didn't necessarily know much, if anything, about drag as an artform before.

Drag will never be mainstream but Drag Race is. It is watched, in part, by a passive non-LGBT audience who then take and commodify elements of it (catchphrases, mannerism, lipsync-fucking-battle) without then supporting drag as an art form. Those same people would never support local drag or even see one of the queens from the show.

They watch it, essentially, for what it is: disposable reality television telling a compelling story.

"Drag will never be mainstream"

Disclaimer : I'm all for inclusiveness and can't stand it when people talk about cultural appropriation and start a turf war about who should be enjoying drag. Just check your privilege. Now though, a few words about the commodification and Disneyfication of drag. I just think that drag got mainstream the moment queens started to sell merch or take part to WoW's Youtube shows. I agree it will probably never reach a wider audience than it already has, but it is mainstream - though a case could be made that many drag performers keep looking for that subservive margin drag has always been about.

Well, I suppose it's mainstream to a degree, but there will always be a kind of "underground" vibe to it. It's still considered taboo and something to be looked at through cynicism by a large percentage of the general population.

I just edited my previous post while you posted yours - completely agree that the margin will always be the core of this artform, and there will always be pioneers to explore new forms of drag.

Agreed. I don't mind when the mainstream enjoys what I consider boring if that puts coins in Artists hands.

They are, why do people get offended when I say I don't like this sub when it becomes a circlejerk over the Good Straights whom we should worship because they watch a TV show that we do. If you think that it's worth celebrating then you should honestly bury your head in a history book because I'm tired of sheltered young gays telling me I can't take the piss out of straight people (the people who have historically enjoyed torturing raping beating and killing us).

Torturing and killing us for millennia.

Depending on where you are on this Planet they still do.

I have a straight, male, cis friend who loves the show.

I think we should be ok with this because it shows a level of inclusion never seen before.

We don't want to be judged if we decide to watch football, so why would we do the same?

No, that's what I'm saying. It's not exclusive to anyone, both drag and football, or whatever.

It's just that "sports" are wrongly associated to straight people. Sorry if came out wrong.

This is the first time I've heard of this.

There are stupid people on every sub that say dumb shit.

Why even validate them with a post like this? You're not converting anyone. You're just increasing the visibility and reach of their crap.

[–]executive_fishNot that girl, that Woman -4 ポイント-3 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Drag Race is an exclusive cash grab for Rupaul and his clique of drag daughters. To quote Sharon Needles it has "whitewashed" drag and made it more politically correct. It's a detriment to gay culture by homogenizing (ha homo) the idea of what a drag queen should be. That being said. Straight people can fuck all the way off! Just my two pesos don't @ me

I wouldn't really call it negative for gay culture. Even many gay people (including me) wouldn't know much of anything about drag/lgbt culture without the show. It certainly made me feel a lot more secure in my queerness knowing that there were tons of people like me on television.
