Latvia is great country. We have many potato, many beautiful woman, and many very unique cultural experience. Latvian humor is very exquisite, also! For example, I offer joke:

"A man and brother are walking to buy new shoes. Man turns to brother and asks 'What kind of shoes you will get?' Brother replies, 'I will get shoes that are more expensive than the shoes that you get.' Man answers, 'But I am pay for shoes!' Brother says, 'Yes, but I am not married!'"

Ho ho ho ho ho! You see?

So, please, do not joke about Latvia. Latvia is very excellent country. I am so hungry and my dog is run away.

Isn't this the origin of Machiavelli's "The Prince?"

[–]purpleblah2 66 ポイント67 ポイント  (3子コメント)

I asked my Renaissance Italy professor if this was accurate and he said it was more like he wasn't writing a satire of politics, but writing more towards the client who was patronizing him, buttering him up by saying stuff like "of course you are the most cunning and feared ruler, Lorenzo di Medici".

The fact that this contradicts his other writings and personal beliefs is null because we've all done things we don't like for money. Of course, I probably butchered his words cuz this was like 3 years ago.

TL;DR Prince not satire

I just found that list, because I was curious if that actually happened the way you said.

The list was titled: "False, Misleading, Clickbait-y, and/or Satirical “News” Sources"

So already the list is broader than just "Fake News". But let's keep going with this, maybe they did call wikileaks "Fake News".

Wikileaks is specifically tagged as "rumor", which is defined in their label section as

Rumor Mill (tag rumor): Sources that traffic in rumors, gossip, innuendo, and unverified claims.

Yeah, unverified claims fits for a substantial portion of what wikileaks publishes. Many of those claims later go on to be verified, but wikileaks doesn't exactly filter or do the groundwork to verify their information. They just leak what they get.

As far as the list is concerned, they didn't put a "fake" tag on wikileaks, so they didn't call wikileaks fake news.

    Myth. Busted.

See, this is the issue I have with our MSM as a whole (CNN, MSNBC, ABC, FOX, etc.). Regarding the information they tell as news to the general public, I'll roughly say 60-80% is genuine, objective journalism, with the other 20-40% being subjectively based upon the audiences they wish to appeal to, this is fine. Within this 20-40% though also includes, let's say 5-10% that isn't even subjective in nature, but straight up false in order to appeal even heavier with their audience and to try to get an upper edge on their competition along with appealing to certain corporations who 'donate' to their networks.

This is where the whole idea of 'fake news' the MSM is saying, both the left and right side of political platforms, are being hypocritical and losing trust in the American people as a whole. If we can not trust our main media outlets, we go elsewhere. So Facebook, Reddit, other 'fake news' outlets to get the information we want to hear.

Politics is too big for opinion by our media and I believe this same media is a big reason to blame for what this election has amounted to. We got the person who was so resented by our political system, therefore our media tried sooooo hard to blast him with all this propaganda mixed with in with a pinch of authenticity, to the point where people saw through the bullshit and felt they would rather start fresh instead of the status quo of digging deeper into this Republican vs. Democrat bullshit. You can believe in healthcare for all, but also be pro gun. You can believe pro life while also thinking we should raise taxes. We are not this one or the other population the media is trying to spit at us. We need to evolve out of this bullshit R vs. D fight that has gone on too long and has gotten us to where we our.

Sorry for the rant, I did not mean for it to be long, but I needed to get this off my chest.

There is a distinction between inaccuracy from legitimate news sources and "fake news." Legitimate news sources make mistakes about the facts occasionally (e.g. that dumbass on CNN) and often allow their bias to influence their reporting on the facts presented to them. "Fake news," on the other hand, refers to news stories that are completely pulled out of the author's ass with no facts or sources, used to spread disinformation (e.g. Michelle Obama is a man, Ted Cruz's father killed Kennedy, Donald Trump rapes babies, etc.)

He'd get more Onions views for a funny publication (which it deserves) and further embarrass CNN.

    [–]bookdood0724 50 ポイント51 ポイント  (12子コメント)

I really don't think CNN is embarrassed. CNN reported the fact (read: fact) that Trump and Obama were briefed on an unverified dossier. That is something that actually happened. They were briefed. Calling that fake news demonstrates a misunderstanding of what fake news is. Fake news is things that didn't happen.

Buzzfeed was the organization that released the dossier, and there is room for debate on whether or not that was an justifiable action, but Buzzfeed was explicitly clear that the report was unverified. Personally I don't believe it was the right thing to do to release the dossier and let people run wild with it like that. But as stated, they were explicitly clear that they could not verify its contents, and that it could not be verified by the intelligence agencies either. That is also not fake news.

Fake news is "The Pope endorses Trump," when the Pope didn't actually endorse Trump. Reporting things that happened and accurately summarizing them is not fake news.

    This is 100% correct.

I want the point out that the dossier was written by a respected ex-MI6 officer, which certainly lends the report some credence.

    [–]ToddTheTurnip 12 ポイント13 ポイント  (6子コメント)

They were sending traffic to buzzfeed because all it took was a quick google search after their reporting to get people to actually think Trump got peed on by Russians and watches Hentai porn.

If buzzfeed was reporting from one unverified source that Obama went to Spain and had a gay sex orgy, you know CNN would never have mentioned a word.

It's just the next installment of CNN's character assassination on the pres-elect that has been going on for the past year and half.

And if you honestly think that headlines such as "The Pope Endorses Trump" had any affect whatsoever on this election I'm not really sure what to tell you.

    [–]bookdood0724 15 ポイント16 ポイント  (3子コメント)

The Hentai thing wasn't even in the actual dossier. That was something 4chan invented and tacked onto it after it was released. The pajamas thing was that as well. The only "lurid" stuff in the actual dossier was the pissing thing. CNN also reported on the dossier before Buzzfeed released it. I don't see how CNN is responsible for "directing traffic" to Buzzfeed, and news outlets can and should report on things that happened.

While "The Pope endorses Trump" as a standalone story probably had an infinitesimal impact on the election, the proliferation of fake news was a factor in eroding the public's ability to discern between reliable reporting and crap invented out of thin air but made to look legit. People also tend to read just the headlines of articles, and social media creates self-reinforcing bubbles where people only see opinions that verify what they already believe. If a fake news article headline complies with your already-held belief system, it will just be more "evidence" that you're "right".

    [–]CircularFileWorthy 20 ポイント21 ポイント  (13子コメント)

    Why is Reddit defending CNN?

This is Reddit. We hate the Mainstream Media.

    [–]JayBeeFromPawd 9 ポイント10 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Because 90 percent of the people on this site aren't capable of thinking in anything but binary terms and they hate trump more than they hate CNN -- therefore if trump shit talks CNN they'll shit talk him for it.

    [–]ramonycajones 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (6子コメント)

I'm annoyed that Trump calls anything he doesn't like "fake news". That's bad enough for an average person, but horrible for the PEOTUS. In this case it was CNN, but it could've been anyone.

Everyone hates CNN. I'm confused as to why conservatives keep watching Fox News.

    [–]VaryagStrategos 5 ポイント6 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Fox is blowing CNN and every other news station out of the water in terms of ratings, so it's a really a stretch to insinuate they're even remotely on the same level.

You don't have to like fox news that's perfectly fine, but without them our "news" would be exclusively democratic cheer leaders. This is bad for democracy.

    [–]alexslacks 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (3子コメント)

No. To be real about it. Him calling CNN seems nothing more than a ploy to divide and distort what is 'fake news'. He knows his supporters will consider CNN fake news from then on, and the other side will fight it. Then before you know it, every outlet is fake news and everything he says is true and correct.

Ah, yes, the days when 4chan trolls just pushed out gross photos and the like onto the internet. I wish that's still all they did. Nowadays their trolling gets us Trump as America's president.

I hate Donald Trump, think r/politics is a circlejerk, and, most importantly, think this is a good "crazy idea" that I saw on r/all. The whole world isn't a conspiracy. It's just that yes, MOST people hate Donald Trump.

this is what fake news is. i really don't get how some people can't wrap their mind around this. call CNN unreliable, biased, ect, but they aren't 'fake news' in this context. trump is absolutely calling them that on purpose to draw attention away from the issue because he benefited from it so much. shit, his sons and campaign managers were out there posting these totally false stories too.

Is anyone else seriously alarmed by how this guy treats news about himself? He lies to his supporters calling any negative news about him as fake (and they seem to buy it) and the people who are against him seem to be so entrenched in this "I told you so" mentality that just makes both sides too proud to have a discussion.

I'm pretty scared for the country and modern media. Sure MSM isn't the greatest, but it's always easier to say it'd be better if it was different. The grass is always greener.

Edit: this was a pretty controversial comment, I was just trying to get people to be constructive in their criticism
