I am very excited to play improvised music on the dodeka keyboard. There is something poetic about the 'democratization' of all the semitones, as opposed to the hierarchical layout of standard piano which emphasizes major chords. Like the commenter below said, I think whats great about the dodeka keyboard is that one does not need to relearn the piano, as the key layout is exactly the same, just redistribution of the key sizes.

Ok, thanks for the detailed answer!
Looking forward to the new videos! If people see that usual piano literature can still be played at least as well as on a regular piano and that the musical "concept" behind the pieces is easier to grasp with this layout this could help a lot to convince more people.

      Hi Noam,

Thank you for your comment and encouraging words. It’s very much appreciated.

Throughout the development of DODEKA, we have transformed several keyboards. The first one was created by transforming an acoustic piano. Digital pianos (or e-pianos as you said) were then used to create the following ones. As you may have seen on the pictures, our last prototype was built from a Roland FP-7 in 2009.
We selected the FP-7 keyboard because it integrated a high quality and dynamic key action, as well as an excellent sound. These are very important criteria for us, since players convey their creativity and emotions precisely though those two elements.

For the series production of our keyboard, we are currently in contact with several piano manufacturers that could either provide the instrument basis or directly integrate our layout on their keyboards. From a technical perspective, every keyboard, be it acoustic or digital, can be transformed into a DODEKA version because we use the same key spacing as conventional pianos.

To this day, we haven’t made a decision on which option to take. That is why we cannot yet provide a full description of our keyboard. Nevertheless, and like most manufacturers, we want to offer two models: one mid-range keyboard and a high-end one with greater sound effects management.

As you requested, we will upload several videos showing more difficult pieces played, as well as the advantages that DODEKA brings to music theory. So please make sure to visit our campaign regularly,

We hope we answered all your questions, :)

      Cheers,

      - The DODEKA team

Cool initiative, I am always fascinated by alternative layouts and notation approaches!

Do you already have concrete plans how the keyboards will be manufactured? Will the instrument offered to Kickstarter pledgers be a modified existing e-piano model or will it be something completely new? In the case a reworked basis is used - is already decided which piano would be used as basis for the "normal" and "premium" instruments? (If you could reveal this it might help a lot because it would give people a hint about the remaining features of the e-pianos besides the novel keyboard)
In the case it is based on an existing instrument - would you plan to buy the normal e-pianos and do the keyboard replacement by yourself for all Kickstarter instruments or did the original manufacturer agree to do a (very low volume) OEM run with the custom keyboards?

How long do the prototypes already exist? If somebody should already have acquired some technique on the instrument it would be very interesting to see
      a) a more difficult (e.g. classical) piece to be played to see how jumps, chords, runs, expression capabilities etc. translate
      b) some music theory lessons to demonstrate which concepts are much easier to grasp with the isomorphic layout

Sorry for the many questions - it is quite an investment and one year can be short if a lot has to be done :)
In any case a very interesting project!

Hi Mark K, thank you for your message. Yes, the keyboard you will receive is very similar to the one in the video, that is, a digital and polyphonic keyboard with 88 weighted keys and excellent sound. Keys will be made of high-quality plastic.

The main difference between the two keyboards is that the premium keyboard is intended to more expert players, offering additional features, such as a larger speaker, more tuning & sound effect possibilities, and a superior sound. On the other hand, more compact and with fewer features, our standard keyboard is designed for a wider range of players.

I hope this answers your question.

      Cheers,

Hello. Is the keyboard we see in the video what we will be getting? What is the difference between the standard DODEKA keyboard and the premium keyboard. What are the keys made out of? Are the keys weighted?

Can you post more videos of people playing the keyboard and the roll out keyboard, it helps in understanding the ease of use and flow it helps in the easier playing techniques with all the notes being the same length. Im really excited about the ease of learning to piano this will help me with. Great product and easy advancement of 100's of years of the traditional piano layout.

Hi Enrrique, thanks for your question. Yes, you could use our keyboard as a midi controller.

I have a question. Can this keyboard be used on a DAW software such as Ableton Live?
