Something I have been wondering about; if the Russians have be cultivating Trump for years would it not have made sense to assist him in the primaries as well? It did seem the major, and more likely, contenders got knocked out quite early in the primaries. Primaries have less oversight than a general election yet could be effected greater by hacking as insight into other candidates email or strategy could greatly change the election. It just doesn’t make sense to me to cultivate a candidate, sit back and roll the dice on the primaries hoping your guy wins, then reengage in the general election

Logically your argument makes sense. It's not clear to me that they were cultivating him for years though, I assumed Russia realized he would be more favorable/easier to influence as the race progressed and made the call to help.

But to your point, if you look back Trump didn't really need help in the primaries. He took a pretty early lead against the other candidates and held it with a few exceptions when things were in flux. Also if you look back at early press coverage (or studies of the coverage) it was largely positive or neutral on trump - they were covering him as entertainment.

I think one of the lessons for the media is you have to treat all the candidates as serious.
