Centre midfield options for the rest of the season (self.reddevils)

I think it's vital we get a midfielder this month.

We have our first 3 choices in Carrick, Herrera and Pogba.

After that, we have Fellaini and Bastian. Blind is an option but I think Mou doesn't see him as a midfielder. We also have Rooney, Mata and Mkih to play in no.10 position if we moved to a 4-2-3-1.

However, we're going to have bigger games in the next few months. Games like Middlesboro away could be massive in the context of us making top 4. I wouldn't be happy starting with Fellaini deep and Bastian hasn't played all season and I don't think he's good enough anyways, nor does Mou really want to play him.

We're essentially relying on our first 3 to start most games, which is tough on it's own but add in to the mix Carrick is 35 now and it's a big ask.

Thoughts? Even someone on loan would be great.

We'll need another player to fill in for Schneiderlin anyway. Carrick has one year left, maybe less and we don't have another recognised DM unless we move Blind or Fosu-Mensah there but as much as I like both of them, they're not good enough to take over from Carrick in that position (Blind's better at LB/CB and Mensah at CB/RB).

If Mou wants to break the bank in the summer again then maybe someone like Verratti, if not then a promising up-and-comer like Weigl or Fabinho.

I don't think we need another midfielder right away.

Whenever Carrick has needed a rest, we have played 4-2-3-1, which narrows the number of central midfielders down to two. For those positions we have Ander Herrera, Pogba, Fellaini, Fosu-Mensah and Schweinsteiger. That'll be enough for the rest of the season. Remember that Pogba is fit enough to play almost every game - at least he was this fall. He has an amazing physique.

In the summer, we're obviously going to bring in at least one central midfielder like Bakayoko, but for now I think we're fine.

And what about Pogba or Herrera having a rest?

Fatigue is a thing. We are going to get caught out if we need Herrera and Pogba to play twice a week every week to the end of the season.

They can get a rest once in a while, like it's been the case in the fall. This is not FIFA where players can't play twice a week. The top players in the top clubs are used to play more than once a week. Of course they can't do it for every week of the entire season, but it's not like they NEED to rest for 6 days after playing for 90 minutes.

Look, Schneiderlin has played a total of 11 minutes in the PL, 135 minutes in EL and 90 minutes in the domestic cup. It's not like he leaves a huge void. To be honest I would actually prefer Fosu-Mensah gets the occasional chance that Schneiderlin got in the past 6 months. He needs games anyway.

Well if Carrick can't play every game, we'll need to buy someone to replace...

the players who have been sold :D
