LOL this headline is like a timetraveler from 2100 warning people in 1950 not to get on the Titanic

Except he would only be about 40 years late...

UPDATE: Apparently someone at ZNAPS saw my video, and decided to start fucking with me. My personal email address has been subscribed to over 400 separate newsletters and mailing lists in the last 7 hours. And they're still coming. So that's cool. I really need to stop having an opinion on the internet.

How do you know it is "someone from ZNAPS"? I mean, it isn't like ZNAPS folks are the only people that could subscribe you to newsletters.

Seeing as how it started less than 24 hours after I posted the video, and it's never happened before, and it would seem like my hobby is upsetting other people on the internet with my opinions, i find it pretty unlikely that someone would put so much effort into attacking me in some way, unless it was ZNAPS. I mean, come one, these guys intentionally set out to steal millions of dollars from people who are looking to help startups get going. They're dicks.

How were they able to connect your email from the video?

They know my name from my google profile. That would be enough for a clever man.

You just realized how crappy this product is? It's not even a real kickstarter, it is an alibaba resale. There are tons of them from different companies all over alibaba for cheaper than their scam kickstarter. Some might be better than others, not sure if they are all this lame.

EDIT: in fact here ya go, someone reviews a bunch of them and shows which is the best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Euz00E3otlQ

Didn't realize this was a problem for people. Real first world problems.

For some people (Poor vision, arthritis, etc.) something like this would be really helpful. Another thing to take into account is that micro USB ports are actually fairly fragile and can break if you use the device for more than just 2 years. Hopefully the magnetic device would be more durable.

@op, you bought it retail and they shipped it? and us backers are still up shit creek?

There are some valid points, but complaining about a magnetic adapter not being flush is idiotic. There is no way any adapter can be flush with a USB socket.

The early pictures showed a device that sat far more flush that what you see in the video.

never said it should be flush. But it shouldn't stick out anywhere near as far as it does.

when you are trying to connect it you remind me of one of those infomercial people who spill their food in their laps.

Oddly enough I do tend to spill food in my lap 3 or 4 times a week....

Well one of the main points of the product is not having to line it up precisely. You can see that he's able to get it just right, but then he might as well be using a plain cable.

The fumbling is a good emulation of "plugging it in in the dark", one of the main things listed on the kickstarter.

ZNAPS are probably a scam, but don't let this crappy product make you write off magnetic adapters completely.

Search for the round magnetic power adapters; googling "wsken 2" should point you in the right direction.

They're only charging adapters, but that covers nearly all my cabling needs on my phones, tablets, ereader, and wireless headphones. And they're a joy to use. The wires hunt their plug like magic; I just need to wave my the plug near the cable and it just snaps together.

The only downside is the bit that plugs into your lightning/microusb port on your device isn't flush; it's gonna stick out a bit. So, not perfect. But I'm more than happy to suffer that for the added convenience.

To emphasis - I'm only taking about the ones have a round plug; I haven't messed with any of the others. Particularly not the form factor the ZNAPS are using.

I've no idea why you're being downvoted. When done correctly magnetic connectors are a joy to use compared to the ungainly socket hunting we do all the time. It's unfortunate that most manufacturers don't get the details right and only manage to make magnetic connectors that don't plug properly and take longer to get working than the ones they set out to replace.

Thanks, IronMew. Yeah, I was disappointed about the downvoting. I though I was providing a meaningful contribution to the discussion. I figured folks would like a pointer to a version of this particular, poorly performing product that actually works well. ZNAPS clearly demonstrated a market desire for it. And leveraged said desire into yet-another crowdfunding scam.

The circle plug works well - I assume it's because there's no wrong orientation. I know it's unreasonable, but I do wish it'd handle data as well, though. I just picked up a carplay-compatible car stereo, which requires physically plugging in my phone. Which means I can no longer use these cables with it. :(

Hmm. How do they do fast charge if they don't handle the data pins? Without the charger telling the phone it's a fast one it'll be charging at the maximum rate of bare USB, which is a rather slow 500mA. Unless the plug itself adds the proper resistors between the data pins, but then the phone might try to draw too much current from adapters that are only rated for 500mA.

I bought a similar magnetic connector like this (not ZNAPS) and I liked it. It wasn't an adapter, but a cable with a male USB on one side and the magnetic connector on the other side. It would connect to a little microUSB magnet that I could stick in my phone.

Here is why I liked it: On all of my previous phones I had problems with the microUSB wearing out due to excessive torque from the charging cables (have seen other people with the same problem too). Since these connectors are extremely weak, there is essentially no torque applied to the microUSB port though, so it prevents it from wearing out (really only a problem if you intend on keeping a phone longer than 1-2 years).

I don't know if the same wear-related problem exists with lightning connectors (I doubt it since they don't have the tounge part, that sticks into the male plug), but for my use case it was great.

ZNAPS as a kickstarter project is certainly crap though.

Lightning port tends to hold up fine. Lightning cable on the other hand...

The only reason I even kickstarted this project was because I couldn't find anything else like it, and they were offering USB C before most people were even using it. I saw the chance to use my old cables with the new standard and really like the idea.

But thanks to their shitty communication, it's just egg on my face.

They made 3 million CA$ from showing up some lackluster Alibaba product?

Amazing!

Wow, so happy I was somehow able to get a chargeback on this. I've backed a lot of kickstarters that delivered on their promises but this is the product that's made me decide to never back a tech product ever again.

Thankfully I only wasted $20 on these scamming ass hats. Totally forgot about Znaps till I read this.

$20 lesson learned and another black eye in the face of Kickstarter. KS and IGG are both dead to me.

I'm still waiting for mine to say how shitty it is but I doubt I'll get it which is shitty enough. Fuck this company.

About that pulling straight out thing. Isn't that the purpose to pull the adapter out at all? Given the size of it it would be a pain to try and pull it with your fingers. Can't judge the ease with which this (accidentally) happens, though.

If you watch closely near the end of the video, you can see the piece start to rock out of the port easily, and it just kinda falls out at the end there.

I noticed that, it was more of a commentary on your first remark about the annoying issue, where you didn't specify the ease with which it removed. It does appear to be too easy-going, though, I agree. Especially given the context that the magnet itself is not very strong and loses contact very easily...
