In the early 80's when domestic automakers were wondering how to make a high performance V8 engine work with current emissions controls, the 1982 Datsun 280ZX Turbo delivered amazing performance for the dollar. While the familial resemblance is instantly recognizable, the 280ZX Turbo was a big step forward. Nissan offered a turbocharger option starting in 1981 that raised power output from about 140 hp to 180 hp. The brakes and suspension were subsequently improved in 1982 making the last two model years of the turbo the most performance oriented of the 280ZX.
Offered for sale is an extremely rare 1982 Datsun 280ZX Turbo. This is the original car that was used as the pace car during the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix race in 1982. http://karakullake.blogspot.com/2010/08/formula-1-datsun-280zx-turbo-pace-car.html This is the same car as seen in the poster and the video.
This incredibly well preserved 280ZX Turbo has only 35,211 original miles. This car has been undercover inside a garage as is evident by the condition of the original paint and original interior. The finish looks extremely impressive given its age and the paint technology of the time, and there's no question that this car has been very well maintained and babied since it was new. This car has never seen major damage or repairs. The doors open and close properly, the hatch fits tightly without any rattles or squeaks, and the big hood with functional NACA ducts latches with a gentle push. Trim pieces are in good condition, and all bright work remains bright and shiny.
The high tech gray interior is in very good condition throughout, from the carpets, to the velour seats. The foam underneath is comfortable and firm. The gauges all work as they should. The original radio is still in place and comes with a built in cassette player. Other factory options include A/C, power windows, cruise control and glass T-tops with storage bags.
The engine is a very smooth revving and great sounding turbocharged 2.8 litre inline six that is a direct descendant from the engines that powered the famous early Z cars. Performance for the time was impressive, as only the Porsche 911 and BMW M1 were faster that year. The engine bay shows signs of regular maintenance, but is otherwise original and untouched. There are no modifications other than the "pace car" mods and everything is in place as the factory intended. The same holds true underneath where its clean and solid with no structural rust or damage. The 5 speed manual transmission shifts easily and smooth, while the all independent suspension and four wheel disc brakes operate as the factory intended. It rides on four almost new radial tires.
As of yet, collectors have had trouble seeing beyond the 240Z in terms of collect-ability, but that is about to change. Don't miss out on this car as the last two years of the turbo in particular can be terrific cars for the money especially this one of a kind original pace car.
