Is it too sentimental to start Rooney as our striker against Liverpool? (self.reddevils)

Giving Rooney the opportunity to beat Sir Bobby's record over 90 minutes, against Liverpool at Old Trafford would be a benevolent gesture and a notable sign of gratitude. If we lose, Rooney fails to score and we go on to miss the top four by three points, the decision will always be criticised. For me though, it creates an ever lasting display of loyalty and love and shows a truly honourable side to our football club.

I hope José starts him and he goes on to emphatically break the record against Liverpool.

Yep. People don't like to hear it but a large part of our 3 years of hell after Fergie was the team Fergie left.
His refusal to buy developed midfield talent in his last 4 or so years just fucked us up. Getting Scholes back pretty much made Pogba leave.

We've been called the most romantic club in the world, imo moments that contribute to that aura shouldn't be manufactured.

It's an incredibly nice thought, but the most important thing strategically is why wouldn't you start Ibra.

A top season in which he broke the record will be more important than not breaking the record in a derby. Unless he's going to score a hat trick or something (not likely)

Fair play, I respect what you've said. Strategically, certainly Zlatan should start. He is killing it. I can see where Rooney not being played consistently and then suddenly being started against Liverpool would seem manufactured. I just want it to be special and appreciated.

I'd say this is a terrible idea to define your starting 11 based on a certain player's eventual breaking of a record. Not only is this (imo) stupid, but it's also unfair to other - maybe more deserving - players.

He'll break it against Stoke, or Hull and you both will live with it and it'll be great. Or he'll be subbed in and score a first-touch screamer.

Or maybe he'll start but I hope it's not for that reason.
