The catalyst of GamerGate, which probably had a bigger part in this election than people realize.
[–]DuckDAWGCA 92 points93 points94 points  (28 children)
This is pretty true. At least on the whole PC problem with entertainment industry.
[–]Apotheosis276 83 points84 points85 points  (27 children)
Radio, movies, television, modern art, journalism were all corrupted (by Frankfurt School philosophies). Video games are now a bigger industry than any of those, so of course the cultural subversives have been attempting to conquer it.
It began with post-modern-like "art games" which became a major part of the indie game scene, which was signal boosted by their journalist friends, which was happening as early as 2008 (or even earlier). Slowly, games journalism had been becoming more corrupt, cooperating with big game companies in reviews of their games, and continuing to a boost an increasingly political indie game community. Most of the biggest indie game successes, such as Super Meat Boy and Minecraft, had nothing to do with this community, and the early successes, such as Cave Story, were made before there was a community at all, but their successes legitimized others that called themselves "indie," and with the help of cooperating journalists, a cultural subversive tumor grew.
It was only in 2014 at the start of GamerGate did the opposition to this go beyond 4chan and blogs, at around the time when people began to acknowledge the internet "SJW" insanity that was picking up, especially on Tumblr. Thanks to this movement, their influence has waned and they have become a joke.
Marxist undercurrents have yet to be truly entrenched in gaming; that's only the case for its dying journalism. But only if gamers continue protect it.
My only concern with GamerGate is that the bulk of it was driven by a desire to be completely apolitical, to the point of being nihilistic. This seems to contradict their attachment to a gamer identity -- without values, what meaning does this identity have? Slowly, through 2015 and 2016 they did develop some values, such as for free speech and creative expression and individualism, but they have a ways to go in order to solidify an identity and value system that's stable enough to not be subverted like the rest.

Disagree with the last paragraph I think video games have some of the strongest values lessons in media right now. Witcher 3 for example.
[–]Apotheosis276 13 points14 points15 points  (5 children)
True, and I do see a lot of respect for competition in competitive gaming communities. I certainly was drawn to this as an alternative to competition in real life which felt less real, in part due to leftist interference.
However, videogames have the potential to be the strongest propaganda device ever, supposing a world, letting you act in it, and see the results. A special level of vigilance will be needed.
I didn't play The Witcher 3, what lessons did it convey?
[–]Randomguy176 10 points11 points12 points  (3 children)
Witcher 3 is brilliant in that you can never just take things at face value, you may think you're doing something good and later on down the line something awful happens as a direct consequence because you didn't actually know what you were getting in to. The NPCs are written quite realistically and will constantly try to take advantage of your naivety. If you walk into a situation without knowing anything about it, you're going to question yourself constantly and wonder if you're truly doing the right thing as opposed to every other rpg having douchebag option, neutral option, saint option.
TL:DR - It wants you to question everything.
[–]tiltowaittRUS 5 points6 points7 points  (2 children)
One of the things I think makes TW3 great is that it can teach the players about themselves. This is something that I think books and movies have a very, very hard time accomplishing—in fact, I can't think of any book or movie that has accomplished this (for myself).
[–]dudeofch4os 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Really well-written war movies do it for me. Fury was the last one that really made me feel ways about things and ask "what would I do in the same situation?"
[–]CyriusBloodbaneMI 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Fury is my favorite movie of all time. I have watched it probably 30 or 40 times now.
[–]squid509 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
no good or evil all choices are some form or gray.
what seams to be the 'good' choice will have terrible consequences.
don't take what you are told at face value go find the true story on your own.
and go play it its very good
[–]JohnOliversBuckTeeth 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Is shit. Jk never played it
[–]Ein326CO 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Is shit (it isn't)
[–]ZonseCAN 23 points24 points25 points  (6 children)
The thing about games journalism is that gamers for the most part have completely written it off. Most gamers today rely on fellow gamers in order to find out whether or not anything is worth spending money on, which is a result of over-hyped games not living up to the hype, companies selling DLC before the games are even launched, games being released with crap-tons of bugs at full retail price, and an abundance of indie games that nobody wants to sink their money on without knowing whether or not it's worth it.
Nobody trusts gaming publications because it's crystal-clear that they're being paid to promote the games as good.
The only real issue I have with GamerGate is that in the eyes of history, we lost. The media has us all penned as racist, sexist assholes who harassed people when the fact is that they completely deserved it.
[–]ev00r1 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
The media also has Trump supporters pinned as racist sexist assholes. Look at all the good it did them.
[–]Apotheosis276 4 points5 points6 points  (1 child)
They deserved criticism, but not harassment, death/rape threats are retarded. Of course, to avoid having to address criticism, they equated it to harassment, overreacted to actual harassment and attributed all of it to the movement, all the while SJWs harassed any GG sympathizers.
[–]MAGA_Flocka_Flame 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
There were a few examples of false-flag attacks on many of these individuals and false claims.
(Sounds kinda familiar…)
[–]BrimshaeUSAF 1 point2 points3 points  (2 children)
in the eyes of history, we lost.
I think GG was a precursor to shitposting our way into the White House.
GG set the stage for well-deserved mistrust in the MSM.
A PR failure is to be expected when you go up against fake news peddlers.
Look at the end result, pour yourself a drink, and wait for the 20th.
[–]ZonseCAN 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
Yes, that's the only consolation. Gamers' sacrifice shall not be in vain.
[–]BrimshaeUSAF 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
I see it as a service.
It's not the first time I've done one.
[–]tiltowaittRUS 10 points11 points12 points  (0 children)
Reading your post has made me realize how much we need "internet historians"—people whose job is simply to keep track of trends and movements that occur first, or solely, online. Any such historian would also have to pay a lot of attention to 4chan; I'm only recently understanding just how much comes from over there, and yet most people seem to totally neglect the site.
[–]RedEyeRyeUSA 5 points6 points7 points  (3 children)
increasingly political indie game community
"This War of Mine" is the perfect example of a political indie game that did it right. If you've never played it I highly recommend taking advantage of Steam's two hour refund policy to give it a shot.
[–]Flussiges 1 point2 points3 points  (2 children)
Or just buy it. I recommend it. Great game. A fresh perspective on war.
[–]RedEyeRyeUSA 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
I kind of assume that is someone tries it for an hour they will not be refunding it.
On a side note, I never have seen the sense in buying sound tracks from video games but I bought the TWoM one because all of the money goes to children who are victims of war.
This War of Mine - War Child Charity DLC 100% of 11 bit's proceeds go to the War Child charity!
This War of Mine - War Child Charity DLC contains unique street art pieces made by artists from all over the world including: M-City, Gabriel "Specter" Reese, SeaCreative, Emir Cerimovic, Fauxreel and Mateusz Waluś. You’ll be able to find all of them in different places within This War of Mine, building a unique in-game gallery. The compositions represent reflections on the human condition and the state of humanity during a time of war.
100% of 11bit's proceeds from the DLC go to the charity War Child, who focus on helping children who suffer from conflicts and wars around the world. The DLC was made thanks to the aforementioned artists, graphic artists from 11 bit studios and War Child UK.
There are three tiers (including the same DLC content) for those who are willing to donate more to the cause. Thank you and please don't give up on trying to make this world a better place.
[–]Flussiges 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Ah gotcha, that's a reasonable assumption.
[–]Gloots4Sloot5USA 3 points4 points5 points  (3 children)
Is this why games like halo and COD all meet a diversity quota now? It's cringey af
[–]Apotheosis276 6 points7 points8 points  (1 child)
Yes, I should have also mentioned that the most of largest review sites would give games worse scores for doing anything that didn't cater to the SJW worldview (which could be anything) while showering praise on games like Gone Home for featuring a lesbian main character. They also used GamerGate's harassment (aka criticism) as proof of misogyny in the game industry, pressuring developers to become more PC. This is how the games journalists' politics negatively affected games, and was a big part of GG's outrage.
It also made foreign companies think that the U.S. was all a bunch of PC whiners, and some games did not get an American release because they did not want to hear criticism from PC crowds, as with the Dead or Alive Volleyball game. Some localizations were botched by politically correct localization teams that changed the content of what characters said and even left some scenes with a bunch of "..."s as in the case of Fire Emblem Fates.
[–]LuvMeTendieLuvMeTrueFIN 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
A couple of years ago I read a review from a Finnish game magazine about some game that couldn't get the favored reviews (it apparently deserved) because it depicted some violence to women.
the fuck
[–]Narwahlguy 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
That's why I love CD Projekt. They said "fuck off" to the SJWs crying about there being no minorities in The Witcher series.
[–]PutinKills 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
I can't even play the Assassin's Creed franchise now that it's all PC
[–]Trump_The_TriumphantOR 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Okay, now it makes sense, indie games were originally propped up by compromised journalists and that's how they inorganically caught on. I've always seen most indie devs as people who couldn't hack it in the feal industry.
