Tax season with my ex (self.MGTOW)

This is my first tax season without my ex and my son, (only my second overall). Last year I lived with my ex and our son and worked and provided over half the year, before breaking up and eventually moving out. Being the primary provider for over half of the time is pretty much the criteria you have to meet in order to be able to claim your child during tax season. (Last year I claimed him with no problem. But this year, my ex is Telling me that she will report me for fraud if I claim my son in my taxes. When I was living with my ex, I wasn't on our apartment lease or anything, I was just paying cash, and I imagine she will try to use this against me. She's always been financially abusive but this is ridiculous. What the fuck do I do

Don't claim the kid, but (verbally - untraceable) tell her you did, so that she falsely reports you. Later on you can use her false report as evidence of her poor character.

You should get the claiming on the custody agreement. Mine with my ex is in writing to avoid all this shit.

Did your decree cover who could claim the dependent?

It is important that you file your return as quickly as possible. The e-file system is scheduled to open on 01/23. The e-file system will only accept a social security number once unless the return has been flagged as a dependent return. If your spouse files using your son as a dependent, even when you are entitled to the dependent, you will need to paper file your return. The difference between an e-filed return and a paper filed return is 18 to 32 days to receive a refund.

I would not get too worried about your ex threatening to turn you in for fraud. The IRS deals with this issue all the time. They would much rather have you out working and paying taxes rather than in the jail house with free three hots and a cot.

There is no need to report anybody. If you guys both claim your son the irs will know about it in 3 seconds and send both of you guys a letter demanding proof that you are entitled to claim your son.
