Rules

These are strict rules that must be followed by all redditors at r/India. Repeat violators will be banned from r/India. Posts that do not follow these rules will be removed.

General Submission Guidelines

  • Porn: Strictly no pornographic or sexual content link posts. /r/india is not an nsfw reddit and repeat violations of pornography link posting will result in a permanent ban.

  • URL Shorteners: Do not submit/use URL shorteners. Posts/comments using URL shorteners will be deleted without warning.

  • NSFW: Tagging NSFW posts/comments is a must.

  • Witch Hunting: Please avoid posting about specific users or events inside the r/india community. They will be removed. No Witch Hunting in any form. Vote brigading is an extension of witch-hunting, please avoid linking to specific user comments or deleted links in your posts.

    • Any derogatory reference to a user or his/her comment in a thread in which he/she is not participating is considered witch-hunting. This includes taunts asking why a user is not present.
  • Reposts: Threads linking to the same news from different sources submitted within a certain time window (depending on the popularity of the news) will be treated as reposts. These reposts would be deleted and the posters would be directed to the oldest thread on the topic. Furthermore, reactions to news stories should go as comments in the thread discussing that story, not in a new thread.

  • Self-posts: Self posts that are designed specifically to bypass /r/India rules may be removed at moderator discretion. Additionally, self-posts should have some context added by the OP to substantiate his/her stand.

  • Old Articles: Articles/Tweets/news older than one month should have '[Old]' or '[<date>]' in the title.

  • Meta-discussions: Discussions that help move the community forward in terms of participation will be allowed on a case by case basis. The mods will factor in criteria like relevance of the post, and the potential constructive discussions it could lead to. Thread removals/approvals are solely subject to mod discretion. Threads attacking mods, post removals/approvals, other users or their actions are subject to instant removal. Discussions about single decisions or multiple related decisions are best resolved by mod mail. It is impossible to predict all the scenarios that arise and such decisions will be subjective but we promise our best effort at balancing what gets discussed vs what get removed.

Comment Moderation in Political & Religious Threads

  • New screen names will face reasonable restrictions on comments. These restrictions are based on multiple factors and will be revisited from time to time. In the meanwhile, we encourage you to participate on other threads.

  • Low-effort comments that don't contribute to the discussion will be removed.

  • Slurs and invectives - we need to participate in discussions without resorting to juvenile name calling.

  • Flaming the forum, that is, asking “where are the people of X party or Y group now” adds nothing constructive to the discussion and will be removed.

  • Serious, on topic, high effort conversation. This means most jokes, memes, non-contributive comments will be removed.

  • Political humour posts are exempt from these rules.

Low Effort Political/Policy/Religious Posts (Especially Twitter)

  • Link submissions that refer personal and verified Twitter accounts can only be made if the OP substantiates his views in a self-post (accounts like @narendramodi and @ArvindKejrwal are personal accounts and therefore not allowed for direct submissions; @PMOIndia is allowed).

  • Direct submission to non-personal and unverified Twitter accounts for political and policy posts is also not allowed.

  • Similarly, if you wish to cite an unverified Twitter account for a political/policy/religious post, you need to do so in a self-post (after hiding personal information from said tweet) and substantiate what you wish to discuss in the thread.

  • Similar rule applies for image submissions for political/policy/religious posts. OP must cite the source for the image and accompany the image submission with a statement regarding the topic he/she wishes to discuss.

  • Additionally, political videos can only be submitted if they are from a trustworthy source (random channels on youtube don't count).

Unverified Posts

  • Info-graphics, images, self posts and other similar content which makes (an) assertion(s) but lacks (a) source(s) will be removed. The original submitter [OP] should post the source (if it is not cited in the submission itself) as soon as possible. If the OP receives a message from a moderator stating that their post has been delisted [removed] due to lack of source, they may still provide the source and the the submission will be relisted [unremoved].

  • Submissions from known hate-monger websites will be removed.

Relevance of Content

  • All link submission on r/india must be directly about India and Indians. Additionally, the submission must be able to show its relevance without the title.

  • In an event you would want to hold a discussion on a topic that is not about India, you can do so via a self-post. You may link all the articles you want, but you must explicitly outline how the topic concerns India and/or Indians.

  • Though in its current content state this is a news and politics heavy subreddit, r/india welcomes posts on all other topics as well. However, posts about Hinduism, Islam or any other religion belong to their specific sub-reddits, not on r/india.

Editorialized Titles

  • The submission title of your post must be either the entire original title and/or the subtitle of the article verbatim. Any additions/removals to the titles will subject the post to removal.

  • If you wish to highlight a particular opinion from the article, leave it in the comments. Similarly, if you wish to add your own opinion on the article, please do so in the comments section.

  • Avoid using the 'Suggest-Title' feature on the submit page, and instead copy-paste the title from the article directly. If the title of the article changes after submission, the mods will flair it appropriately without removing your submission.

  • The editorialization rule includes content from twitter. If you must share a tweet, then copy paste the entire tweet text as the title of the submission. You may not add your opinion on top of someone else personal opinion as the title of your post. Keep your personal opinion for the comments section. If a tweet links to an article, post a link to the article and not the tweet.

  • Entertainment videos are allowed to have edited titles but they should fall within the other rules of the sub.

  • You may add the name of the author and the name of the town the news is about in your title.

Post Flairs

  • Since /r/india generates a lot of activity, the moderators introduced submission flairs and filters to enable ease of experience for users.

  • These flairs include (but are not limited to): Political, Non-Political, AskIndia, Reddiquette, Science & Technology, Policy & Economy, Finance & Business, Entertainment, Sports, Food and AMA. Explanations of each flairs are:

    • Political includes any post about politics in India, no exceptions. This could be a self or a link post.
    • Non-political includes any post that you do not feel is political in nature.
    • Reddiquette enforced posts will see heightened moderator activity and all low effort comments (jokes, slurs, flame bait, puns, ASCII and emoji spam, copy-pasta etc) will be removed without notice
    • AskIndia flairs are for questions you want to ask the general /r/india community that is not meta or trolling in nature. This is broad and can include relationship advise, technical advice, career advice and educational advice.
    • Science & Technology flairs are for non-political posts with an explicit science or tech bent to them.
    • Policy & Economy is a flair introduced for submissions that may be political in nature but focus more on the policy and/or economy aspect of the issue at hand. For example, an analysis of the 2015 Union Budget would fit under Policy & Economy, though it is presented by a political party.
    • Finance & Business is a flair for submissions that are explicitly finance and/or business oriented. For example, this would include recent M&A activity involving Indian or Indian-owned companies. Essentially this flair would involve whatever you find in the "Business" section of a newspaper.
    • Entertainment is a non-political only flair that can include Indian commercials, excerpts and trailers from TV shows, movies and other pop culture, and comics. Piracy is discouraged. Political videos and cartoons must continue to follow the "self-submission with statements made by OP".
    • Sports and food are self explanatory flairs: you can post news about sports or have discussions about sports, and you can submit recipes or images of food that you have cooked.
    • AMA flair is reserved for OP's who verify their claims with the mod team. Otherwise they will be rewarded with the "Unverified" flair.
  • Submitters must tag their submission with any of the aforementioned categories. To tag your submission, please click the flair button below your submission after clicking submit. Please note that [R] tags will be still be applied by Automoderator and that submissions using the [R] tag should NOT be flaired by the submitter.

  • For topics that cover multiple domains (sports and politics, or technology and policy), it is recommended users choose the best-fitting flair for the topic at hand.

  • But if a user is found to be consistently not tagging their posts properly despite warnings then these posts will be removed from the pages of r/india till they are flaired. It is up to the submitter to make sure that their posts comply to the rules of /r/india.

  • The mods reserve the right to decide whether the tag is correctly applied. Users are requested to report untagged posts.

  • List of Mobile Flairs are as follows :

    • AskIndia: [Ask], [AS], [Askindia],[Help]
    • Sports: [SP]
    • Technology: [TECH],[TE]
    • Food: [FO], [Food]
    • Non-Political: [NP], [Non-Political]
    • Politics: [P], [Politics]

TIL

  • All TIL submissions should be verifiable via a direct link which supports the claim. Images are not valid references. Videos are fine, but they must come from reputable sources of information.

  • No personal opinions, anecdotes or subjective statements. No news articles or recent sources. Nothing related to recent politics and no inflammatory submissions relating to religion/race/gender. No misleading claims that omit essential information and change the context of the link. No trivial or obvious facts.

  • Rephrase your post title if the following are not met:

    • Titles must begin with "TIL ..."
    • Make them descriptive, concise and specific (e.g. not "TIL something interesting about Shivaji").
    • Titles must be able to stand on their own without requiring readers to click on a link.
    • "TIL about ...", "TIL how to ..." and other broadly worded posts may not qualify.
  • Most importantly, all TILs must have a direct connection with India and Indians. If the connection is indirect then users are requested to post the TIL as a self post and explain the connection in the body copy.

Submission Language

  • Submissions in any form [Link/Image/Meme/Self Post containing Link] should be in English. If a non English submission has to be made, the OP must provide the full translation [Not gist] in a comment form or in the body of the self post. Do note that the submission title should still only be in the English language for such content.

  • Political videos/speeches/news/interviews not in English should be accompanied by a sufficient gist mandatorily. The OP would be given couple of hours to provide the said gist. If not, the post will be removed. This does not apply to Songs or Entertainment Videos. Mod Discretion would be used on some exclusive non English content that is not available in any other language.

  • You are free to comment in any language. However, please use this and try to provide translation to your comments if they are in a language other than English.

Personal Information

  • Absolutely no posting of unsolicited personal information. Do not, under any circumstances, post information of a personal nature (including but not limited to - identifying yourself or someone else by their real names, real address, personal email id, phone number, public or private facebook links to photographs, events, conversations of private citizens). This includes links to public Facebook pages and screenshots of Facebook pages with the names still legible.

  • Some celebrity profiles might be allowed but don't post anything inviting harassment, don't harass, and don't cheer on or vote up obvious vigilantism. Any removal is entirely up to the moderator's discretion based on context.

  • Like it or not, the internet can be a scary place full of people we don't know personally and whose intentions we have no way to verify. Our reddit usernames ensure our anonymity on this forum. Let's extend that privilege to others as well.

  • You should know that this is a reddit wide ban and a zero-tolerance issue. Any user found to be in violation of this rule will be immediately banned from r/india and reported to the site admins.

  • As an extension of the rules related to personal information, no facebook links are allowed on r/India. If you want to post something from facebook, take a screenshot, blank out the personal information (profile pictures, names) and then rehost on imgur. Any links that do not fall under this guideline will be removed.

  • Extension to Twitter: Users may link to tweets only from verified accounts. Verified accounts are those with a blue tick next to the tweeters name (on their profile page). For all other tweets, please take a screenshot and censor the tweeter's name. We don't want to be responsible for a tweeter being targeted if a controversial tweet goes viral. The only exception to this rule are unverified handles used by some mainstream media organizations (example: @the_hindu, @FirstpostTech etc). Small or unheard-of media organization are not exempted.

  • Linkedin content is not allowed because of privacy concerns as they could expose the identity of people clicking those links.

Self-promotion

  • r/india, like the rest of reddit, frowns upon self promotional links.

  • Reddit is not a platform for unsolicited promotion and you may not use it to get page views on your blogs and websites or to sell products.

  • If you're a new user, and you link to your own blog, the post will be deleted.

  • However, if you're a regular contributor, occasional links to your blog or website will be tolerated. Most of the site has an unofficial 1:10 ratio. For every ten posts you make, one may be a self promotion. This is inherently subjective, of course, and we will leave a message when we delete self-promoting posts.

IAMA

  • r/india welcomes IAMA submissions.

  • Non verified IAMAs will be accompanied by a mod comment alerting the community about the lack of verification.

  • Once the OP has provided significant proof, this statement shall be withdrawn with a 'confirmed' or similar comment.

  • Please message the mods if you wish to verify your IAMA. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Moderator Help

  • Occasionally submissions are caught in the spam filter. If a post does not appear, message the moderators so we can rescue it from the spam filter.

Banning & Content Removal

  • Users who repeatedly abuse the /r/India rules will be banned. Repeat offenders lose their right to appeal a ban. Ban evasion will lead to admin punishments.

  • Novelty accounts and accounts made solely for the purpose of mocking other active users will be banned.

  • Mods reserve the right to remove content or restrict user's posting privileges as necessary if it is deemed detrimental to the subreddit or to the experience of others.
