Why would anyone expect logical debate from a subreddit like that?

What a shithole. It's such a perfectly sensible thing to say.

You know, most legal systems based on the English legal system do recognise a right to feeling safe; they have laws against both "battery") (being deliberately physically injured by someone), and "assault" (being threatened with physical violence).

I'm not sure why your opinion warrants the ban hammer, though.

Honestly, society SHOULD strive for everyone to feel safe. Living in the world while constantly being fearful is not good, and also, A world where everyone is safe is basically a utopia and we should try to tech that.

Is that where we are currently? No. Not by a looong shot. But to completely dismiss the idea is not great either

No, just like the quoted guy says, that isn't an achievable goal. You can't set the goalposts based on how people feel because some people feel different ways about different things. It's up to the government to provide a place free from crime where our rights are protected and it's up to you to take the actions necessary to feel safe within those confines.

Sure it would be nice if everyone felt safe but that's far too subjective of a thing to allow it to define parameters and set laws. An example would be gun control. I feel safer around people legally carrying but some people do not. Who do we let "win"? Do we trump the rights of people like myself to own and carry so Sally Soccermom feels safer? No, we define things through logical parameters like statistics and leave feelings entirely out of it because "how you feel" has no place in a logical society.

I agree, this is such an odd thread. Not everything is about rights, building a society where people feel safe is obviously beneficial. Wouldn't ban over opposing it, but does seem like a very strange thing to be against? Why would you want people to not feel safe?

'feelings' is a very subjective emotional thing its not logical, you're often dealing with emotional people not mathematical people. You will be listening to all kinds of men or women, some women who are up and down, men who have gone though trauma, irrational people....some people will never "feel" safe but you can make things safe by putting protection in place, have a secure system. For example a young woman might feel safe living in Louisiana 2004 because you bought her a big pink bed with a fluffy pillow, however the 'facts' were the levee would break soon and an entire city almost wiped out by the Hurricane force winds and floods...this is where people have confused the feelings of safety with the facts of safety. Feeling safe is not the same as being safe.

Being safe is most definitely more important than feeling safe, but these things are not mutually exclusive. You can feel and be safe, that is what society should aspire to.
