This book has been linked to several cases of child abuse and the deaths of no less than 3 children. I am the mama of 6 beautiful children - some homegrown, some who came to us from other countries - each of them precious. I firmly believe that each child comes to you a full person. It is my job as a mama to encourage their strong points and give them tools to help them overcome their weaker qualities. It is never, ever my job to decide who they are, to break their spirits or to teach them cruelty in their own homes. My kids range in age from 14-2 and each of them is a blessing. Each of them is different. Each of them needs something different from us regarding discipline. Love your kids. Get to know them. If you are a believer, ask God for guidance. And DON'T BUY THIS BOOK.

Some excerpts: On p.65 co-author Debi Pearl whips the bare leg of a 15 month old she is babysitting, 10 separate times, for not playing with something she tells him to play with.

After about ten acts of stubborn defiance, followed by ten switchings, he surrendered his will to one higher than himself. In rolling the wheel, he did what every accountable human being must do-he humbled himself before the "highest" and admitted that his interests are not paramount. After one begrudged roll, my wife turned to other chores

On p.59 they recommend spanking a 3 year old until he is "totally broken."

She then administers about ten slow, patient licks on his bare legs. He cries in pain. If he continues to show defiance by jerking around and defending himself, or by expressing anger, then she will wait a moment and again lecture him and again spank him. When it is obvious he is totally broken, she will hand him the rag and very calmly say, "Johnny, clean up your mess.

In all fairness to the authors of this book there is some very good parenting tips and it. However, I just can't see myself taking a switch to a child that was under a year old in order to make them obey me. Neither could I spank a child to the point of them being broken. Whether that is by there will or they're being it just doesn't seem right to me. I have seen corporal punishment I have used Corporal punishment and it doesn't seem to work. The truth is it only seems to make the childmore angry and disobedient. I understand that this works for some children but it does not work for mine. Keeping open communication and loving and guiding them as their own individual identities unravel seems to be the true key through love and patience. I can appreciate what the authors are trying to say and our generations today do seem to be more entitled and rebellious. However, that is a parenting flaw not a child's flaw. Discipline is needed for even an adult but not with the switch or a wooden spoon.

Should be the name of this book. The deaths of three (at least)children hang over their heads. Shame on anyone who reads this book or contributes to this ministry of sadists in any way.

I am surprised you are still selling this book although you have been asked not to. This book (that I found used as I won't give money to the writers ) is despicable, sadistic and please ,if you have it use it to feed a fire. You are better of reading something like Peaceful Parenting which truly is about parenting as it should be, lovingly, wisely, connecting with them. Shame on Amazon for selling this piece of manure. This guys are absolutely CRAZY. The Pearls recommend whipping infants only a few months old on their bare skin. They describe whipping their own 4 month old daughter (p.9). They recommend whipping the bare skin of “every child” (p.2) for “Christians and non-Christians” (p.5) and for “every transgression” (p.1). Parents who don’t whip their babies into complete submission are portrayed as indifferent, lazy, careless and neglectful (p.19) and are “creating a Nazi” (p.45). - See more at: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/lovejoyfeminism/2013/04/some-quotes-from-michael-pearl.html#sthash.xiCddWcj.dpuf

A travesty of child abuse is the sum total of the strategies recommended in this book. If you want a healthy child don't go near this book!

This is not a very good book. Very amateurish; obviously written by someone without education in psychology or child development. I wouldn't raise a child under these guidelines.

I read this book and all I can say is that the people who wrote this are not teaching children to "obey". Physical punishment never teaches a child to "obey." My dad tried that with us. I can tell you that he used belts, switches (which left bloody marks on my legs) a two-by-four piece of wood, an eighteen inch long piece of rubber hose and other miscellaneous objects, to "discipline" me and my brother. He left blood blister welts on me with that rubber hose. Do you know why? Because I got a lower grade than a "C" in math class. All he accomplished was for me to fear him and to hate him. I hate him with a passion for what he did to me. Maybe he thought that his way was the only way to discipline, I don't know. He should have been locked up in jail, but as a kid who was too scared to say anything, and with a mother who cared more about her own life style and well being than to woman-up and report him, I didn't have much choice. I am off topic, sorry. This book is NOT how you should "train up a child." You train up a child with love and patience and if they need disciplined, there are other ways to accomplish that other than "switching" them as the authors suggest. Kids who are raised with such "discipline" grow up with extreme rage and hatred toward the parent(s) that subjected them to such abuse. They are never "normal" again.
